About Joan Young

Hi we are Sam and Joan, we originate from Morpeth in Northumberland, England, we have a West Highland Terrier called Lexi. She is visitor friendly and only interacts if requested. Lexi is 8 years old, and loves her leisurely jaunt down the very quiet country roads each morning and evening. We are both English but speak a little French, we are on hand for advice on Restaurants, directions etc. Sam is a Joiner by trade (recently retired) and Joan an Accountant (also recently retired).

Joan Young purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Joan Young chose Fontenay-le-Comte area

We fell in love with the property the moment we walked through the door. It's rustic charm, wooden beams and log burner were delightful when we first visited in the winter of 2013. The outside terrace looks onto a spectacular landscaped garden and steps either side lead up to a beautiful in ground pool. The pond next to the terrace with it's small fountain, goldfish and frogs is idyllic.

What makes this cottage unique

Whilst we have an oasis of peace and tranquillity, we are still only 5 mins from our nearest large supermarket. There are an abundance of country lanes to go walking or cycling on and with virtually no vehicles it is an absolute pleasure to take that exercise.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the peaceful holiday I spent in your gite. The quiet countryside and beautiful gardens ensure that I will be returning next year. Anne Harrison August 2014

Many thanks for spending the time to show us around the area, the pool is brilliant, the windmills at Mouilleron were delightful for an evening stroll and Mervant Zoo was excellent. We will definitely be returning. Geoff and Beth June 2014

You have an awesome place and I'll definitely be returning. The dip in the pool on Christmas day was an eye opener (the things you do for facebook statuses) Gary Robson Xmas 2013

Third visit to this lovely rural cottage, hosts Joan and Sam are very welcoming and helpful. Heated pool lovely to relax in at the end of a busy day sightseeing or bike riding. Lovely quiet part of France, plenty of places to visit and enjoy the local culture and food.

Magical holiday!

  • 5 of 5

From the minute we arrived at this beautiful gite, we were made to feel welcome by Sam,Joan and Lexi the Westie. The traditional cottage had a lovely and cosy to feel to it, was very well equipped and kept at a pleasant temperature even when it reached 35 degrees outside!

It was the first time we had stayed in a cottage with our 2 young girls, normally opting for a more lively holiday, but we absolutely loved the place. The girls swam nearly all day every day and we were able to relax.

We didn't venture too far (it was too hot!), but we did manage a day out at Puy du Fou (amazing medieval shows).

We will treasure special memories of our week here and hope to return one day for a darts and bingo rematch!

A wonderful week

  • 5 of 5

This gite and pool are as close to heaven that you can get. Inside the gite is so clean, comfortable and immediately inviting. I loved the beams in the sitting room and upstairs and there are so many lovely touches in the gite which gives it such a lovely country cottage feel. Outside, we found the beautiful pool area very relaxing on the hotter days when we didn't feel like going too far away from the cottage. Although Sam and Joan live next door and the terrace is in their garden, we were made to feel very welcome to use it which we found an extra special touch. Of all the gites we have stayed in I don't think we have ever had better hosts than Sam and Joan, who felt more like good friends than hosts and we will miss both them and Lexi, the little Westie, who gave us the warm welcome that only dogs know how to do. I will miss her "speaking" to us from Sam and Joan's side of the garden. The Vendee is a beautiful area and if you are looking for a lovely, relaxing holiday, you will certainly find it here. The cottage has lots of ideas for eating out and places to visit. We loved the Chateau de Terre Neuve at Fontenay Le Comte, where the French guide made a very special effort to conduct our tour in English to avoid us having to use guide books. This made our visit all the more special and enjoyable. The tour takes about 30 minutes, but there is a very well appointed gift shop with reasonable prices and very friendly staff that you will enjoy looking round, and the grounds are beautiful to walk round too. Thank you Sam and Joan for a very special week that we will never forget. Love from the Saunders family. x

wonderful in every way

  • 5 of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the gite had everything you could need or indeed want. Very clean and well cared for. The pool is a lovely attraction. I cannot fault anything about the gite at all.

The owners Sam and Joan are so full of northern friendly charm it feels like visiting friends more than landlords. We hope to return, would highly recommend except when we want to go again!

Lovely Homely Holiday

  • 5 of 5

What an absolute pleasure it was to stay in this cottage. From the minute we arrived we were welcomed by Joan and Sam, who throughout the stay, made sure we have everything we needed. The facilities at the cottage were second to none. Having a lit fire on the odd occasion the sun hid behind clouds, a barbecue twice by the pool that gave us a lovely break from the heat of the sun! The cottage facilities were brilliant offering a selection of channels, DVDs, fridge freezer, cooker, a vast amount of cutlery and a bath/shower that was prefect. We slept sound asleep as the only thing to be heard through the night was the light breeze. The area the cottage is located is absolutely stunning. We went on numerous walks and were able to easily shop within the local supermarkets. The couple have a Westie called Lexi who was just as lovely as the hosts - A real home comfit, having 2 miniature dachshunds. I will definitely returning, possibly in the winter because I didn't get a chance to try the wood burner as the weather was too good! Nevertheless a five star rating and will totally recommend it to my friends and family! Hope to see you again.

Our visit to the Vendee

  • 4 of 5

Nice Gite in a quiet location. Clean and well maintained. We found that good restaurants were a few miles away ,also supermarkets. Joan and Sam were good hosts and recommended several places to see. I would recommend the Gite to friends but I don't think it would be suitable for the infirm and small children.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are very pleased that you liked the quiet location and found the gite clean, well maintained, and would recommend it to your friends. The garden has a few steps and we understand how this may prove difficult for some older/infirm guests or very small children who like to wander. The Gite is equipped with stair gates for when small children are visiting, and they do love the pool. Thank you once again for your valued custom.
