Overview

About the property

Farmhouse and gite with large pool. Peaceful location on the Charentes / Dordogne border, close to both Cognac and wine making. Suitable for 2-3 families.

Suitable for two or three families wanting to holiday together in a private environment, Belle Etoile is a luxuriously converted 19th century farmhouse and loft apartment combining rustic charm and contemporary chic. Situated in an unspoilt, peaceful hamlet with stunning rural views across rolling countryside, close to Villebois Lavalette on the Poitou-Charentes/Dordogne border, approximately 25 minutes drive south of Angouleme. During the peak season from June to September we only let the property out for exclusive use on a weekly basis, however off peak and subject to availability we will consider enquiries for smaller parties wishing to use one or other of the properties.

About Gareth Wilding

We are Emma and Gareth Wilding from Maidenhead in Berkshire, UK.

My husband works in finance and I run a self-employed business hand-making curtains, Roman blinds and soft furnishings - many of which are evident at Belle Etoile.

We have two daughters, 12 and 17 years old, and a dopey giant labradoodle called Buddy

Gareth Wilding purchased this farmhouse in 2013

Why Gareth Wilding chose Ronsenac

We bought Belle Etoile in 2013 as somewhere to enjoy holiday times with family and friends, and we could not be more delighted with our second home.

The local welcome we have received has been quite overwhelming, but the property and its peaceful location with stunning views across the rolling countryside ensure complete relaxation from the moment of arrival.

If you have stayed at Belle Etoile before under its previous ownership we hope we can encourage you back and that you will be pleased with the changes and improvements we have made during our brief tenure.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Enjoy the quiet seclusion without being completely isolated or remote.

The unique swimming pool with 20m length-lane is ideal for maintaining a training regime, and the surrounding terrain is very popular with cyclists of all abilities and the whole package is perfect for triathletes!

A very well-equipped games barn offers plenty to do for those who want a break from the sunshine, while the boulodrome offers some healthy competition for those who don't, and nothing can beat a sundowner on the pool-terrace.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Absolutely fantastic... Sadly we were only staying for 36 hours but so wish it could have been 36 days or even weeks. The house and gardens are just perfect for either a small or large group with amazing attention to detail at every opportunity. Looking forward to our next visit to enable us to do a little more discovering.

We were completely blown away by the view from the garden of Belle Etoile: a vast field of beautiful sunflowers and in the distance trees and rolling hills. As befits a summer home, the property has a lovely barbecue area and entertaining space and a fully enclosed pool of ample size with plenty of loungers for sun bathing alongside a comfortable seating area for sipping chilled Rose whilst enjoying the view. The main house is very cosy and comfortable, with a fully equipped kitchen and a good-sized sitting room in which to relax after dinner. The property has a gite next to the main house, which has recently been modernised and includes two double bedrooms with new en suite bathrooms. One of the barns has been converted into a games room which, amongst other things, houses a pool table, table football and a table tennis table. The surrounding villages are pretty and very French with some lovely restaurants. There is also a conveniently located hypermarket a short drive away. I would not hesitate to recommend Belle Etoile as a home from home and we will definitely be returning.

We stayed here in October half term and had incredible weather which meant we could enjoy the amazing outside area at Belle Etoile. My husband and I swam in the pool (we are quite brave unlike our fair weathered friends we were holidaying with !). We had all our meals outside enjoying the spectacular views. The evenings became cooler so we spent these inside house which is extremely well equipped. It is obvious that the owners use this as their second home as there is everything you need to put together a meal for friends and family. The bedrooms are really nicely furnished and we will return again this year if we can !

We had a FANTASTIC two weeks at Belle Etoile. It was everything we dreamed of! The property is stunning. The house is perfect and had everything we needed. The views from the house are stunning along with the pool and garden. Great location with lots to do and visit. We took our bikes and did lots of cycle rides through beautiful french villages. We were a party of 12 (6 adults and 6 kids) and we all had a brilliant time. We will definitely be back! Thank you x

What a wonderful location for a cosy Christmas. Central heating, Log fires, beautiful walks and loads of lovely red wine. Great time had by all

Half Term Short Break

  • 5 of 5

We have visited Belle Etoile before in 2014 during the summer. This year we decided to visit in October for a week during half term. The house is immaculate and home from home. As soon as you arrive and your car tyres crunch onto the large gravel parking area, you begin to relax. Opening the door to the country style kitchen continues the process. The house has a comfy lounge and well equipped kitchen with everything you will need for the family. The furnishings throughout are stylish and you soon feel that your holiday has begun, yet you feel like you are at home.

The bedrooms had very comfy beds, with one super king and plenty of space for large families. There is even more accommodation on the second floor, which we did not need to use. We also booked the Garden Room, which is freshly furnished with a double bed and an ensuite with wet room style shower.

For October, we were not expecting much from the weather, but we were blessed with three days of full sunshine🌞? with temperatures up to 25*C. The pool was still running and by 4:00pm both our boys were in for a swim (braver than me!) When the weather is less suitable for swimming, the games room is ideal for the whole family to get together and have fun trying out pool, darts, table football and table tennis. A great replacement for the kids sitting staring at screens!

This area is quiet, relaxing and when sitting outside with a large glass of wine watching the sun create some of the best sunsets, cooking on the fire pit and listening to the French tree frogs in the pomegranate trees, there is nowhere better.

The local area hosts many quaint villages including Ronsenac, Villebois-Lavalette, Brantome, and if you need a town you are only 30 minutes from Angouleme. There is also a well stocked Super U a few minutes drive in Villebois-Lavalette.

I recommend Belle Etoile and will be booking for 2018.

A stunningly beautiful location which is matched by the tastefully modernised and decorated property

  • 5 of 5

This was our third visit in three years to Belle Etoile and we will be back. Relaxing by the pool or eating under the pergola faced with the view of the Charante countryside is a little slice of heaven. The unusual shaped pool gives space for length swimming as well as inflatable play. The ample number of sun-loungers with cushions nestle under two large parasols or you can sit on the outside sofa. Inside is equally relaxing with a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and a cosy sitting room. For the more active, there is a petanc piste (with lights for the evening) and for children of all ages a games room with pool, darts and table footie. There are plenty of walks in the surrounding countryside and the roads are quiet for cycling. The nearby village or Villebois provides a decent butcher and baker as well as one of the best stocked supermarkets. There is plenty to explore locally but this time we opted for lazy days by the pool.

We didn't want to come home and can't wait to return.

Beautiful Property

  • 5 of 5

The property is superb. The uninterrupted views across wonderful french countryside are incredible. I instantly relaxed. The house is so spacious; easy to spend time with lots of other people without tripping over one another. Brilliant pool too. And loads of space outside.

Definitely going back. Owners very helpful and keen to ensure that we loved our stay. Which we did!

Beautiful property, idyllic location - just superb

  • 5 of 5

Bit of a late review considering it was nearly a year ago - but paying the balance to return again this year has invoked some great memories.

The location is the first thing that hits you - the view from the grounds seems to go on for ever. the house, imposing as it is, nestles beautifully into the surrounding landscape, enhancing the view rather than detracting from it. Sitting by the pool and looking across the valley with a G&T is as near to perfect as you achieve.

The interior is perfectly suited for large groups of family and friends - it seems to have everything both adults and kids could need for a blissful holiday.

The additional bonus was the weather we had - unbroken sunshine!

Would recommend a visit to the Cave de Saint Sornin for some brilliant local wines and products.

Looking forward to returning in just a few weeks time to make some more memories.

Gorgeous house & pool in glorious French countryside - exceeded all expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We rented Belle Etoile for a week for a family gathering and celebration for 14 (adults & children). We rented the farmhouse, gite and garden room. Each element is beautifully decorated and it worked brilliantly as a combination for families with children and adults.

The farmhouse accommodated the families with well proportioned rooms and gorgeous views. and the children loved the top floor rooms - especially as the height is a little limited so best for adults to duck! A perfect den for cousins to enjoy.

The gite is a fabulous space and the garden room a perfect sanctuary. The furnishings are beautifully done.

There are wonderful areas to all get together by the pool, outside dining area and kitchen but it has enough space for everyone to unwind and relax too. We enjoyed fabulous weather and loved the pool - the big sky and views are fabulous. The pool is cleverly designed - the extra length swimming lane is perfect for working off the extra breakfast croissant! The games room was enjoyed by all and is lovely and cool on a hot day - perfect for a bit of family competition be it pool, table tennis, table football. We rented bikes and cycled to the tennis court in nearby Ronsenac and did some short forays around the very quiet roads (good for children on bikes). The surrounding area is great and we enjoyed day trips to Aubeterre, the market at Riberac and the lake at la Jemaye.

The owners are extremely friendly and could not have been more helpful.

All in all a brilliant week and a perfect spot. We were all sad to leave at the end of the week. Thank you Belle Etoile for some wonderful memories.
