About Phil McNeelance

We purchased High Chapel in 2003 as a closed Methodist chapel and set about carefully and tastefully converting the chapel to a practical family holiday home for ourselves and our two daughters. We regularly use High Chapel ourselves and have been renting the cottage for about 4 years now.

We never tire of visiting High Chapel and use it as a tranquil resting place from our hectic lives in the Midlands.

Having said that, we love to sail and swim in the bay and regularly run the coastal path to either staithes or Sandsend as part of our regular fitness training for athletics and triathlon events!

Why Phil McNeelance chose Yorkshire Moors and Coast

We love the uniqueness of Runswick Bay with its traffic free environment surrounded by quaint cottages. The views across the Bay from the chapel are totally relaxing and the morning walk along the beach is just so refreshing.

There are fantastic walks from the chapel or a short car journey to Whitby provides ample retail therapy when required!

Runswick Bay is a quiet and peaceful location most of the year and the chapel compliments this with it own unique atmosphere.

What makes this cottage unique

High Chapel is spacious and characterful for entertaining friends or family and the availability of free WiFi ensures contact with the outside world if and when required. The fixtures and fittings are all of a high standard and the log burning stove and underfloor heating provides ample heating and atmosphere for warm and cosy evenings in.

lovely little house in a perfect spot

  • 5 of 5

The amount of inventory provided goes beyond most self catering accommodation. The old character of the converted chapel is in contrast to a modern kitchen and bathroom. We cooked a lot and were not left wanting for equipment. We plan to return.

A warm and welcoming individual cottage by the sea

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at High Chapel. It felt like a real home away from home and was very well appointed and had some lovely touches and additions that we wouldn't necessarily have expected.

The owners were excellent with communication and information and were very helpful in accomodating and providing items for our young children.

The property is stunning and individual. We know and love Runswick Bay and it was great to be back again in such a lovely and welcoming cottage.

Thank you so much for a lovely long weekend - our little break allowed us to relax so that it felt as though we were away for a lot longer.

We would thoroughly recommend a stay at High Chapel to anyone.

Wonderful house, wonderful location.

  • 5 of 5

Runswick Bay is a very special place and we spent a lovely weekend at High Chapel. The chapel has been thoughtfully converted into a really well appointed, airy, bright house. The beds were extremely comfortable and all mod cons made for a very relaxing break. We were blessed with some lovely winter sunshine and so were able to enjoy some lovely walks on the beach just a few minutes walk from the chapel. Runswick Bay is a great location from which to explore the North Yorkshire coast and moors and we will certainly be back

This is an airy yet cosy converted chapel with comfy beds and everything you need.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for the New Year and thoroughly enjoyed this space. It has been thoughtfully converted to a high spec. and once familiar with the wood burner the space can readily be warmed up to combat whatever the weather outside is doing! The shower was pleasantly powerful and the bathroom overall was clean and a lovely space. Phil was helpful from the outset and I felt was available if we had needed him.

My only request for any improvement would be a basic coffee grinder - we had some gorgeous coffee beans from Ethiopia but no way to pulverise them. We plan to come back to High Chapel.

A Unique Property In A Charming Location

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at High Chapel. A comfortable and characterful conversion with excellent facilities. Unusual to be in the centre of a village with no passing traffic - lovely and quiet at night.

Runswick Bay is a delight with a quirky layout - follow the narrow winding paths up and around the pretty cottages and enjoy the sea view.

A great base for the area of Yorkshire and beyond. We enjoyed local walks from the doorstep and also drove out to Durham, visiting Ormesby Hall on the way.

We definitely recommend High Chapel and hope to be back soon.
