History of The Chateau.

The castle’s tower was laid in 1155 for the Raysse family, allies of the French Aquitaine duchy which was un-patriotically siding with Eleanor and her English husband Richard the Lionheart against the French King Louis VII. The body of the Chateau was built at the end of the religious wars (about 1690).

Chateau Raysse is situated in a lush countryside of wooded hills and hidden valleys, vineyards, walnut groves and orchards, fields of maize and sunflowers, farms producing foie gras, towering chateaux and ancient villages and towns, which scatter a landscape steeped in history.

Throughout the whole Dordogne region there is an abundance of beautiful countryside and medieval towns filled with wonderful restaurants ranging from family run country ones through to top gastronomic ones, all at reasonable prices.

In The Vicinity:

Resting close to the River Dordogne and the tiny village of Cazoules, It is idyllic cycling and walking territory along dedicated paths. Our local village has a sleepy bar-restaurant and a superb, renowned boulangerie.

5 minutes by car, Souillac has lots of charming shops dotted around old streets, as well as a couple of large supermarchés on the chateau side of the town. There are dedicated shops specialising in foie gras and fine wines. The byzantine-domed abbey church of Ste Marie has exquisite carvings and a remarkable museum containing a large collection of automated dolls! It holds an International Jazz Festival in mid-July.

Famous for its Saturday morning market which spreads from the central market square into the narrow streets around. At these times Sarlat buzzes with chatter and swirls with colour. The town is famous for its medieval, Gothic and 17th century architecture and is a truly pleasant spot to wander around. But be warned it can become very busy in the summer season with its bustling cafe terraces situated in the pedestrian square by The Old Cathedral de Sarlat, a national monument of France. Some may prefer to take it easy here in the early and later parts of the year when it is more relaxed and quiet. For others an ice cream and cooling drink is best taken when the season is in full flow. There are some excellent restaurants and it also has an active and varied program of musical and theatrical events throughout the summer months.

Lascaux Caves.

The Périgord region in which the Dordogne sits is the birthplace of modern Cro-Magnon (v. Neanderthal) man. For those interested in Anthropology, History or Art History a 45 minute drive can take you near the village of Montignac. There you will discover the ancient Lascaux Caves famous for their Paleolithic cave paintings. Only discovered in 1940 it is thought that these paintings are over 17,000 years old. The images are mainly of large animals, which fossil evidence tells us lived in the area at the time. But other depictions are believed to be prehistoric star charts, correlating with the constellations of Taurus, the Pleiades and the grouping known as the Summer Triangle. In 1979, Lascaux was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list along with other prehistoric sites in the area.

Chateau Raysse is a gorgeous hideaway for Families, Friends, Reunions, Seminars, Weddings or Workgroups.

Planning your Journey.

Getting here is easy as It is close to four international airports and rail.

About Marc C

I am Steve. I grew up in Dublin but I am passionate about France, ever since holidaying there as a boy. In Dublin I studied the Arts, French & Business & I finished my studies in Paris. Together with my brother Mike I run the Chateau. We work hard throughout the year to make the Chateau as welcoming as possible, maintaining the buildings and extensive grounds and forging the relationships with people in the local community who can also provide their time and skills to make the Chateau the best it can possibly be year on year.

I love history, culture and glorious French cooking. I also love keeping active by walking with my loving 10 year old French golden retriever: "Vicomptesse du Chateau de Plaisance" AKA Molly. I swim as well as play ping-pong, tennis and love canoeing in the Dordogne.

Marc C purchased this chateau / country house in 2005

Why Marc C chose Perigord Noir

I love France & wanted to build roots there but away from the city, with it’s sapping energies, jostle & din. I live mostly between Dublin & London. I wanted to find someplace historic & grand with clean air & rich countryside; a traditional France. But it needed to be accessible by major airports, no more than 1h30m by road & also to be on France’s extensive rail network. I finished my studies with a diploma in entrepreneurial studies & with that foundation underneath, my brother proposed that the Dordogne would hit all the right notes and he proposed to come on board as a partner. The Dordogne brims over with beautiful countryside & medieval towns & villages to explore with a cornucopia of culinary delights at superb prices. When we discovered “Le Raysse” we had found the perfect match.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Chateau Raysse is simply stunning with its magnificent medieval tower & extensive grounds with 20 acres of meadows, centennial trees & wilderness, offering the chance for walking, cycling, playing & delicious alfresco meals. In the long summer afternoons shallow sunshine shards dapple secluded spots. The grand rooms of the chateau offer a relaxing, rejuvenating sleep. The 2 pools & steam room offer wonderful recreation & the nearby access to the river offers blissful canoeing & fishing opportunities. The local bakery offers delicious bread & pastries. The big snooker/ play/ conference room, large trampoline & the lounge/ library offer excellent recreational opportunities also. Chateau Raysse is a gorgeous hideaway with the chance to explore a plethora of local historic towns and villages.

Most Relaxing & Enjoyable Stay France

  • 5 of 5

We had a most relaxing & enjoyable family reunion in July 2014. We had 28 people altogether from all round the world, from Ireland, Canada England & New Zealand as well as my cousin who emigrated 24 years ago to Peru! Some of us had never met but my cousin & her Peruvian husband had never been to Europe together so we wanted something special at a great price. After a long time planning we decided on somehwere charming with nice weather, outdoorsy & with some incredible history. We found this chateau fit our budget & had everything we were looking for! We kept it simple& opted for accommodation only as self catering suited everybodys budget. But we did ordered a meal by a charming local woman. The place is informal, stylish & the Concierge obliging & dealt with occasional minor problems the occasional blown lightbulb in bathroom, gas needed replacing for cooker etc. All sorted promptly. He could not have been more attentive. He even brought us some local wine from his friend’s vineyard the day of our arrival. The chateau bedrooms had style & the 4 poster bedroom was loved by my sister, her husband with it’s view from the balcony & annex room for their child. My own room had a v large bed & nice ensuite bathroom. The other rooms were big & had double beds also. Most of the time we ate outside as weather was blissful. The adults had the run of the chateau pool, while the kids made the other pool their own. The estate was ideal for our family as we met or went off separately for the day as suited. The prehistoric caves are not to be ignored, nor is the Sarlat market or the other medieval villages like Domme. The local canoeing was serene & attractive with great scenery. This was my absolute highlight from the whole trip rowing gently down the river Dordogne with my cousin & my husband. The cooked dinner too was fab& of course getting to know some of our clan after a long time ≥tting to know the new family too. The estate has character & is decorated in the local style with some nice modern touches. Although the chateau was an upgrade over the maison. The extensive grounds gave the kids scope for adventures & there are fantastic local facilities like a water park with slides, cycling routes, & an obstacle course park which was adored by the kids, in particular. But relaxing after dinners with a glass of wine was a great end to most of the nights. Ideal for families & great value per person - we loved our time there & can't wait to go again!

Our 3 rental properties can be booked together or separately, as you wish. We have 2 large outdoor pools. The chateau has 7 bedrooms, The Maison du Parc has 8 bedrooms & the Pigeonnier has 2 bedrooms. Please ask for more detailed information. Booking of the Pigeonnier is available upon request. It is a more simple accommodation & its style, price & quality are more humble than the other 2 properties. It has its own terrace garden outside shaded by 2 large chestnut trees & it's close to one of our pools. It is part of the chateau estate, though quite private & independent. Climbing up to the first floor you find the reception room which opens into a fitted kitchen, equipped with everything needed. It has 2 bedrooms: 1 double bed, 1 twin bed & bathroom with a separate WC. There is also a small mezzanine space suitable for perhaps a child or teenager who likes to be private. Max. 5 people. It has central heating for those who prefer the quiet coziness of the Dordogne during the winter months. We have plentiful grounds for you to set up a barbecue, take in an evening meal or lounge by our pools.
