About Charles Stewart

Charles and Jenny first visited the River Yealm by yacht in 2002 with their three girls, after circumnavigating France through the canals and the French coast. Since then they have gradually moved their current yacht "Shangri la" in family holidays from Turkey and she is now based just up from Coastguards on the Yealm.

When they first saw One Old Coastguards, they fell in love with the location and the property and the comfort of a "land based" yacht - the only disadvantage of not moving does not seem to matter - with the ever changing views and river activity!

Charles Stewart purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Charles Stewart chose Wembury

Old Coastguard cottage waterside location, surrounded by National Trust land and the scenic costal walks provide an unbeatable combination. We loved the character of this 1835 listed cottage and the rich history of the Coastguard cottages, built largely to prevent smuggling and rescue shipwrecked sailors.

What makes this cottage unique

The location of this cottage is unique and the views are dynamic. Being near the water allows one to be in tune with the weather and tides at all times. In addition the area is a walker's paradise. The surrounding area is outstanding with villages to explore and the cities of Plymouth and Exeter nearby.

Indoors, the old range is a reminder of the history of the cottage when the coastguard protected us from smugglers and wreckers. However we do like the convenience of an Aga and induction hob for modern cooking! In addition the advantages of broadband and other modern facilities are also on offer.

The most tranquil holiday we have taken in the UK, bar none, ever.

  • 5 of 5

Wow! This was the most tranquil holiday we have taken in the UK, bar none, ever.

As far as holidays go, this was pretty unique for a number of reasons - beautiful location, sense of isolation, cracking house, quirky transportation and waking up to a view that just makes you grin, ear to ear, every day.

You feel kind of privileged to be there - you have your own beach, your own crab fishing jetty, your own National Park for a back garden - and because you are on the crook of the estuary, you get the most fantastic panoramic view of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo beyond. My kids loved it - a real change from the everyday for them. We used our car once - and that was to visit a beach a few miles away.

Would we recommend it? No! (we want next Easter for ourselves).

To sum it up, we had a great time and came home totally relaxed. Totally!

Owner's Response: We too feel privileged to stay there and the view of the Mew Stone and Cornwall in the distance never fails to take our breath away - and is always different, due to the light and weather!

Picture postcard stay

The cottage was very clean and pretty with amazing views of the river. It was a joy to be able to hear the tide rippling past and with no road to or from the cottage there is no road noise. The ferry trip across on arrival was easy though there is the risk of it not running in bad weather - 65mph gusts on our last day meant we made the decision to leave the day before to row all our things back across to our van. We took our own kayaks and paddleboards by towing them across behind the cottage row boat and used these to visit the local pub with its own pontoon. Plan ahead for food provision as nipping to the shops takes 20 mins by boat or a good 40 min hilly walk! We all had a great adventure and would like to go again in summertime for longer.

Owner's Response: Getting to Coastguards is is part of the attraction and it can be very cosy with a gale blowing - but do make sure you have some provisions - although we do leave basic supplies. In case of bad weather it is possible to access the cottage via a farm track for loading and unloading that gets you to within 200m of the cottage.

No words would do justice to express the 2 week holiday we experienced at the cottage. At first we were apprehensive about a cottage with access via a boat and having to leave our car on the other side of the river. Additionally we were worried about having to bring all our luggage over by boat. But let me say, that this only added to the adventure! We ended up using our car 3 times over the 2 week period! From the cottage you are minutes from the coastal path with the most scenic views and endless miles of breathtaking beaches. With the boat and kayaks provided, you can explore the river and have access to many more days out.

The cottage itself is superb, fresh and clean, with spectacular surround views. You can sit for hours gazing out to sea watching the constant action of boats going in all directions.

All in all, this was by far our most adventurous and exciting holiday experience to date. We immediately booked another 2 week stay for the coming summer.

Charles and Jenny were amazing and hands on, helping us out with all and familiarising us with the ways of life on the river etc.

Beautiful, quiet setting with amazing view

We stayed here for New Years Eve 2016. We had a really lovely time. It was very remote which made it all the more special and a great place for a bit of R&R! The property has great amenities and the view over the river is the most amazing thing to wake up to every morning. Would highly recommend to friends and family.
