About Fiona Howard

The next generation has taken on the mantle of caring for Winters Cottage. Our grandparents moved from Scotland to Warwickshire in the 1930s. We three ‘Winter’ sisters live in South Warwickshire and manage the cottage as a holiday destination, project managing the maintenance and restoration with care. Black ranges, box beds in the kitchen and oil lamps have all gone. Babies are no longer born at the cottage – our children no longer walk across the field to the primary school by the river at Cortachy. But this bothy still holds a special place in our hearts. We have passed our love of the cottage to our children and the next generation – the 7th in line – are now enjoying the magic of this special place. History repeats itself. How wonderful to know that some things don’t change.

Fiona Howard purchased this cottage in 1860

Why Fiona Howard chose Angus

In 1860 James Winter moved to the cottage from his father’s farm in Glen Prosen where he raised 5 children with his wife Eliza. He opened a post office and drapers store to sell linen from his business in Laurencekirk in what is now the kitchen/morning room. We can just remember the mahogany shop counter, wooden floors and open fire in the 1950s. The shop closed in the late 50s but we still have mementos of times gone by, including hand made linen, Victorian furniture and books, a family bible and a clock given by Peter Pan author J M Barrie to his sister who married cousin William. The cottage was handed down the generations to our father Donald and on to our generation. We are proud caretakers for generations to come and we hope you love the cottage as much as we do!

What makes this cottage unique

Really easy to reach yet set in glorious highland scenery. At Perth you’ll soon be there. See the Grampian mountains coming into view. By Kirriemuir look out for Peter Pan; that’s where he comes from and he’s never grown up! Can you see the red squirrels or deer feeding by the castle? Through the woods, over the river and up to Dykehead. You’re there and only 15 minutes since you left a different world. Sit under the verandah with a cup of tea and gaze at the wonderful view. It’s great to be back. Riverside walks, fishing, golf and the glens on your doorstep. Walk the coastal path or picnic at Lunan Bay 35 minutes away. Visit historic Perth or Dundee, city of Scott’s Discovery.

Guestbook comments from the owner

‘Winters Cottage is a little gem’

‘Another great week. Snow on the hills, osprey and marsh harriers on Loch of Kinnordy. Good Food at the Drovers Inn. Still finding new walks after 10 years!’

‘Red squirrels from the kitchen window – lovely surprise! Exceeded all our expectations’.

Everything we wished for. SUPERB,

  • 5 of 5

We explored different parts of the surrounding area every day and still didn't do everything we wanted to. Glen Clova was a complete delight, so many different walks from the same starting point.

Glamis Castle , Duntottar Castle, Edzell Castle and the House of Dun were all superb in their own very different and unique ways. We can highly recommend a visit to any of these places.

The Drovers Inn serves superb quality food, a brilliant way to spend an evening. In addition the Airlie Arms in Kirriemuir was also superb (mind, we were wanting to watch the football and they catered for our every need). Great food and company here too.

As well as visiting castles were also enjoyed several woodland walks, where we saw a couple of red squirrels, whilst in Augusta's Walk (at House of Dun) we surprised a deer and fawn, after several seconds of staring at each other (us and the deer) the deer ambled off into the woods. In addition Lunan Bay was a great beach walk, with a ruined castle at one end and a cave at the other. The cafe there was superb and offers a selection of "free from" goods in the shop area.

The cottage was very well appointed and we lacked for nothing, the kitchen was very well stocked with utensils. We loved the history of past residents of Winters Cottage, it gave a sense of a family home rather than a rental cottage. There is nothing can can be done to improve on the cottage. We loved watching all the birds, rabbits and pheasants first thing in the morning exploring the garden. What a great way to wake up!

There is nothing to fault about the cottage, the location or activities to do in the area. We have fallen hopelessly for Dykehead, Angus and its environs. Everyone we spoke to was friendly and couldn't have been more helpful.

We will definitely be back, possibly as soon as next year.

Well presented, fully equipped, clean, comfortable cottage affording good views.

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent two weeks in this charming cottage, which is well situated for exploring the central area of the Cairngorms and eastern coast - most within approximately one hour's drive. The history of the Winter Family added to the character and comfortable ambient experience of this Cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the accessible walks nearby and the views from the Airlee Monument were spectacular. Visits to the Glens and the Lochs were most rewarding and afforded us the privilege of viewing some of Scotland's finest views and wildlife......particularly the red squirrels and the Ospreys nesting on Loch Balgavie. Visits to Crathes and Craigiever Castle and House of Dun, also within easy reach. All in all, a lovely base for anyone wishing to explore this part of the Country. Thanks to Fiona for all the information and the very comprehensive information guides in the Cottage.

Charming and cozy cottage...

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our first vacation in Scotland and were very glad to stay in this lovely cottage. The cottage is well equipped and everytime after returning from a daytrip it made us feel "coming home ".

We loved the quietness and the nearby glens a lot. Although the weather was cold, we could do some nice hikes in the Glens and afterwards warm up at the Climbers Bar at Glen Clova Hotel. Great place for muddy boots with logfire.

Daytrips to Glamis, the Cairngorms and St.Andrews were easy and nice. We skipped Edinburgh due to the weather. Will have to come back😎? to see the rest of the eastern part of Scotland.

Fiona was very helpful in advance with many information on directions, opening hours etc.

We also appreciated the detailed information files in the cottage.

The kitchen was well equipped, the cottage is spacious with two bedrooms, a morning room seatings for four and a very cozy livingroom.

We will definitly come back one day! Thanks a lot!

Lovely, comfortable cottage of character.

  • 4 of 5

Winters Cottage is very well equipped, comfortably furnished and has real character. It was great to come home from walking in the nearby glens to a hot bath and an open fire. The autumn colours in the area and lovely large garden were glorious. The owner was exceptionally friendly and helpful to deal with and the family care for the cottage and the guests shines through. We had not holidayed in this part of Scotland before but would like to come back and enjoy it in spring or summer. Thank you Fiona.

Winters cottage is situated in an exceptional area for keen walkers and is the ideal spot for those looking for a walking holiday. Situated at the edge of the Cairngorms national park, the cottage is surrounded by four historic glens with paths ranging from easy to extremely strenuous (see Angus Glens Walking Festival June 2017). The Winter family recommends ‘Jock’s Road’ in particular; named after one of its bravest ancestors Jock Winter, a local shepherd, who battled to keep the path open in 1887 .

The nearest recommended beaches to Dykehead are Lunan Bay (35 minute drive) and blue flag awarded St Andrews (40/45 minute drive), 28 and 35 miles away respectively. Look carefully and you might spot some dolphins! Both beaches are stunning with clean, safe bathing and wide sands for walking or having a picnic. There is plenty of parking and from the beach at St Andrews it is easy to walk into town at the end of the day for supper before making your way back to the cottage.
