Traditional fisherman's cottage just yards from the sea

Updated: 30-Aug-2016
3 bedroom flint cottage near the beach

This traditional flint cottage was one of the original Fisherman's Cottages in Sheringham. Having enjoyed holidays on the North Norfolk coast for some years we bought 'Rose Cottage,' having fallen in love with its quirky layout, the light, airy and peaceful feel and most importantly; its wonderful location near to the beach. It is also very conveniently located for the all the amenities that Sheringham has to offer. It is a great place to enjoy the local ice-cream parlours or our favourite; eating Fish and Chips on the beautiful beach.

About the Owner

As a family we've loved holidaying in Norfolk for many years. Sheringham is a great place with young children and there are many beautiful, safe beaches to choose from in the area as well as great days out.

Great location for a family holiday

  • 4 of 5

Location is great - 100metres from a beach which has RNLI lifeguards in summer, a cafe and public toilets. Also a 2 minute walk to Sheringham high street for ice creams, cafes, fish and chips, Sainsburys Local and Tesco, and the North Norfolk Railway. Even with a central location it's really quiet and you can hardly hear a thing.

On our holiday the kids were 4 and a half, and 2 months. The cottage suited us well with good wi-Fi and a well stocked kitchen. There was plenty of room for us all and all our stuff!

Bed linen is included, but not towels. There is a bath with a shower attachment, but no stand-up shower. Parking is in a pay and display car park 200m away - this is really convenient, so not a problem, but you do have to pay for parking. Getting a weekly permit works out cheapest (it can also be used in other car parks in North Norfolk). These can either be bought from the council offices in Cromer in person, or from the North Norfolk Council website. You need to allow at least 10 working days for your permit to arrive if you do it online, so give yourself plenty of time.

Finally, as with many old cottages, there is not much head room, so if you are tall like we are (over 5'8'') just remember to duck when you go through the doorways!!

Quirky but spacious..

  • 5 of 5

The three generations in our family all loved Rose Cottage especially the two gardens. Breakfast in the lovely back garden and sundowners in the front. The cottage is amazingly well equipped with everything you can think of, a real 'home from home'. We were also very 'lucky' with the weather and enjoyed the lovely cafes and restaurants that Sheringham has to offer.

Bigger than it looks...

  • 5 of 5

... in the photos. We were expecting that as a traditional fisherman's cottage the interior of Rose Cottage would be very compact - but it wasn't. There was plenty of space and storage everywhere. The cottage was well equipped, well decorated, clean and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to go back.

Charming, surprisingly roomy cottage!

  • 4 of 5

Four of us Sixty-somethings had a delightful week in Rose Cottage, which made a great base for a week of walks with our mid-Wilts Ramblers group which had come up to explore a bit of Norfolk. Because the owners spend a lot of time in the cottage themselves, it is more than usually 'homey' in the nicest of ways, with a very well set-up kitchen that has a gas hob and a double electric oven, a microwave, good toaster, plenty of cabinet space and a fridge of course (though without a freezer). The cottage also has comfortable beds, immaculate decoration throughout, pleasant pictures on the walls, etc. There is a separate dining room with a large table, which we found very useful and enjoyable. The hot water system is excellent: a newish 'Gloworm' that heats water efficiently on demand, so that you never run out of hot water. You also have a TV with a million channels and a DVD player. We were delighted to find that we could sit out back in the mornings to catch the morning sun for breakfast, and sit out front in the evenings to have a first drink or so in the evening sun. Parking is either free on the residential streets (Cliff Road being the most convenient); or there is a Pay & Display only a minute's walk from the cottage where the fee is merely five pounds for 24 hrs. You are also dead central, in the village.

Faults? Well, if you are elderly and unsteady, you will find the bathing arrangements awkward, for there is only a nice big bathtub with a hand-held shower, and not headroom enough for you to stand, so getting in and out of the bath may be a problem. We didn't find it so, but. . . . We felt the lack of a freezer, but we had brought a cool box; and the Sainsbury's Local on the high street sells bags of ice that will keep for 24 hrs in the veg bin of the fridge. If you are planning to cook for four or more, you may want to bring a couple of big pots and pans. Unless the owners buy a big stock pot, you will not be able to cook pasta for four, for example. And though there is a nice, medium-sized, non-stick wok, there is no really big fry pan. Perhaps this equipment will someday be supplied; but when in doubt, bring your own.

The place has real charm and a nice atmosphere. It's quiet, too, I should say. And the price was right, for us. Good luck to 'em!
