Apartment in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town, Scotland - Shops & Bars just minutes' away

Built in the mid-1800s, and refurbished in 2012, Cumberland Street is an elegant main door ground floor listed apartment situated in the heart of Edinburgh’s world famous New Town. You are surrounded by stunning Georgian architecture and are just minutes’ walk away from the vibrant city centre and its attractions, including Princes Street, Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. The restaurants and bars of Stockbridge are also within easy reach on foot.

The Cumberland Bar, which is frequently mentioned in the 44 Scotland Street novels, is a few steps away at the end of the road. Local shopping is a few minutes’ walk up Dundas Street. The apartment is very spacious, combining modern benefits, including a recently installed kitchen and bathroom, whilst retaining many of its original features such as the traditional sash windows with operating shutters, “Edinburgh presses” and ornate cornicing. Period furniture throughout combines tastefully with the apartment's heritage.

Gas fired central heating makes the apartment cosy throughout. Free WiFi is also provided, as is Sky (satellite) TV. We also have Amazon Video and Netflix, both of which offer a wide variety of movies and T shows on demand.

There are three large bedrooms, one kingsize, one double and one twin. The twin room also doubles as a library with a floor to ceiling bookcase.

The large kitchen includes a breakfast table but the main dining table is - traditional for Georgian properties in Edinburgh - in the substantial dining hall. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you would expect, including a coffee maker.

In addition to the main bathroom, there is also a separate shower room.

About the Owner

Sarah and I moved to Scotland in 2010 after some 15 years in London. At first I continued to commute down south for a few days each week and Sarah worked in Dundee. We now have a young family, I work in Edinburgh and we are both loving the lifestyle up here.

My family are originally from Scotland and we wanted somewhere more relaxing to live and with access to the countryside. It has been a great move for us and we are really well settled in now.

Warm , homely , great location

Great apartment ! Warm , clean , homely And very cosy , well equipped. No apartment stairs for tired legs to climb after a busy day walking into ,and around , the city is a definite bonus !

Super pub The Cumberland bar a stroll away at the end of the street and Stockbridge is full of lovely places to dine , again within walking distance so no taxi fares ! We loved the Stockbridge Restaurant .

Nick and Sarah fantastic responsive owners . Really enjoyed staying here and look forward to staying again soon .

Classic decor, perfect location.

We stayed at this lovely apartment so as to attend a family wedding and also enjoy the city of Edinburgh.

The owners have provided every convenience, from a complimentary bottle of wine (& hot drinks requirements) to shopping bags (shops do not provide these in Scotland.) We were grateful for the hot water and heating as October temperatures were chilly especially in the evenings.

We felt that some of the facilities would benefit from attention. We made the owners aware of the main bedroom wardrobe door, which, despite their interesting suggestions would not open...until the last few days when one side opened of its own accord.

No fault of the owners but there were a couple of environmental incidents. There were heavy renovations going on every day in the apartment above...no lazy quiet mornings for us! And our car was boxed in for hours when we parked across at the visitors bay. Fortunately the police were around to assist us in time. People around very friendly and happy to help too.

We've since checked it thoroughly and both sides are opening absolutely fine and without any difficulty so I think we have to put it down as a mystery! Great place in Amazing location

This is a fantastic apartment in a perfect location. Very close to shopping and restaurants and the buzz of new Town, but far enough away for piece and quite. Very kind owners who graciously found and returned some items left behind. Will stay here again!!

Perfect, perfect perfect...

This is a wonderfully located rental. Very spacious, nicely decorated . It has everything you could possibly need and more for a perfect vacation. Just go up the street and there is a pub within 3 minutes walking distance on the corner . The other corner of the street leads you to a street that has groceries stores, cafe's , restaurants, pubs, bus stops. We were 5 adults , myself, husband and 3 adult sons. We felt very much at home here and feel very fortunate that we found such a wonderful rental. We all said if we were to come back we would definitely stay here again . Thank you Nick and Sarah for the treats that you left us,the milk, wine, cookies etc. we very much appreciated having these there upon arrival.Thank you Nick for replying to my emails so quickly and sorry we didn't get to meet up.Thank you for renting to us!

Tremendous location, gorgeous accommodations!

Absolutely perfect location for visiting Edinburgh - well appointed, immaculate flat, terrific kitchen, spacious bedrooms, modern bath and shower room. Front living room an amazingly comfortable room to relax after a day of festival activities, terrific pub with best chips a block away, Cumberland Pub. Tesco Express a block away for supplies. Nick and Sarah were quick to respond with any questions and flexible to our needs, fabulous customer service. Highly recommend and will return again, love visiting Edinburgh and the festival!

From the Owner

The apartment is on Cumberland Street, one of the best known and best located streets in the New Town. It's not a cut through route to anywhere so traffic (and consequently noise) is very low but Dundas Street - the main road up the hill to Princes Street - is right at the end of the road. Being a main door apartment, you get the feeling of living in a house. With its own entrance and grand hallway, coming home is a real pleasure.

Edinburgh is situated on the Firth of Forth. The old docks of Leith are just a 10 minute drive from the apartment. This district is now a lively area with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. The nearest beach is at Portobello (around 10 - 15 minutes' drive) but head out to East Lothian (25 minutes' drive) for quieter out-of-town beaches.


A taxi from the airport will take around 25 minutes and cost approximately £20. The Airport Express bus stops at George Street (easy 5 minute walk down the hill to the apartment), costs £4 one way (£7 return) and takes around half an hour depending on traffic. You can also take a tram to Princes Street which takes around 35 minutes and costs £5 one way (£8 return).

If arriving by train, Waverley Station is around a 10 minute walk - downhill so easy to do with luggage.


The apartment is right in the heart of the New Town. George St and Princes St are both less than 10 minutes' walk (faster coming back as it is downhill!) as is Stockbridge. The vast majority of Edinburgh's city centre attractions are within easy walking distance of the apartment.

From the Owner

It is an incredibly convenient location for almost anywhere in the city centre. When we bought the apartment, it was completely unmodernised and, whilst we have done a lot of work on it, we have retained the period features, such as the cornicing and fireplaces. Even some of the glass in the windows dates from the early 1800s ad the entrance hall has an original flagstone floor which we have stripped and restored.
