Family friendly

  • 5 of 5

The gites are all well presented, very clean and provided everything needed for our group of 13 to stay in comfort.

The gardens and surrounding area are beautiful. The kids loved to play on the trampoline and with the sports equipment. The adults had a good go at playing boules on the court. The kids were obsessed with the swimming pool- it's a little chilly, but as soon as you start swimming it's fine.

We found the extra games, books and DVDs in the laundry room useful and the complementary local cider in each hotel was a nice touch.

We found Bon Courage an ideal base for exploring Normandy. There's so many things to do that we wished we had booked 2 weeks rather than 1. Our highlights include tobogganing at the Viaduc de la Souleuvre, visiting the beautiful beaches, the Villedieu de poule market and a day trip to Mont-Saint-Michel.

We look forward to returning!

The property is inviting, clean and comfortable set in the beautiful Normandy countryside.

  • 5 of 5

We book 'Bon Courage' on a regular basis to accommodate groups of people we have come and stay with us. The booking process is straight forward and accessible and the refund of the deposit is prompt. The owners are easy to contact if there is anything we need and the 'local' manager is very friendly and will bend over backwards to oblige any requests we have had. The location is rural and idyllic with plenty of space around the property, including a football pitch and pétanque. There are plenty of board games to borrow as well as access to the internet, satellite TV and Playstation games. The feedback we have received from all of our groups has been particularly positive and we continue to book this accommodation as our first choice before looking anywhere else.

Great holiday house and grounds

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay in the cottage and made the most of the grounds - particularly good for energetic children! The pool was good although a little cool and deep for young children. Lots of games and equipment. Good location for exploring all that Normandy has to offer. A brilliant Summer holiday cottage!

Better on paper than in reality!

  • 2 of 5

Considering the owners had stayed there the week before and we met them as we arrived we were rather taken aback that La Jacinthe and Primrose were not ready. e.g.( La Jacinthe) Fridge not turned on, defrosted and full of water and the whole apartment not cleaned.

Shower drainage was inadequate and if more than one person was taking a shower in ANY part of the property you ended up with a cold shower.

Cleanliness and maintenance left a lot to be desired through-out.

Itinerary of broken items on arrival:- Sofa bed (Children had to sleep on the floor on blow up beds), Window blind, Shower door in Primrose and swimming pool pump. None of this was rectified during our stay.

Swimming pool was too cold to use even on hot sunny days. The filter had not been cleaned for some time which I found frustrating as the owners could have cleaned it while they were staying there.

On the plus side this property was in an amazing area for exploring. The grounds were pretty fantastic with plenty of space for everyone.

Owner's Response: Dear Wayne, To clarify some details, I feel it only fair to respond to this review. Both Primrose & Jacinthe had been thoroughly cleaned & were ready for your arrival. You turned up early, but we did not complain, so were surprised your review claimed it was late, maybe you were still thinking of UK time? The fridge in Jacinthe had been switched off over night (a mistake on my behalf, which I apologised for) so therefore contained a small amount of water in the tray but this was swiftly dealt with as soon as you made us aware. With regards to La Jacinthe it is only suitable for up to 3 people, and this is clearly stated on the website. On arrival your son stated that his family of 4 wished to stay in La Jacinthe, whilst only yourself and your other son would be staying in Primrose which is suitable for 4/6 people . We were not made aware of this arrangement and would have strongly advised against a family of four staying in the smallest of the three available gites. However, to try to accommodate you, I offered to your son, numerous times, extra beds and extra bedding, which was refused. Your son stated that his children were more than happy on the inflatable beds that they had brought with them. Even after your son's refusal of my offer, to set up beds and provide extra bedding, I explained that if he changed his mind, there were extra beds that he could easily move from Snowdrop. The blind in La Jacinthe was not broken before your stay. The swimming pool had been thoroughly cleaned and the filter had been changed that morning and was working correctly. My husband discussed with your son (whilst standing in the poolroom, alongside the working pump) that occasionally the filter bag can become blocked from normal use of the pool. My husband stated that if this happened to contact us and we would ask the property managers to change the filter bag as soon as possible. All the children in our family had enjoyed the pool everyday for the two week previously, not finding the pool too cold! Again, if you had informed us during your stay that the shower door had been broken then we would have asked our property managers to rectify this. Regarding the showers it is not true that only one shower is hot if the others are being used. There is a large hot water tank that supplies hot water to all the showers. This tank works in the same way as all standard water tanks. We are glad that you found the location amazing and the grounds fantastic. Regards Claire

Fantastic property set in splendid grounds - with a Pool!

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of three families looking for a quiet place - but with enough to keep five children occupied for a week.

The property is nert Vire in normandie and is quite a way away from other people. it is three self contained units, a 1 bed, a 2 bed and a 3 bed. All the properties have cooking / kettle / micro and the grounds of the estate contain a pool.

The weather was a little mixed when we visited, but was mostly warm enough for the kids to use the pool every day. The pool house is surrounded by lush grass, a small football pitch, a trampoline and a boules court - loads to do.

We had barbeques most evenings sitting out the back or out the front of the property - you aren't distrubed by anybdy and the kids probably didn't disturb anyone else.

Had the weather been bad the pads all had TV / DVD / Play stations - and hundreds of DVDs. Also loads of outdoor games as indoor ones.

Overall - we had a great week, celebrated two birthdays and a wedding anniversary - what more could you want or need?

Charming French rustic cottage in beautiful rural setting

  • 5 of 5

Bon Courage is a beautiful French cottage at the end of a lane (a car is essential). The fastidiously maintained grounds offer a good first impression on arrival and offer flexibility in terms of use for all three cottages. We stayed in Snowdrop cottage which was the largest one available and it was huge - very long and all rooms were extremely spacious (watch out for the low doorframe into the third bedroom though!). The cottage interior feels very French (in a good way) and was by far the best equipped holiday cottage we've stayed in, with everything you could possibly need and more. It was very hot during our visit and the thick stone walls and shutters did a great job at keeping the interior cool. All three bedrooms had ensuite shower rooms with plenty of hot water on demand and the kitchen was well equipped with fridge freezer, kettle, toaster, microwave etc. The wifi worked really well and the Sky TV was an added bonus, especially for the kids. There was a separate laundry room with a washer and dryer along with outside washing lines, pegs, washing powder, laundry baskets, irons etc. Also outside was the biggest selection of outside games - boules, badminton, giant chess, croquet as well as the indoor pool (albeit a little chilly)! We all had a fab time using these facilities.

The area is really beautiful and although feels very rural, it's not far to get anywhere. The Normandy luge (about 20 mins away) and Pont d'ouilly were great for the kids. Caen is well worth a visit (about 1 hour away) as is Bayeaux.

Communication with the owners was good, they are really quick to respond to any queries. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and we would recommend it to others looking for a typical French cottage.

Either a drive north about 60km through beautiful countryside and villages to the wide expanses of the Normandy landing beaches, or West 50km to the coast facing the channel islands, or another 30km further west/south west to the unmissable Mont Saint-Michel and thence the beaches of Brittany. This is a good central location for exploring a few different beaches and coasts.

Local Information & Activities

Situated in Southern Calvados, Bon Courage gives ample opportunities for those who wish to explore the rich history of the region, which also offers plenty of leisure activities, such as hiking, canoeing/kayaking, golf, equestrian and bike riding.

Following are a few examples:

Historical & Cultural Visits

World War II History

Family Outings

Mont Saint Michel

Undoubtedly this site is one of the most spectacular jewels of France. Its rich history makes a visit to the Mont St. Michel an unforgettable experience. A guided tour is highly recommended, as this will give an excellent and detailed insight of the historical, religious and ‘powerful’ importance of this venue during the French history. The views of and from the Mont St. Michel are stunning.

Bayeux Tapestry

A visit to the Bayeux Tapestry Museum is a must and impressive. The history and events of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman invasion in 1066 is portrayed on a 270 feet long tapestry. The woven details of this historical event pictured on the embroidery are well preserved, considering its age and are breathtaking. Given that this museum is quite popular and in order to avoid long queues an early start is recommended.

William the Conqueror’s Castle ( Falaise Castle)

This is a real gem and a castle worthy of a day’s visit, this castle dominates the town of Falaise and is very impressive. The castle has ongoing restoration to its walls and one can well picture William being born there and growing up as a child. Another great venue to see and enjoy, the tour is mostly inside and undercover with a different way of showing a castle using art, lights and sound to make this a magical visit.
