Rural Cottage, village Location

Updated: 19-Oct-2016
Cottage in Grosmont, Nr. Whitby, North Yorkshire Moors, England - Peaceful Location Minutes Walk From The Village Centre

Grosmont is a settlement within the Esk Valley where the River Mur combines with the Esk to flow down the valley to Whitby. In Victorian times Grosmont had both an Ironworks and a Brickworks (7 Office Row was built using local bricks). Hence the building of the railway to bring in iron ore and other raw materials and to take out finished products. The works closed in the 1920’s but the railway infrastructure remained.

7 Office Row is a lovely terraced cottage in the heart of the village of Grosmont, situated minutes walk from the home of the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway. Grosmont is the northern terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (although there are now through trains to Whitby throughout the season). It houses the Motive Power depot of this Heritage Railway where you can see the steam and diesel locomotives that operate on a daily basis throughout the season from March to October. It also operates on a limited basis from November to March with special events such as the Santa train at Christmas.

NYMR operates a Pullman Service during the summer months on Friday, Saturday and Sunday but also over Christmas and New Year. This is usually on the Grosmont to Pickering line, or vice-versa, but also occasionally from Whitby to Battersby along the Esk Valley line.

In the village you will find the Grosmont Cooperative Society Ltd, one of the oldest in the country. It stocks a good supply of basic essentials, fresh breads, frozen food, wines and newspapers. There is also a post office within the store.

The Station Tavern serves cask ales and food on a daily basis.

There is also an Art Gallery and Tea Rooms which open throughout the season.

Surrounded by country walks this delightful cottage is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding villages including Goathland 'Heartbeat country'. The cottage is in easy reach of the Heritage Coast with the stunning towns of Whitby, Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay and Sandsend.

Grosmont is about 8 miles inland from Whitby and is known as the capital of the Heritage Coastline. Until recently, it has been a busy working port bringing in timber from Scandinavia. The ships had to pass through the famous swing bridge (opened of course!) to dock inside the inner harbour. Captain Cook built the Endeavour in Whitby before embarking on his journey to Australia.

cute little cottage

  • 3 of 5

Fabulous quiet location just a couple of minutes from Grosmont station. Enjoyed watching the steam trains and exploring the engine sheds. The cottage is located in a great place for exploring. In one day we did Staithes, Robin hoods bay and whitby. The cottage has been updated. The bathroom is new, the bedrooms decorated and the front garden is a lovely place to sit out in. If you are looking for every mod con and modern decor this isn't for you. If you want a clean, quaint, fantastic location this is worth considering. The pub in the village was taken over in Aug 15, has been done up and serves tasty home made good that we all polished off! Added bonus its only two mins from the cottage.......a couple of notes, don't forget your own towels. Once you get used to making /operating the coal fire for the water and heating its easy! Enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others. It could do with a washing machine if staying longer than a couple of days. Having WiFi pleased the kids

Charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely break staying in this charming former miners cottage. The cottage provided all we required and the location is perfect for exploring the Yorkshire coast or the spectacular North Yorkshire moors.

There is also the added bonus of the North Yorkshire steam railway, which is a Mecca for anyone interested in Steam.

Also good local pubs and some very good restaurants in Whitby.
