Updated: 28-Sep-2016
Cottage in Hinton St George, Nr. Crewkerne, Somerset, England - Cottage In Stunning Rural Setting. Peaceful Location On Edge Of Charming Village With All Amenities

Rollstone Cottage, our family's second home, has recently been completely renovated, so combines modern comforts while retaining it's nineteenth century charm. It is on the edge of the village of Hinton St George, which boasts a community shop selling a wide and interesting range of local produce, fresh bread, fine wines and general groceries, a post office, an award-winning family inn, The Lord Poulett Arms, renowned for its wonderful food and real ales as well as tea rooms serving light lunches and cream teas. The village is famous for its quaint old-world charm and pretty thatched cottages, its medieval church and fine hall, but is also ideally situated for exploring this beautiful area, with its varied lanscapes, ranging from its stunning coastline, to the magnificent Blackdown Hills, the unspoilt Levels or mystic sites such as Glastonbury or Stonehenge. There are several National Trust properties such as Montacute House or Barrington Court (both filming locations for the recent BBC production Wolf Hall) within easy distance. If walking is your thing, there are ample footpaths and lanes winding through lovely tranquil countryside: a walker's paradise. You can end your stroll with a cream tea in Dorothy's Tearooms or a pint by the fire in the Lord Poulett Arms. The market town of Crewkerne, just 3 miles away has a Waitrose and a Lidl, several banks, as well as interesting shops, an antiques bazaar and more cafés, pubs and restaurants.

About the Owner

We have been living and working on the Continent for over 25 years and are slowly thinking about returning to the UK , as our three grown-up children are now based in London. We discovered the lovely village of Hinton St George quite by chance and when we were lucky enough to find Rollstone Cottage for sale, we seized the chance to settle in this beautiful unspoilt corner of South Somerset. We don't use the cottage all year round, so have decided to share it when we don't need it ourselves. You can contact us directly: http://rollstonecottage.co.uk/

We spent a lovely few days, snug and warm in this lovely cottage. The kitchen is very well equipped, so we enjoyed ourselves cooking and eating! When we did venture out, there were some good walks around the village. Amazing village shop and lovely pub.

Very cosy, comfortable cottage

  • 4 of 5

Set in a beautiful village, the cottage is a great as a base for Somerset and getting into Devon & Dorset. Well equipped and comfortable it would really come into its own in the Autumn and Winter using the log burner. That said we stayed in August in lovely sunshine and it was always a very comfortable and welcoming place to come back to.

Wonderful Cottage In A Peaceful Location

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cottage in a small village tucked away in the countryside but still close to the coast & with plenty of walking opportunities.

A nice touch welcomed us in - Fresh cut flowers & a bottle of wine. Thank you

We had a great time here, deer were spotted & owls were heard. The superfast broadband was a hit with our young lad.

The property was very clean & tidy & lots of mod cons

The lighting perhaps was a little dull - no problem this time of year though.

All in all we had a great time.

We hope we can return at some point

Many thanks Chris & Gill

Fantastic. Property in a fantastic village and location

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is is set in a village where time appears to have stood still. Such a friendly feel when you walk through a picturesque village that you only ever see in photographs but do not believe ectually exist. Visit the stunning Dorothy's tea room for a Cream Tea or hot lunch or even some lovely home decorations at reasonable costs.take a walk round many public footpaths and take in the stunning peace and quite and beautiful wildlife. Good Base to visit all areas of Somerset or even Devon or Dorset and even Wiltshire. Try to visit Ham Hill nature reserve fascinating history and views and it's free. Lyme Regis is just 30 minutes drive and Cheddar Gorge is just 65 minutes across country. We purchased a couple of Treasure Trails on line for Yeovil and Lyme Regis and made excellent fun for our children. Back to the property though, Chris and Gills cottage is so worth the money we paid and would recommend it to anybody, we have 2 children 1 at 11 and 1 at 13 and we all loved the experience and look forward to booking a property through this company next year. Well done everybody and again thank you Gill and Chris from the Pottsy's

Lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

Rollstone Cottage is a charming period dwelling in the lovely village of Hinton St George and an idea base for exploring south Somerset and Dorset. There are numerous towns, villages, stately homes (Montacute House, Lytes Cary Manor, Barrington Court...) and churches to explore in the close vicinity and the Dorset (Jurassic) Coast is less than an hour away by car. There is a 'gastro-pub' (good but pricey) in the village as well as a charming tearoom and a community shop. The village is only accessible by narrow, winding, single-track lanes and great care is needed in driving. Pros to the cottage: charming appearance; well-equipped kitchen including dishwasher and washing machine; comfortable beds; small patio area; fast Wi-Fi; on-demand hot water; parking outside the front door. Cons: a steep staircase needs to be negotiated with care; we found that the living room was not well lit; more information on things like rubbish pick-up day and recycling could be provided. All-in-all, a lovely place to stay and very reasonably priced.

Nice cottage in a lovely village

  • 4 of 5

This cottage is comfortable although the heating system isn't great at keeping the cottage warm. (We had unseasonably cool weather.) No problem in lighting and using the woodburner though.

Hinton St George is a picture postcard village with a good pub (although the food is expensive) and a tea room, which is recommended. I also recommend the Dinnington Docks pub in Dinnington, which is about a 30 minute walk away.

Peaceful cottage

This is a wonderful peaceful cottage. The TV worked 1st and we enjoyed foraging for firewood which is free and plentiful.

We were able to visit both the south and north coast.

I hope we can come again .

Location

From the Owner

Hinton St George is a far cry from the fast pace of modern life, but easy to get to and in easy reach of several lovely beaches and interesting towns. The village, could be straight out of a classic serial: pretty ochre stone, thatched cottages, a Norman Church, village shop and post office, tearooms, an award-winning pub, cricket team, pantomime, music festival and summer fête. From Rollstone Cottage, we turn left out of the front door and are two minutes walk from the shop, which sells an astoundingly large array of local produce and fine wines; another minute and we are at the pub with it's lovely food, local beers and open fires. It's a whole 5 minutes walk if we fancy a cream tea at Dorothy's Tearoom! Turn right and we are in beautiful open countryside, with wonderful walks.

Facilities

From the Owner

The cottage itself dates from at least the early 1800's and was until very recently home to workers on Earl Poulett's estate (the Hall is just down the lane). It has recently been completely renovated, though we have been careful to preserve its old-fashioned charm and were thrilled to uncover the old ingle-nook fireplace which now houses a pretty woodburning stove for cosy winter evenings; in summer we have a pretty enclosed sitting area in the courtyard behind the house,so we can dine outside and listen to the owls. We love it here, and our children often nip down from London on the train with their friends (with just a 10 minute taxi ride from Crewkerne Station). It is a perfect antedote to city life for them...and once they are here, Hinton has everything they need to relax.
