About Elaine Harrop

Hi, we are a local couple, both us having lived all our lives in the village with generations before us. A hard working family, both passionate about The Peak District and visitors enjoyment of it.

The property was handed down to us, and we would like to keep it in the family. We want visitors to come and enjoy Youlgrave and the surrounding area, whilst staying in a true home- not just one aimed at making money from tourists.

Elaine Harrop purchased this bungalow in 1949

Why Elaine Harrop chose Derbyshire Dales

The property was left to us by a family member, and as we are both born and bred from the village, we decided that the property would make a fantastic holiday rental due to its ease of access as most holiday cottages in this area are challenging to get to to say the least.

What makes this bungalow unique

level access, ideally situated for village amenities, conveniently located for local walks and cycle routes and just minutes away from stately homes including Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House. And last but not least ample parking for at least 2 cars, with lockable storage facilities for bikes, climbing gear etc upon request.

“Fabulous Property”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 10 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Such a lovely property! It felt like a real home-from-home for myself and our girls! Never mind all these converted barns and the like; here's a place which was built as a proper home and still feels that way.

Perfectly situated in a quiet cul-de-sac a few minutes walk away from the village centre, Hillsway had everything we needed. Firstly, you can park right on the drive, not take your chance on a road some distance away (I speak with some experience here!).

Enter via the very well-equipped kitchen (we used the dishwasher a few times!) & you've got separate living & dining rooms (both really nicely furnished), two good sized bedrooms & a bathroom. All the essentials for the children were there (i.e. WiFi & satellite TV!) but in reality they spent a lot of time in the lovely garden as the weather was so good.

There's some great walks straight from the property - we spent a long time exploring beautiful Bradford Dale and the walk to Over Haddon (& the excellent Lathkill Hotel) only takes half an hour. Bakewell is very close if you fancy a pudding or, much better, a trip to the Thornbridge brewery; Chatsworth House & Haddon Hall are also close by. Don't miss Arbor Low - it's a big Neolithic Stone Circle few miles to the west of Youlgreave (the stones have fallen over but the site is no less impressive for that).

In short, we loved every minute of our stay. I can guarantee that we'll be back!

A very comfortable place

  • 5 of 5

We were only able to spend one night here as we were between journeys, but this was perfect. Youlgreave is a little larger than I anticipated, and I had a bit of trouble finding Hillsway because I had no internet, but a helpful local was able to point us in the right direction. The house is clean and comfortable on a quiet road just a minute's walk from the village. The beds were comfortable and the shower very nice. Thanks, Elaine, for letting us stay even though it was just one night.

Spacious bungalow in a friendly village with lovely walks nearby

  • 4 of 5

Super bungalow with everything you need, although shower was temperamental which was a concern. We were only there for two nights so did not worry us. Bungalow was especially helpful for my mum as everything was on one level and spacious. The heating was easy to modify in each room, again helpful when everyone in the family has different requirements! We found the new owners of The Kings Head in the village to be very accommodating and evening meal was delightful. The walk down to the river is a must for able bodied folk, what a surprise the beautiful setting is! I am sure we will be back.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. Youlgrave has its own unique water supply and occasionally work has to be done to maintain pipes etc. This can sometimes affect the pressure. I'm glad it didn't inconvenience you too much. It's rarely a problem. The local family who have recently taken over the Bulls Head are really making a go of their new venture and I'm glad you enjoyed meals there and enjoyed your stay at Hillsway so much that you would consider returning.

Comfortable, relaxing and well positioned for exploring

  • 5 of 5

Hillsway Bungalow was comfortable and relaxing to stay in for four nights my heavily pregnant wife, our dog and I had everything we needed and it was great having everything on one level. The property is well positioned for exploring the local area - Bakewell and Dovedale were fantastic. The milk and card were gratefully received when we arrived, and the owner having left the heating on for us was an excellent idea, thank you.

Owner's Response: Many holiday homes in the area are situated down steep and narrow lanes with no parking. They also tend to have small rooms along with steep staircases. Not Hillsway. I'm very pleased you found the property spacious, accessible, warm and benefitted with everything being on one level. We look forward to welcoming your family again.

Homely and warm.

  • 4 of 5

Property was spotlessly clean and tidy on arrival, the heating was on and it was lovely and cosy. This bungalow is a comfortable family home, with everything you could need, with large rooms, comfy sofas and beds, plenty of hot water, new carpets throughout, and is perfectly useable for a family of 4 with a dog. Boot rack in the kitchen and a 'no shoes in house' or dogs on beds/ furniture' policy. Elaine, the owner, lives in the village and left us her phone numbers should we need to contact her (which we didn't!) and her email responses before booking were very quick. Lots of walks on the doorstep, 2 pubs, both of which serve good food (esp. The Farmyard) and a bakery. The shop is small and stock basic subdries only and there is a small bakery. A short drive from Bakewell (under 10 mins) and Chatsworth house, within easy reach of The Roaches and a great place to base yourself for a walking holiday. Thank you for letting us stay.

Owner's Response: For guests to be comfortable at Hillsway and enjoy exploring the local area is obviously very important to me. The 3rd pub in the village is luckily now back up and running and the butchers shop which closed earlier in the year has been bought and will be trading as a quality deli and cafe in the Spring. Thankyou very much for your great review, I'm so pleased you had such a lovely stay.

Good location

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable, good location for village. Disappointed to see one of the pubs & the butchers closed down in this lovely village. Very friendly local people.

Owner's Response: Clean and comfortable is what we aim for. The pub and the shop are both being taken over by local people very soon and this is proving an exciting time for the village..

Further Details:

Youlgrave is a thriving village with a local butchers/deli, grocery shop and post office. There are 3 good village pubs all serving food, a cafe and a bakery. There are lots of nearby villages also with a variety of pubs and shops. 3 long distance walks pass through Youlgrave - The Limestone Way, The Alternative Pennine Way and The White Peak Way. The River Bradford and the River Lathkil both run at the bottom of the village making from some glorious walking, hiking and sightseeing. There are numerous disused railway tracks not far from Youlgrave which are now a Mecca for cyclists. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both minutes from the village. Bakewell, voted the second best place to live in 2015, is just 4 miles away. An attractive market town with lots of independent and high street shops.
