2 bedroomed cottage with stunning panoramic view 200 metres from the glens.

A comfortable, cosy and archetypal Scottish cottage steeped in history with a southerly panoramic view; Winters Cottage has 2 bedrooms, sleeps 4 and is situated in the small hamlet of Dykehead near Glens Clova and Prosen, at the edge of the stunning Cairngorms national park. A welcoming cottage surrounded by breathtaking countryside is the perfect spot for keen walkers, golfers, fishers and those looking to unwind at the end of the day with a glass of wine and a good book beside a roaring log fire! Rural, yet within touching distance of the coast and some of Scotland's great towns and cities - Winters Cottage is a little gem.

Please note we welcome children over 5 years. Unfortunately we don't have facilities for younger guests.

We are members of Visit Scotland (3 star rating - 'very good').

Unfortunately we are unable to accept pets.

About Fiona Howard

The next generation has taken on the mantle of caring for Winters Cottage. Our grandparents moved from Scotland to Warwickshire in the 1930s. We three ‘Winter’ sisters live in South Warwickshire and manage the cottage as a holiday destination, project managing the maintenance and restoration with care. Black ranges, box beds in the kitchen and oil lamps have all gone. Babies are no longer born at the cottage – our children no longer walk across the field to the primary school by the river at Cortachy. But this bothy still holds a special place in our hearts. We have passed our love of the cottage to our children and the next generation – the 7th in line – are now enjoying the magic of this special place. History repeats itself. How wonderful to know that some things don’t change.

Why Fiona Howard chose Scotland

In 1860 James Winter moved to the cottage from his father’s farm in Glen Prosen where he raised 5 children with his wife Eliza. He opened a post office and drapers store to sell linen from his business in Laurencekirk in what is now the kitchen/ morning room. We can just remember the mahogany shop counter, wooden floors and open fire in the 1950s. The shop closed in the late 50s but we still have mementos of times gone by, including hand made linen, Victorian furniture and books, a family bible and a clock given by Peter Pan author J M Barrie to his sister who married cousin William. The cottage was handed down the generations to our father Donald and on to our generation. We are proud caretakers for generations to come and we hope you love the cottage as much as we do!

What makes this cottage unique

Really easy to reach yet set in glorious highland scenery. At Perth you’ll soon be there. See the Grampian mountains coming into view. By Kirriemuir look out for Peter Pan; that’s where he comes from and he’s never grown up! Can you see the red squirrels or deer feeding by the castle? Through the woods, over the river and up to Dykehead. You’re there and only 15 minutes since you left a different world. Sit under the verandah with a cup of tea and gaze at the wonderful view. It’s great to be back. Riverside walks, fishing, golf and the glens on your doorstep. Walk the coastal path or picnic at Lunan Bay 35 minutes away. Visit historic Perth or Dundee, city of Scott’s Discovery.

Notes on accommodation: The cottage is heated by 'Total Control' night storage heaters, a multi-fuel burning stove and an open fire. All electricity, coal and logs are included in the price. All prices are fully inclusive and we do not charge VAT. This is a no smoking cottage. We regret we are unable to accept pets. CHILDREN OVER 5 ARE VERY WELCOME. Outside: The cottage sits at the edge of the hamlet and has off road parking for 2 or 3 cars. The private veranda and well maintained garden is on the south side of the house with an uninterrupted, panoramic view over much of Cortachy and the Earl of Airlie's estate to the hills beyond. The cottage provides a BBQ, outdoor furniture and the garden is approximately half an acre in size. Plenty of space for family games on the lawn! Utility Room: The 'boot room' provides an area to store your outdoor sporting equipment. There is an ironing board, clothes drier, picnic basket, cool bag, bucket & shovel for ashes & mop & bucket. Bicycles can be left under the veranda or locked in the garden shed. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The cottage is professionally cleaned after each booking. All linen and 'The White Company' towels are provided. A change of linen and towels is offered mid holiday if there is a 2 week booking. Other: The hall cupboard houses an iron, picnic rug, broom, ladders, light bulbs, torch, shaver/toothebrush charging plug, firelighters/matches, shower mat, cleaning materials etc.

Stunning, peaceful character cottage!!

We had a fabulous stay at Winters cottage, Total peace and quiet, the only noise you will hear will be the wildlife and the wind in the trees.

The cottage is full of character and charm and has everything you need for a self catering stay, very comfortable sofas in both rooms and a pleasure to come home to cook in the cottage after a days walking and then settle down in front of the open fire, Bliss.

The garden is huge and beautifully maintained and you will spot rabbits bobbing around in the morning or late afternoon.

Cannot fault anything about the cottage, the family have thought of everything to make your holiday comfortable and special.

For people that like to keep active I recommend two Munro's Mayar and Dreish both start from Glen doll car park about 40 mins drive away, there are various walks you can do from here to suit most fitness levels, our favourite being the Munros' and Jocks road.

There is a Corbett called Ben Tirran which sits behind the Glen Clova hotel 20 mins drive away, fantastic hill with 2 lochs on the way up, once on the plateau we spotted around 100 red deer with numerous stags amongst them, they watched us for a couple of minutes and then thundered off down the hill, what a sight!!! Pick this hill on a good day as the views are incredible.

Great trail running in the area as well as quiet roads for cycling.

There is a walking and cycling folder in the cottage which is very helpful.

The drovers inn is highly recommended for a nice meal ( 3 miles away) both the restaurant and bar are equally as nice to sit in and the menu is the same for both.

A fabulous active holiday in a stunning comfortable cottage which I would highly recommend, we would love to return.

Homely cottage

Winters cottage is by far the best cottage we have stayed in. Everything was thought of. The kitchen was fully equipped, the furnishings extremely comfortable, it actually felt like a home rather than a holiday let. It was spotlessly clean and tidy. Would I book it again? Yes every time I visit my family I will certainly be booking this cottage if it is available. Thank you so much for letting us stay and the great communications.

Beautiful views and very quiet.

we stayed for four nights and found the cottage to be very comfortable and well equipped. While not used to storage heaters they did warm the cottage up quickly on chilly nights, there is a log burner and open fire if you prefer with a large log pile in the garden to the rear. Fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with bath and seperate shower. Furnished to a good standard with very comfortable beds and sofas. Beautiful views, lovely and clean throughout what more could you want?

For me personally, the quietness was the icing on the cake, just sounds of birds, bees and the wind in the trees, brilliant! I can definitely recommend this cottage and hope to return one day.

Just a lovely well kept family home

The description of the property is well made. What a lovely stay we had. Everything is so well organised - so well thought out. It makes me happy to think this wonderful cottage is in good hands and that it's history and charm can be enjoyed by guests such as ourselves. The location is amazing, with easy access to amazing mountain scenery, whilst also having easy access to the coast and towns

Fantastic place in a great location!

A beautiful family cottage that has lots of history and set in a wonderful location. We spent 3 nights at Winters Cottage. Even though it is set in a tiny village it is near enough to most places.

We saw quite a bit of wildlife whilst staying in the area, deer, rabbits, hawks, falcons, red squirrel and eagles. Cant recommend the cottage enough!

If you like walking, take a short ride to Glen Doll remember to take a packed lunch and enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

Beautiful place -Will return!

We ask for a booking fee of £100. The balance (+ £100 damage deposit) is due approximately 6 weeks before your holiday. The damage deposit is returned approximately 1 week after your holiday. You are welcome to pay either by cheque, bank transfer or on line banking. Please ask for our banking details.

Changeover Day:

Our normal changeover day is Saturday. However, we are very flexible and are happy to consider days that suit you, particularly in low season. Arrival time is 3 pm and departure time is normally 10 am. Again, we are flexible - do please ask.

Notes on prices:
Prices are FULLY INCLUSIVE: i.e. heating/ electricity, coal, logs, linen and towels and we do not charge VAT.

You are welcome to enquire about short breaks. We have a minimum stay of 3 nights (except Nov/ Dec when it's 4/5 nights) (please see 'Property Pricing').

We ask for a £100 deposit with the booking. A £100 damage deposit is due with the balance, 6 weeks before the holiday. The damage deposit is returned approximately 1 week after the holiday.
