Maison de maitre in an attractive and peaceful setting

Updated: 10-Oct-2016
La Fortonie - It is ideally suited for two families.

The property is approximately 35 miles east of Bordeaux, 12 miles from St. Emilion and Bergerac and 400 miles from the channel port of Caen. It is situated 500 meters from the road, down a track.

The House

Is a maison de maitre, built around 1770 in an attractive and peaceful setting, surrounded by vineyards. It is comfortably arranged, and can accommodate any number of people, sleeping up to twelve. It is ideally suited for two families.

The grounds

The garden is surrounded by barns and an old wall. The private swimming pool is fully serviced (10m x 5m). There are tables and chairs for eating outside and a BBQ. The terrace by the pool has a separate table and chairs. The petanque (for boules) is by the house. Deck chairs and badminton are available also.

About the Owner

We purchased La Fortonie in 1989s when my parents lived nearby in Massugas. Descending on them with two small children for any length of time was quite demanding and seemed unfair, hence our decision to buy a house nearby.

We consider the Gironde to be as much our home as the UK, the children spending every holiday and half term getting to know their grandparents. As they are now grown up , we all have less time but have made many local friends over the years and still go to La Fortonie as often, and for as long as possible

From the Owner

When we bought the house it was derelict with no roof or closing windows, and the first few years were spent cohabiting with the wildlife while we made it habitable. We have tried not to over renovate as it is our home, but there are plenty of games for all, including a well stocked library for both children and adults. The kitchen has a kettle and toaster (not very French) and is well equipped. There is free wifi and internet access but we do not have a television, though there is a surround sound music system. The property stands literally in the heart of our neighbour’s vineyards completely off the beaten track. It is wonderfully quiet and secluded and yet only a couple of kilometres from our thriving village (Gensac).

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

There is a lot to explore and taste, and everyone has their own plans. For fine wine St Emilion is a must. It is twenty minutes away and a very pretty town.

The local fresh water lakes are all within about 10 miles.Castelgaillard, Blasimon, and Lac de Gurcon. All of thehave facilities for swimming, windsurfing and bucket + spading, as well as fishing.

There is plenty to see and do, depending on the time of year. The Tourist offices in all the towns and a lot of the villages are extremely efficient and have a lot of information. The one in Gensac is the nearest and is in the main square.

La Fortonie is a family house, which is enjoyed by everyone who visits. It is principally suited to family occupation, hence the games and books belonging to our children, which we hope will be used.

From the Owner

There is plenty to do, from canoeing down the Dordogne, to playing golf or horse riding. If you prefer culture, there is a full music programme throughout the summer, and the not to be missed “son et lumier” re-enactment of the 100 years’ war in nearby Castillon. Each village has a market day (with its own character), some being better than others. If a quiet holiday is what you want then the private swimming pool is for you. Not to be forgotten is wine. We are in one of the most revered appellations of the world, Bordeaux. St Emilion is 20 minutes away and an absolute must, with wonderful scenery, tempting restaurants, and of course excellent wine. Many of the chateaux offer tastings, as do the smaller local ones around La Fortonie.
