Charming French rustic cottage in beautiful rural setting

  • 5 of 5

Bon Courage is a beautiful French cottage at the end of a lane (a car is essential). The fastidiously maintained grounds offer a good first impression on arrival and offer flexibility in terms of use for all three cottages. We stayed in Snowdrop cottage which was the largest one available and it was huge - very long and all rooms were extremely spacious (watch out for the low doorframe into the third bedroom though!). The cottage interior feels very French (in a good way) and was by far the best equipped holiday cottage we've stayed in, with everything you could possibly need and more. It was very hot during our visit and the thick stone walls and shutters did a great job at keeping the interior cool. All three bedrooms had ensuite shower rooms with plenty of hot water on demand and the kitchen was well equipped with fridge freezer, kettle, toaster, microwave etc. The wifi worked really well and the Sky TV was an added bonus, especially for the kids. There was a separate laundry room with a washer and dryer along with outside washing lines, pegs, washing powder, laundry baskets, irons etc. Also outside was the biggest selection of outside games - boules, badminton, giant chess, croquet as well as the indoor pool (albeit a little chilly)! We all had a fab time using these facilities.

The area is really beautiful and although feels very rural, it's not far to get anywhere. The Normandy luge (about 20 mins away) and Pont d'ouilly were great for the kids. Caen is well worth a visit (about 1 hour away) as is Bayeaux.

Communication with the owners was good, they are really quick to respond to any queries. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and we would recommend it to others looking for a typical French cottage.

Lovely well maintained property in rural Normandy

  • 5 of 5

We booked both Snowdrop and Primrose for 2 weeks for a family group of 10, with ages ranging from 6 to 89.:

The whole property is well maintained both inside and out, with all the "home from home" facilities that anybody could ask for.

Our grandchildren loved the pool and the large garden which allowed us to play games, fly kites and just relax.

Stuart and Jacqui the local caretakers were great, sorting out minor issues such as a light bulb not working, they also kept us supplied with fresh vegetables and tomatoes.

The location is very rural, the main noises come from geese cackling and dogs barking (in the distance, not intrusive).

Being August we were amused how many businesses were closed for the month, including some restaurants, this is normal throughout France and not a problem.

The nearest big supermarket is a Leclerc near Vire about 4 miles away.

This spot is for rest and recreation, not for the high life. Bayeaux, Caen, The Normandy beaches and Granville are all about 1 hr away. We also went to Honfleur/Lisieux (2hrs) and Giverney (Monets garden 3.5 hrs). Plus Falais Castle and went boating at Clecy( 40 mins).

Even though only 200 miles south of our English home the weather was so much better - high 20s mostly.

I would thoroughly recommend this property for location, facilities and value for money.

A few points for visitors to this area - it is not very touristy (except for places mentioned) and therefore the number of local Restaurants is limited. From a British standpoint opening times are limited i.e. Lunch closing by 3pm and not re-opening until 7pm. Bit of a problem if you have young children and wish to eat earlier in the evening.

Another thing to look out for is menus in normal restaurants are very same-ish and limited - again we find this fairly normal in France where the local speciality is everywhere and very little difference between establishments. The local speciality which is top of all menus is Andouillette - look it up- not to British taste. Gallettes and Crepe are also a local speciality and these are very good.

One final thing to watch out for is speed traps, they are everywhere. There is one on the right of the road to Vire and also one nearing Clecy. The local Gendarmes are also out in force earning their bonuses. We passed 3 groups within 5 miles on a minor road out of Bayeaux. Speed limits are low by British Standards on very good straight roads. Beware you are expected to go through the many villages at 20mph.

Car: necessary

Either a drive north about 60km through beautiful countryside and villages to the wide expanses of the Normandy landing beaches, or West 50km to the coast facing the channel islands, or another 30km further west/south west to the unmissable Mont Saint-Michel and thence the beaches of Brittany. This is a good central location for exploring a few different beaches and coasts.

Local Information & Activities

Situated in Southern Calvados, Bon Courage gives ample opportunities for those who wish to explore the rich history of the region, which also offers plenty of leisure activities, such as hiking, canoeing/kayaking, golf, equestrian and bike riding.

Following are a few examples:

Historical & Cultural Visits

World War II History

Family Outings

Mont Saint Michel

Undoubtedly this site is one of the most spectacular jewels of France. Its rich history makes a visit to the Mont St. Michel an unforgettable experience. A guided tour is highly recommended, as this will give an excellent and detailed insight of the historical, religious and ‘powerful’ importance of this venue during the French history. The views of and from the Mont St. Michel are stunning.

Bayeux Tapestry

A visit to the Bayeux Tapestry Museum is a must and impressive. The history and events of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman invasion in 1066 is portrayed on a 270 feet long tapestry. The woven details of this historical event pictured on the embroidery are well preserved, considering its age and are breathtaking. Given that this museum is quite popular and in order to avoid long queues an early start is recommended.

William the Conqueror’s Castle ( Falaise Castle)

This is a real gem and a castle worthy of a day’s visit, this castle dominates the town of Falaise and is very impressive. The castle has ongoing restoration to its walls and one can well picture William being born there and growing up as a child. Another great venue to see and enjoy, the tour is mostly inside and undercover with a different way of showing a castle using art, lights and sound to make this a magical visit.
