Overview

About the property

The village has a lake which is the location for many social activities in summer

Our property is a traditional French house in a traditional French village in cider & Calvados country. It has 3 good sized double bedrooms, one with twin beds & a large kitchen/diner with dishwasher, washing machine, oven & microwave. One bedroom is downstairs & incorporates a sitting area with DVD player, books & games. The lounge is upstairs to take advantage of the access to the west-facing decking area. This is the only outside space as the garden at the back belongs to a neighbour. There’s a shower room with toilet & washbasin & a separate toilet accessed from the lounge. There is no broadband connection but free wifi is available at the bar in the village & the property has UK freesat TV. Please note that the property has an unguarded staircase & may not be suitable for very young children. The lack of a garden also makes it unsuitable for dogs. No smoking is allowed in the house. Saint-Fraimbault is a renowned Village Fleuri & holds a fete every summer in celebration. There is a lake 5 minutes from the property which is very lively in season with pedaloes, mini-golf & a bar. The village has a bar, a boulangerie, a mini-market & post office & a hairdresser, all within minutes of the property. There are more facilities in Passais which is just a few miles away. Passais also has an equestrian centre, providing pony trekking etc. In nearby Torchamp there’s a kayaking centre. Golf (9 holes) is available in Bagnoles de l’Orne, a lovely spa town about 30 minutes from Saint-Fraimbault. Bagnoles de l’Orne has a race course & an open air pool. There are plenty of other easily accessible attractions, details of which are available at the property. Getting there: There are lots of alternative routes but you will need a car as there is no public transport to Saint-Fraimbault. The ferry ports at Saint Malo & Caen are less than 2 hours away & Cherbourg & Le Havre are less than 3 hours away. Dieppe is about 3 hours away. (A discount code is available if you use Brittany Ferries.) There are flights from the UK to Rennes, Caen & Dinard. The nearest railway station is Flers & the station at Argentan is only an hour from Paris. These 2 towns do not have car rental facilities.

Pretty village setting

  • 3 of 5

The village of Saint Fraimbault is very pretty, with a lovely lake and pretty walks around. There are pedalos for hire, but unfortunately these were not available for our stay in June. There is a very well stocked village shop, catering for almost every need, including postcards of the village. There is an English owned pub less than a minute's walk away, but although the sign outside shows it to be a bar/restaurant - it does not serve food!

The property is well equipped, but we had problems when arriving, as we had to keep resetting the fuses after putting lights on! We worked out that the light switches at the top and bottom of the stairs seemed to be the culprits, so avoided them for the rest of our stay! There is a note from the owner regarding the problem with the electricity supplies to French rural properties, but we found that the use of the kettle, dishwasher, microwave, hob etc., presented no problems.

The veranda is a nice outside space, although it is on a level with the garden of a neighbouring property. We were lucky that no-one appeared to work in the garden, so we felt quite private.

The owner has compiled a file of instructions, etc. for the property that also includes many leaflets on the surrounding area. There is also a name for contact in the event of an emergency, however this wouldn't have been of much use as there were no contact details given!

The fact that this property has an English owner was a bonus, as there were lots of plug adapters, as many of the appliances were from the UK. The UK freesat TV was nice to have if only to catch up with UK news now and again.

A "must visit" is Bagnoles de'Lorne, about 30 minutes from the property. We were extremely lucky in visiting (by chance) whilst they were holding their 'Belle Epoque' celebration. There was singing and dancing in the main street, choirs, barbecues and artists all around the lake. It was such a lovely colourful event and one we will never forget.

Owner's Response: Bagnoles de l'Orne is definitely one of my favourite places to visit too. We were there once when a celebration of local food producers was taking place. They marched through the town, preceded by a band, wearing appropriate costumes (a bit like livery guilds I guess) which were certainly interesting! I'm sorry there was a problem with the light switches, an alternative has now been provided until work can be done. The contact details for the property managers have also been provided. There was a sheet of information about them, plus some business cards, but these seem to have disappeared. Thank you for your comments, feedback is always helpful.

Lovely traditional property

  • 4 of 5

The property was comfortable though with a couple of quirks, e.g. the power could cut out if there was too much load, but nothing to spoil the stay. Lovely location. Books and games provided - we got through a lot of Scattegories.

The owners were really helpful. Communication from HomeAway themselves was pretty poor, they really wanted me to install some app to get basic details, like how to find and access the property, instead of just sending me the information. But as I say the owners were happy to help directly.

Definitely recommended.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your feedback, I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay. As is quite common in rural France, the utility company limits the electricity supply. Very occasionally the limit can be exceeded e.g. if the water heater kicks in while there are several appliances or heaters in use. The solution is to turn something off (usually the kettle!) & press the reset button.

Lovely house in beautiful and tranquil village

  • 4 of 5

We have just returned from staying in this property in St-Fraimbault and found it was a great base for our week long holiday. I stayed there with my husband and 5 year old son. It has a large kitchen well-stocked with appliances and utensils, spacious bedrooms and a lovely terrace to sit out on, overlooking a beautiful garden.

The village itself is exceptionally pretty, and we all enjoyed walking to and around the lake, and my son loved the play area. It is a peaceful village, and was a good base for us as we went off in the car most days to explore the area (we to le Mont St Michel/Alligator Bay, Domfront, the zoo at Jurques, Mayenne - all fantastic), however it is quite quiet so may not be for someone who wants lots happening on their doorstep. The roads are easy to navigate and drive on, and we enjoy seeing different places and the area, so this was good for us and we found the property and it's location interesting and friendly.

Great property, and great owners - they answered my questions before booking very quickly and were very friendly. Thank you!
