About the property

Cottage in Lerryn, Nr. Fowey, Cornwall, England - A Gorgeous Setting, With Fruit Trees In The Lawned Garden, And 'Secret Beaches' 20 Minutes Away

Sweet Briar cottage is a cosy hideaway, tucked into the side of the Lerryn Valley, its large garden boasting mature apple and cherry trees overlooking the tidal reaches and bubbling waters of the Lerryn river. Constructed about 150 years ago from cob and stone, it has been sympathetically restored in 2014 and now provides a warm and enveloping holiday home for our family. The cottage has 3 bedrooms and a shower room and toilet on each floor. The kitchen/diner is fitted with a bespoke hand built kitchen with all the mod cons and has views across fields and ancient woodland. The cosy living room boasts a large log burner for those wanting to curl up on a couch in front of a real fire.

Relaxing week in Lerryn.

  • 5 of 5

We've just had a great week staying at Sweet Briar Cottage in Lerryn. The cottage is a nice mix of traditional and modern, all bedrooms are a good size (2 upstairs and one down).

We thought the peaceful nature of this picturesque village was perfect, it is off the beaten track but has a shop / pub etc.

The owner, Nikki, was very helpful and the caretaker, Vicki, also got in touch during our stay to make sure everything was in order.

We all loved the garden with the views of the river and valley, and our 3 year old son played happily on the buoy swing and tree house castle for hours. I can't say I agree with the previous poster about the lack of child proofing in the garden; it is basically enclosed all round and the welcome book makes clear the tree house was built for the owners own use and is provided to guests as a courtesy.

Double check before you go with young children

  • 1 of 5

This is a good cottage with some great features but it not suitable for children 2-5 years in age.

- There are no window locks or safety measures on the windows (obvious concern with upstairs rooms)

- There is a gap under the main car gate under which a 2-5 year old can escape (onto the road).

- The tree house is great but the fence next to it is too low. A child can easily topple over it (the other side is 2-3 feet onto the road).

Being on holiday is supposed to be relaxing and the kids can play/move around the property safely but we couldn’t relax due to the above dangers.

Guide to the cottage is limited which was problematic as one night we had need to attend A&E do to a medical emergency but there was nothing in the folder on where the nearest one was.

Emergency details should be provided for guests in print form (not online for example). Guests without smartphones will struggle.

2 other points.

- The grass had not been cut for a while.

- There was no guestbook. Reviews from previous guests – little tips, local places to go (or not to go),are essential. I never been to a cottage in UK or Abroad that doesn’t have guestbook. Most guests study them intently.

Owner's Response: Dear David, Thanks very much for your review. We are obviously dissapointed that your perceptions of the cottage, but particularly the garden, was so obviously in contrast to all our other guests. Our two children (3 & 6) have loved playing in the garden for the last three years - particularly rolling down the hill, and climbing the treehouse and apple trees. We do keep an eye on our own children with regards to some of the features of the 150 year old property and country garden as you describe, although the new fence up by the treehouse will prevent all but the most concerted (and unsupervised) attempts to escape! We made a very deliberate decision to provide a free landline (incoming and outgoing) and broadband wireless to offset the lack of mobile coverage although many of our guests consider that lack of mobile connectivity an absolute bonus! We have updated the existing Guest Guide to include the A&E details, mirroring the recommendations that were already given by the NHS website and 111. We try to encourage guests to leave their suggestions on the Facebook and Twitter site (as well as posting our own recommendations) so that future guests can enjoy planning their days before they arrive at the cottage but a nice guestbook might be a good addition. Thank you. Regards, Stu and Nikki

Lovely stay

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage, renovated to a high standard, with pretty much everything you need for a comfortable stay. Lerryn is gorgeous! Lovely river walks, cute village shop (bit pricey, as expected) and proper village pub. Nothing fancy, the opposite of pretentious, but serving a decent beer (so my husband tells me) and food OK. We visited Eden, Heligan, Lanhydrock (all thoroughly enjoyable) and also rated Fowey and Polkerris beach. We hope to return to this area in the future.

A stunning cottage in beautiful surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed a fantastic week at Sweet Briar Cottage. It is a stunning cottage which has been restored to a very high standard. The cottage itself was extremely well equipped and spotlessly clean. We were really pleased with the location as the village of Lerryn was peaceful and idillyic whilst being only a short journey to some great restaurants, towns and the coast which made for plenty of great days out. Would highly recommend this property and we fully intend to stay again!

The perfect idyll

  • 5 of 5

What a delightful and restful cottage, beautifully and sympathetically restored in the land where you can throw your watch away. Lerryn feels well away from any tourist highway and close to the river with all of its walks through lush forests, yet village life still ebbs and flows through the pub, village green and store. Nicola, the owner, was really helpful from start to finish and nothing was any trouble she even tried to help us find another place close by for the second week. Quite simply we would return and have no hesitation in recommending to anyone. You will be so glad you booked it!

Stunning Cottage in perfect location

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful cottage; stylish, very clean and perfect for our family holiday. We felt very comfortable and relaxed in such excellent surroundings. Our daughter loved the garden area and our older son enjoyed tending to the log burner! Everything in the cottage was of excellent quality and the proximity to the shop and pub made life very easy for us! We highly recommend.

Location

Coast/Beach:

The riverbanks are a glance, or a 30 second walk away! Fowey, and it's stunning harbour is a 10 min drive, or a 3hr paddle.

A 15 minute drive will take you to two of Cornwalls best 'secret beaches' - guide book provided.

Talland Bay beach is a 20min drive, with its rock and tidal pools, new cafe and low tide sandy beach.

Looe, it's harbour and beach is 30 mins drive. Newquay, and northern Cornwall's beaches is 40 mins drive.

Travel:

Nearest airports are Newquay (45mins) and Exeter (1hr 20 mins). Bristol airport is 2 hrs away.

Buses do transit through the village, but the charm of Lerryn is that it's off the beaten track. For those wanting isolation and tranquility, almost everything you want is in the village and its surrounds.
