About this property

Stable Cottage, Sleeps 4 Cosy, characterful original Features,Quantock Hills UK

Stable Cottage is a delightful 2 bedroom property built of local stone sitting on its own in our courtyard. As suggested it is the old stable converted to a private dwelling but kept some of its charming original features. It has twin beds in one room and a double in the other. It is on two floors with a central staircase. Outside is a small sitting are and patio where you can enjoy the sunshine most of the day. There is an acre (2.5 ares) of walled garden so it is very safe for children to play whilst the adults sit or lounge their time away in the many private areas of the garden. It is restful and quiet. The garden is also where the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge is said to have written some of his best poetry and where he gained inspiration for more of his work.
The front of the cottage is covered with climbing flowers and is covered in roses for most of the summer.
Stable Cottage is part of The Old House which was a private residence dating back to the mid1700. Today it is still a private house but has been carefully divided into 3 holiday cottages and two B&B rooms. It sits in the centre of the delightful village of Nether Stowey with its little brook running down the main streets. It is at the bottom of the beautiful Quantock Hills the first area in England to be designated and area of Outstanding natural beauty (AONB). The walks around the area are stunning with views across to Wales, the Mendip Hills, Blackdown Hills and the Exmoor National Park. Nether Stowey is the beginning of the Coleridge way which is a popular 56 mile walk. The village of KIlvce 4 miles away is part of the north Somerset Jurassic coastline where fossils are plentiful. It is a lovely spot to observe the unusual strata formations at low tide and a magnet for walkers and tourists alike. Watchet, and old port with two harbours is a popular destination for strolling around and eating fish and chips in the late evening overlooking the marina. A little further down the road is Dunster with its famous and stunning well preserved castle. The village itself a little gem to visit and savour. To the east of nether Stowey we are within easy distance of the small city of Wells with its fantastic Cathedral and Bishops Palace. Caves to visit at Wookey Hole and Cheddar with its the famous gorge. For those in need of retail therapy there is Clarks Village and can be followed up with a visit to Glastonbury Torr.
National Trust properties are abundant and several are within easy distance from Stable Cottage.
There is so much to do you will need more than one week to see them all.

A lovely property and a beautiful garden
We had a lovely week in the sunshine in Nether Stowey. The property is spacious, the welcome warm and the garden an absolute delight. My teenage boys were delighted by the badminton net in the garden and my nieces loved the space and freedom to play. Manor was really helpful in suggesting places to visit and where to eat, and we all loved the fossil beaches.

Pretty property
Very pretty cottage covered in roses and stunning garden. Stable cottage very well converted with authentic details. 2 good sized bedrooms and very clean modern bathroom. Large enough sitting room , kitchen bit small. Could do with a freezer if you’re staying for a week But a bit dark with only one door in and out. Lovely friendly owners very helpful with local knowledge. Would stay again .

Lovely little cottage in a quiet village
The area was completely new to us, which was a reason for visiting. In these Covid times, both Ann and Manor were very aware and responsible. The self catering cottage is small but it has bags of character and for the 3 of us for 3 nights, it was absolutely fine. Local knowledge from Manor sent us to a lovely little beach and waterfall, rather than the ones I had read about. We also had a lovely wet walk in Great Wood which we all enjoyed. The village has a convenience store, but we also passed by Sainsburys and M&S in Bridgewater to get oven ready food. The garden is huge and my daughter and dog loved it. All very safe and so ideal to let them play as we prepared supper etc. Overall, all very enjoyable. Thank you very much

A lovely spot!
Stable Cottage was cozy and comfortable. The gardens at The Old House were beautiful and we enjoyed sitting out with our books and board games. The internet in Stable Cottage was not great and worked only intermittently, but everything else was great. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Thank you to Manor for making us feel so welcome!

About the host

I was born in rural west Wales and Ann in Devon. We met in the London area when we were both teaching at Chingford. We married in 1975 and moved to Somerset as it was approx half way to both our family homes. We were both headteachers and retired in 2006 but we were not prepared to be idle so we purchased The Old House and resurrected the holiday cottages and added two B&B rooms as there were too many rooms for the two of us. We now have a thriving business and very popular with many guests returning for more.

Why they chose this property

The Old House has a great deal of historical links with the poets Coleridge and Wordsworth as well as others. They were credited with the founding of the Romantic Movement. Tom Poole who owned this house was Coleridge's benefactor and encouraged him to write his poetry.Despite only living in the village for about 3 years he did write some of his best work here. The Coleridge Suite is one of our B&B rooms which was the old library that all the poets enjoyed. It has an acre (2.5 ares) of walled garden which is such a bonus for peace and for plant growth.

What makes this property unique

Historical links are a great attraction and we have many academics visit. We also have our regular budding poets that want to enjoy the room and its atmosphere to gain inspiration from the ghosts of past poets. The walled garden is really a big attraction as there are so many different aspects to enjoy moving with the sun to gain another dimension. It is also well sheltered and good for plants and vegetables. The Old House is also very central to the village but you would never know it as it is so peaceful and relaxing. The big advantage is its position for touring and visiting local attractions. Great for walkers with such and abundance of local trails of all abilities as well as the start of the Coleridge Way walk.National Trust and Heritage attractions are within easy reach and too many to mention. Caves at Wookey and Cheddar. The North Somerset Jurassic coastline 4 miles away at Kilve for those fossil; hunters and Dunster Castle and village 30 mins away. Mountain biking is a secret with the bikers as they want it to themselves. Horse riding in the village and trekking on the Quantock Hills.
There is so much to do that you wil;l need 2 weeks to make an impact.
