300-year Old Stone Farmhouse In A Small Hamlet. Private Pool & Beautiful Views

Updated: 23-Oct-2016
4/5 Bedroom Farmhouse near Duras, Lot et Garonne, Aquitaine / Dordogone, France - Peaceful Countryside Location, 3 Miles To Duras (47) & Monsegur (33) Both X111 Century Bastide Town

Situated in the small hamlet of Sainte-Colombe-de-Duras (around 108 inhabitants) in the Lot-et-Garonne, a short drive to the historic bastide towns of Duras, Monségur & Eymet, La Grivet has wonderful views over the surrounding valley & countryside towards the local Roman church.

For a great day out visit Bordeaux, Bergerac and St. Emilion and of course the numerous vineyards that feature in this part of France.

La Grivet is an ideal venue for a relaxing holiday for friends and families and the area has something for all ages to enjoy. The area is steeped in history and located in a particularly beautiful part of SW France.

Once an abandoned farm, La Grivet is now a lovely 300-year old stone house that took 8 years to restore by a team of international architects, designers & local artisans. The result is a beautiful home which has preserved the original stonework & beam construction and it has lots of lovely architectural features.

La Grivet is located in a sleepy hamlet, nestled in gorgeous countryside, but only a few minutes drive from the historic market town of Duras. The property very comfortably provides adaptable accommodation for 8 guests, plus 2 babies in cots, in 5 bedrooms.

The Moroccan style mezzanine Reading Room over the salon has twin beds and these can be used as a fifth bedroom if required. It has privacy curtains.

On the first floor there is a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and shower over the bath and a twin room with an en-suite shower room and walk-in shower. These rooms are accessed from either the Moroccan style mezzanine Reading Room over the salon or from the second staircase in the Great Hall Games Room.

On the ground floor there is a lovely large double bedroom located next to the salon and down a couple of steps. This room has double French windows overlooking the garden and French doors leading onto a private terrace with outside cold shower and beautiful views over the grounds and countryside. There is a separate ground floor shower room for this bedroom.

The Barn Loft bedroom with privacy curtains, was originally a hay loft, and is accessed via its own private antique wrought iron and wooden staircase in the Great Hall.

The house has all the modern comforts you would expect, including under floor heating, original fireplaces & wood burning stove, modern bathrooms & a large well-equipped kitchen/breakfast room. There is free WiFi, a 42” Flatscreen Satellite TV with English & French channels, DVD/CD Player, selection of international films & music, Playstation & a pool/billiards table.

The local Roman church with its murals is an easy stroll.

Vineyards are within easy reach.

Grivette is so unique and so stunning that it is hard to know where to start in reviewing it. From the moment you drive through the wrought-iron gates into the property, you are surrounded by views that are bite-the-back-of-the-hand beautiful - especially the vista of the ancient church glimpsed through the plum orchards. The charming grounds of the house been designed to create a number of different spaces: a dappled verandah with table and chairs for morning coffee, a sun-drenched terrace laced with terracotta urns, vines and lavender; rolling lawns with fig and plum trees, wishing wells and ancient carts. And that's not even counting the swimming pool or the barbecue area.

Once inside, you can see that the owners have spared nothing in creating a truly memorable holiday home. The living areas in the spacious interior are double height and adorned with ancient French art and artefacts, but furnished luxuriously and generously with artistic flair. There are endless games, books and videos to watch on the large flat screen TV in case you need to stay inside, or if you feel more energetic the games room is fabulous, replete with table tennis and pool tables. The kitchen is a decent size and well-furnished with a range cooker, although we preferred to barbecue most of our dinners! The sleeping facilities are unusual, with three normal bedrooms, two of which have lovely bathrooms, and two bedrooms which are on minstrel galleries, but which can be made completely private by drawing heavy curtains across. There is also another ground-floor shower-room with a gloriously-drenching shower.

Grivette is the perfect escape: you feel delightfully hidden from the hustle and bustle of everyday life - you are, after all, here some miles away from even the nearest shop. Its remoteness makes for perfect star-gazing, as we found one night, with glasses of local wine to sip and beautiful music drifting from the terrace speakers. Grivette is truly a magical backdrop for a memorable holiday.

We have just returned from a week stay at La Grivete and what a wonderfull week it was! The pictures do not do this beautiful house justice. You couldn't help but say "wow" as you walked into every room. The owners have taken great care in making sure that the decor is in keepin with the character of the house. The outside pool area is fantastic. With a table and BBQ, you can spend all day/evening by the pool as it catches the sun until it sets. The kitchen is very well equiped and you will have absolutely everything you need to self cater - there is a local shop only a 10 minute drive away which catered for our every need. The pool table, dvd's, books and CD's were a lovely touch and made us feel at home. We spent a few days walking around the markets in the local town Duras (10 minute drive) which has a local castle and wineary. The cherry on top of the holiday was the beautiful cat who lives outside the property. She is very friendly and we looked forward to cuddles every morning, it was sad to leave her behind! I would not hesitate to come back here again. Omar, Kathleen and Deborah have been fantastic and answered all of our questions. We will see you next year!
