About the property

Cottage, Nr. Perigueux, Dordogne - Peaceful Location For Exploring Region

The house is situated in the quiet agricultural hamlet of Cherval. The house sits on a corner plot with a few trees, hedges and wall, making it private. The main cottage retains all the old features of the original cottage. They include the original stone fireplace, original staircase and exposed beams. The renovated adjoining bi-level barn makes a great modern summer lounge creating a free-flow between the outdoor and indoor living spaces. The private pool (9x4.5m) and garden includes loungers, garden table, chairs and a BBQ. The nearest towns are Verteillac and Ribérac with plenty of amenities, the "Venice of Périgord", Brantôme (30 mins) and Dorgdone's capital Périgueux (50 mins).

About Alan Cox

Julie and I live and work in Beijing, China as educators. With our three children and cat we enjoy the urban excitement that Beijing offers but look forward to holidays where we can slow down the pace and enjoy the beautiful tranquil countryside of the Dordogne.

Alan Cox purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Alan Cox chose Cherval

A quiet place to get away from it all, enjoy the sunshine, food and the good company of friends and family we wanted a cosy place to be our second home that our family and future families would be able to enjoy.

What makes this cottage unique

A great place for families or small family gatherings, "Petit Laurier" will be able to provide you a place to relax and unwind in the French countryside while taking time to explore all that the Dordogne has to offer.

Beautiful home in a relaxing, rural setting.

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying in the property with our friends. There were 4 adults and 5 children and the layout of the house gave us plenty of space to have time together and find a quieter spot if needed. The house of full of character and beautifully restored. It is very well equipped with everything you need and more. The children loved the pool toys and spent lots of time having fun in what is a great sized pool, even with 9 people in it. We visited the market at Brantome-en-Perigord which was beautiful and only a 25 min drive away. You can hire canoes here which we didn't do, but it looked lots of fun. The closest bakery was in cycling and running distance (2.5k) in Cherval and the pastries were delicious! The hamlet is very quiet and makes for a truly relaxing holiday!

Owner's Response: Dear Marsha and crew - Julie and I are very happy you enjoyed your stay. The peace and quiet certainly does recharge our own batteries when we stay - our excuse is that the walk/run/ride to the bakery helps combat the additional calories!

A wonderful property exceeded our expectations

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of 8 and there was plenty of space and different areas to allow everyone their own bit of space. The pool and outside area was perfect and well maintained we all spent a lot of time out there. The inside of the house is well equipped with everything you could need, it was also extremely well presented with nice items of art and French style furniture.

The village is very quiet but friendly and would recommend a meal at Le Petit Rossignol in Gouts-Rossignol about a 4 minute drive away very friendly couple run it and the food is good and good value.

The Friday market in nearby Riberac is not to be missed followed by a meal on the way back at Le Calice in Vertaillac dish of the day on Friday is fish and chips with mushy peas and it is excellent.

Owner's Response: Thank you Dawson family. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. We figure if we really enjoy staying there as a family... others might too :) Thanks too for the idea of additional outdoor lighting - this will be a nice addition in the near future I suspect.

What a lovely house in a beautiful area of France

  • 5 of 5

We had a family holiday. My parents, us and my brother's family. Altogether we were 6 adults and three children. The pool is a great feature as it is a good size. Our children loved it as did the adults! There was enough space on different levels to be able to have some time away from the rest of the family if needed. The children loved the choice of movies and the PS4. The kitchen was very well equipped making it easy to cook away from home for so many people. The only thing we missed was a bike for the children. My partner went out cycling and my son (8) wanted to go with him, but although there were plenty of bikes there, they were all too big. Maybe next time he'll be tall enough. We went on many day trips in the area and the children particularly enjoyed the caves and the canoeing. Every morning we had fresh bread or croissants from the bakery in the next village. We really enjoyed our holiday at Petit Laurier. Thank you so much for opening your house to us.

Owner's Response: Thank you Sandy. We are glad you and your family enjoyed the stay. The pool is quite relaxing especially on those warm summer days! Good idea about the bike. I will add the size of the bikes currently available so people know.

Fantastic place to relax with friends!

We had a great stay at the house! For 9 adults it was so spacious with room to read alone but then also socialise. The views are beautiful and it is so peaceful! Will be going back!

Beautiful spacious family home with all modcons

  • 5 of 5

Our 2 families have just returned from this charming family home having spent an idyllic 2 weeks in this beautiful region. The lovely gardens, pool and decking area were perfect for relaxing in the sunshine, and the sunroom was equally well used as a cool, comfortable lounge area to retire into from the heat.

The house is well equipped to meet all age-groups' needs. We especially liked the vast array of entertainment on offer: Books and board games; efficient wi-fi; PS3 (+ tons of games); 1000s of DVDS (literally); sky box with all uk programmes available; 5 bikes if you are feeling more energetic, plus lots of picturesque running routes right on the doorstep.

Bedrooms and beds were all very comfortable and the kitchen area is well equipped with dishwasher, microwave, washing machine and drier.

There's a bakery/grocery shop and fab bar in the local village, Cherval, a 2 minute drive away, and we found some lovely places to eat in the nearby town of Verteillac (8min by car). Also not to be missed is a restaurant/Chambre d'hôte called A table/ Luminaire run by 2 Brits where we had 2 really gorgeous meals. Rode there on the bikes once(20mins) and walked another time(50mins).

Day trips to Brantome, aubeterre, Bergerac and Lac Jemaye also well worth visits.

All in all we had an amazing time at this

Location and I would thoroughly recommend to anyone. We will return!
