A Hidden Gem

The most relaxing holiday I've had in years! Our Gite was spotless and the grounds better than shown. With a mixture of pool days and trips to seaside and Festyland everyone was more than catered for. We can't wait to book again.

A well spent Easter week to remember

  • 5 of 5

On arrival we found it clean, tidy and the property managers Jacqui and Stuart were very helpful. From our bedroom window there were excellent views of the countryside. From the many walks we went on we loved seeing the primroses in the hedgerows. Despite being in secluded and beautiful countryside, just a 10 minute drive away was a large supermarket to stock up on provisions.

I liked the peace, quiet and tranquility. The large gardens and lawns were well maintained.

The gite is set in lovely surroundings with very large grounds and modern indoor heated swimming pool. Accomodation is modern and well maintained and all the facilities are well equipped. Bedrooms are very comfortable, Had a really good time and experience. Access to the road network is easy and found the roads very quiet all week.

Relaxing break in tranquil location

  • 5 of 5

The property and grounds were more spacious than they looked in the photos. We stayed in Hyacinth which was comfortable and well equipped. The gardens were well maintained and provided plenty of space for children to play safely outdoors. My daughter used the trampoline and swings. There were lots of games, garden activities, books, toys and dvds available to use. The pool is housed in a separate building in the garden with a toilet and shower block which was convenient. There was plenty of seating and space around the pool to watch the kids splash around while we relaxed. We used the barbecue in the garden and sat at one of the picnic benches to eat. The gite is in a very quiet location but there were shops and towns within easy reach by car. We visited a local market, spent a day at Festyland theme park and visited beautiful beaches. Perfect location to unwind. We would love to explore more of Normandy and hope to stay at Bon Courage again. Thank you for a relaxing, stress-free break.

Relaxing holiday, tranquil, great to unwind

  • 5 of 5

The property was comfortable and well equipped. The grounds were maintained to a high standard. There was plenty of space for the children to play and there was a large trampoline and double swing in the huge garden. The pool was very clean and there was plenty of seating and space around the pool to watch the children while we relaxed. The pool had its own shower and toilet block. There were also lots of games, toys, dvds and books available for guestS to use. There were picnic benches and barbecues in the gardens. The property is in a quiet location surrounded by fields and farmland so it was tranquil but there were shops and towns within easy reach by car, About 10 mins away. We visited a local market, went to the stunning beaches and spent a day at Festyland theme park which was very reasonably priced. We also spent time relaxing at the property to unwind. We would love to go back to see more of Normandy. Thank you for an enjoyable stay.

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Either a drive north about 60km through beautiful countryside and villages to the wide expanses of the Normandy landing beaches, or West 50km to the coast facing the channel islands, or another 30km further west/south west to the unmissable Mont Saint-Michel and thence the beaches of Brittany. This is a good central location for exploring a few different beaches and coasts.

Travel:

Eurotunnel/Calais - 250 miles approx 4 hours

Caen (Ouistreham) - 50 miles approx 1 hour

Cherbourg - 80 miles approx 1 3/4 hours

St. Malo - 80 miles approx 1 3/4 hours

Dieppe - 140 miles approx 2 1/2 hours

Distances:

Bon Courage, Avilly, is located in PIERRES, which is situated in Southern Calvados (in the heart of rural Normandy). The closest large town is VIRE at approximately 8 miles and VASSY is the nearest village at about 3 miles.

Local Information & Activities

Situated in Southern Calvados, Bon Courage gives ample opportunities for those who wish to explore the rich history of the region, which also offers plenty of leisure activities, such as hiking, canoeing/kayaking, golf, equestrian and bike riding.

Following are a few examples:

Historical & Cultural Visits

World War II History

Family Outings

Sports

Mont Saint Michel

Undoubtedly this site is one of the most spectacular jewels of France. Its rich history makes a visit to the Mont St. Michel an unforgettable experience. A guided tour is highly recommended, as this will give an excellent and detailed insight of the historical, religious and ‘powerful’ importance of this venue during the French history. The views of and from the Mont St. Michel are stunning.

Bayeux Tapestry

A visit to the Bayeux Tapestry Museum is a must and impressive. The history and events of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman invasion in 1066 is portrayed on a 270 feet long tapestry. The woven details of this historical event pictured on the embroidery are well preserved, considering its age and are breathtaking. Given that this museum is quite popular and in order to avoid long queues an early start is recommended.

William the Conqueror’s Castle ( Falaise Castle)

This is a real gem and a castle worthy of a day’s visit, this castle dominates the town of Falaise and is very impressive. The castle has ongoing restoration to its walls and one can well picture William being born there and growing up as a child. Another great venue to see and enjoy, the tour is mostly inside and undercover with a different way of showing a castle using art, lights and sound to make this a magical visit.
