About the property

2 The Granary Holiday Cottage in Brighstone, Isle of Wight, England - Peaceful Location On Edge Of Village, 10 Minutes Walk To The Beach

This Visit England four star rated character Isle of Wight holiday cottage is located on the edge of the popular village of Brighstone, with both the beach and the village centre within a 5-10 minute walk.

2 The Granary originally formed part of the 17th century Brighstone Mill. Converted in 1990, this is an upside down Isle of Wight holiday cottage. The living accommodation on the first floor has views of the surrounding countryside. The bedrooms and bathroom are on the ground floor so easy to drop off your luggage, and in the mornings you can just step out of the front door and have your breakfast in our lovely courtyard garden - a real suntrap!

The cottage has double-glazing and a modern LPG boiler central heating system and is ideal for holidays and short breaks all year round.

Guests staying 7 nights or more are welcomed with a hamper from Brighstone Village Shop containing local island produce. A typical hamper will include Isle of Wight milk, bread, butter, jam, cake, eggs, tomato ketchup, biscuits, and lemonade (items can be swapped on request). Fair trade tea, coffee and sugar is available in the cottage.

Please ask for our discounted vehicle and foot passenger ferry deals when you book.

Brighstone is on the south coast and is one of the most popular and attractive villages on the Isle of Wight. The village has two churches, pub, doctor’s surgery, newsagent, grocery shop (including Post Office and Tourist Information Point), gift shop and a hairdresser. The Brighstone Forest is 2 miles away, and there are spectacular views of the coastline from the nearby Downs.

About Teresa Tearle

My love affair with the Isle of Wight began in 2001 following in the footsteps of my boyfriend who spent happy times on the island learning to paraglide and looking for fossils. His love of the island was infectious and more visits followed together. We bought our first cottage (2 The Granary, Brighstone) in 2004 and our holiday letting adventure began! We bought our second cottage (Brookside Cottage) in 2008 and thoroughly enjoy being able to share our cottages and the island with our holiday guests.

Teresa Tearle purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Teresa Tearle chose Brighstone

2 The Granary was our first holiday home on the Isle of Wight. We fell in love with Brighstone village and were very lucky to find the cottage. We couldn't resist it's charms and can still remember peering over the fence on a beautiful sunny day, looking at the garden and thinking "we have to have this!".

What makes this cottage unique

2 The Granary's garden is a real sun-trap. The cottage's peaceful location and character keep our guests returning year after year.

This cottage is very much a home from home. Very well equipped. Lovely hamper from the local store to start us on our holiday. Lots of local information in the house to help plan visits. Lovely walk to the village centre and surrounding area. Thank you for letting us stay in your cottage!!

Warm and cosy well equipped cottage in the lovely village Brighstone.

  • 5 of 5

We arrived and found the cottage easily from information supplied, we opened the gate and went into a beautiful courtyard garden, entering the cottage we found it very clean and warm, a lovely hamper with local produce was in the kitchen, a Christmas tree and card in the lounge, lovely touches. The information folder was packed with everything we needed to know and suggested places of interest, this was the first time we have ever booked direct with an owner but I can honestly say it was a good decision and I would certainly book again, the owner Theresa is so caring she even text to make sure we got home ok. Thank you Theresa.

Owner's Response: Making our guests feel at home is very important to us. This is especially so at Christmas when we feel privileged that guests have chosen our cottage in which to spend the festive period. And of course we love to encourage people to explore our beautiful Island too!

Fantastic Isle of Wight getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic! We stayed at 2 the Granary for 5 nights and couldn't have had a better experience. The house was immaculate and we received a care package in a nice basket when we arrived. Brighstone is a beautiful village and there are plenty of walks in the area. The Isle of Wight is a delightful place to visit. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a getaway on the Island!

Cosy and convenient

  • 5 of 5

A very well appointed property, and the owner was very helpful. I was here to look for fossils, etc., and was very close to the south coast. Easy waking distance for a non-driver like myself. Would consider returning, but maybe in March when lighter, and maybe a bit warmer weather!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your great review. We love having people to stay who travel to and around the island on public transport as we have so much to explore that is readily accessible on the bus or on a bicycle. Look forward to having you stay again.

Ideal for ramblers, friends, small family, cooks

  • 4 of 5

The Granary is a cosy, warm cottage even in the worst weather, which makes it a good wintertime holiday home. The kitchen is well equipped (though one really good chef’s knife would have been appreciated); it was a pleasure to prepare meals there with the abundance of super local vegetables, meats and wines available at the excellent village shop. The owner is a great supporter of IOW producers and businesses, as evidenced by the thoughtful welcome basket, flowers, and even a local artisan’s Christmas card greeting me upon arrival—such a nice touch.

The location is good for cyclists, and walkers who like either the coast or the downs—though be sure to bring a torch because if you are out late it’s impossible to negotiate your way “home” in the pitch blackness. (On the flip side, it’s a stargazer’s paradise and I wish I’d brought my tripod for some night shots.) The private car park is a bonus, but if you’re on foot, as I was, there is a reliable bus service to Newport and Freshwater.

Why a less-than-five-star review? These are personal tastes: I was staying alone, to write, enticed mainly by the promised “views of the surrounding countryside”, which in fact the cottage lacks. Sitting to work, I had only a view of the stone wall across the road (not that stone walls in England aren’t pretty). Also, because of the cottage’s location on a sloping roadside, it is in fishbowl on both floors, which I don’t find very relaxing. It’s a quiet location but, even in December/January, there is a lot of foot and bicycle traffic. If you’re romantically inclined, be aware! Also, the beds are very squashy, which might be a consideration for some (I had to sleep on the sofa).

I think the cottage is ideal for friends who want to walk or bicycle by day and hang out together in the evenings. It is robustly but tastefully furnished, with safe windows and an enclosed garden that must be pretty in the warmer seasons, so it would also be great for a family with a couple of young children.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much for the comprehensive review and I'm so glad that our local island produce and lovely village shop are appreciated. Thanks too for the constructive comments on the cottage and we will address the "less-than-five-star review" aspects where we can (we do already provide a couple of torches!). We are always happy to help our guests so if there is anything that is particularly important to you please do ask in advance or during your stay.

Ideal located cottage

  • 4 of 5

Well equipped and very clean property, we wanted for nothing. We were extremely comfortable and warm considering the time of year we chose to be on holiday! We thought the location was perfect being so close to the village yet within easy walk of the coast and frequented both the local pub and shop whose extended opening hours were welcome after our days out and about. The food hamper was a fantastic touch especially the emphasis on local, produce. Many thanks.

There are bus services to Brighstone from Yarmouth (via Freshwater) and Ryde / Cowes (via Newport). The bus stop is directly outside / opposite Brighstone Village Shop.

Distances:

Carisbrooke Castle, Newport, Yarmouth, Freshwater, Dimbola Lodge / Freshwater Bay, Compton Bay, Colwell Bay and Totland Bay all within 10 miles.

Further afield are the IOW Steam Railway at Havenstreet, Brading Roman Villa, theme parks for the children at Robin Hill, Blackgang and the Needles at Alum Bay.

National Trust: Needles Old Battery, Newtown Old Town Hall, Mottistone Manor Garden, Bembridge Windmill

English Heritage: Osborne House, Carisbrooke Castle, Yarmouth Castle

Further Details:

The Island has many nice pubs serving local beer and good reasonably priced food. Many of these also have live entertainment. We can recommend our local, ‘The Three Bishops’. The White Mouse Inn at Chale, The Sun Inn at Hulverstone, The Waterfront restaurant in Totland, The New Inn at Shalfleet, The Crown in Shorwell are also recommended.
