A perfect getaway, with excellent hosts

  • 5 of 5

The Barn is a real home from home. It's spotlessly clean, very well furnished and Philip and Sarah, who live just across the road, could not have been more welcoming and helpful. A lot of care and attention has gone into those all important things: the beds are very comfortable, and the linen is the sort of quality you would buy yourself - none of that 'this will do, they're only renting' attitude one sometimes finds. The garden was absolutely perfect for our energetic young hound, and it really is fully escape proof. Philip's recommendations for pubs and shops were spot on - the local butcher and fishmonger in Wellington were sufficiently impressive that we cooked at home more than we might have normally done, but when we fancied going out to eat, his suggestion of the Martlet didn't disappoint. We didn't try the Holywell, because it was closed while we were there, but I'm sure that equally lives up to Philip's recommendation. We were well looked after, in an easy going way. It all felt very relaxed, and Philip and Sarah have got a great attitude to customer service. When we needed something, it was taken care of, but we were also left alone to enjoy our lovely little family break together. We'll be back.

Super property with great views, dog friendly paddock and a good base for exploring Somerset/Devon

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Barn in Payton. It is a very clean, well sized property with all the facilities one would need for 2 or 4 people staying.

Upstairs contains a big open plan kitchen, dining area, sitting room which opens out onto the shingle terrace and grass paddock. Views are across the fields up to the Wellington monument. We briefly used the heating a couple of times and that appeared to be very quick and efficient. The electric cooker is slightly old fashioned, but perfectly fine for our purposes.

Outside there is the possibility of parking in the large garage, and access to a hosepipe to clean down muddy puppies.

Downstairs contains the 2 bedrooms, one with a small ensuite and the shared bathroom. All the facilities are modern and clean. There are windows overlooking the shared driveway with the farm, but not really a view or curtains to leave open.

Philip was very helpful with our stay. Even bringing his own dog Hetty over to play with our 5 month old Cocker Spaniel puppy. We would certainly come back the next time we are in the area.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, we purchased a new oven and hob 3 months ago, but have had so many guests staying there has not been time to have them fitted. Hetty enjoyed her runaround with Missy very much. Also thank you for the wine, very kind. Look forward to seeing you all again.

Outstanding

This converted barn is a gem of a holiday home. First of all Philip came to find us as we had gotten lost by using the sat nav instead of the directions provided (Big Mistake). Then he helped carry our bags inside and gave us a potted history of the barn and the surrounding area. The barn was extremely clean and very well maintained, with lovely comfy sofas and a large dining table. The beds were very comfortable and the water always hot. Everything you could possibly want is provided, from an apron to body lotion. The view is amazing, with Wellingtons Monument clearly visible. The peace and quiet makes this an exceptional place for relaxing and recharging your batteries. The reccommendations for restaurants were spot on and we had an amazing meal at the Martlet Inn. We shall certainly be coming back.
