About Valerie Walton

After taking early retirement we moved to Berrynarbor, where I maintain the property's and my wife runs a local Preschool.

In 2003 whilst on holiday and out for a walk we first came across two old stone barns which had never been inhabited, apart from one that was a milking parlour. We bought them and with the help of our daughter who is an architect we have converted them into two beautiful homes.Today we live in one and rent out The Old Dairy as a fully modernised holiday home.

Valerie Walton purchased this barn in 2003

Why Valerie Walton chose North Devon

We had been holidaying in the area for 20 years and loved the location, we wanted to move somewhere that was large enough for our family to visit with lots of garden and room for parking, as they all enjoy surfing and outdoor activities, we enjoy the wonderful walks scenery and magical charm of North Devon and Exmoor.

Berrynarbor is a charming picturesque village with a lovely 500 year old pub and a very well stocked village shop. We are just a 10 minute walk away from Watermouth Harbour where in the early 1980's the childrens T.V. series " Famous Five on an Island" was filmed.

What makes this barn unique

The Old Dairy is a charming 500 old stone barn with lots of character and a large garden, however inside it has modern facilities spacious open plan living downstairs, which is great for families or groups of friends. It is next to a working farm with listed farm buildings set in beautiful Devon countryside.

Woolacombe beach voted best beach in the UK is nearby, also Croyde and Saunton Sands all are great for surfing etc.

Ilfracombe Golf course is a 5 minute drive away with amazing views over the sea. Saunton Sands a championship links course is a 20 minute drive away.

We are situated in an area of outstanding beauty on the edge of Exmoor National Park.

Ilfracombe Harbour has many restaurants, boat trips, sea fishing, art galleries and Damien Hurst's statue of Verity.

“Lovely country home”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 6 June 2014 for a stay in May 2014

We have just spent a very enjoyable week at The Old Dairy.

It is spacious, open plan, and very well equipped; the furnishings are very comfortable, so that it quickly becomes a home from home. The configuration of the bedrooms is ideal for a family group of two or three generations, or mix of couples and singles in a group of friends. If the weather closes in there are plenty of books, games and DVDs to keep everyone amused.

Owners Trevor & Val live next door so that any queries can be quickly resolved (although we didn't have any). They were on hand to welcome us - their friendliness and the plateful of home-made scones and cream/jam were much appreciated after the long journey.

It is an ideal position, being in quiet countryside but within a couple of miles of the North Devon coast and the large town facilities of Ilfracombe. There are plenty of walks and places to visit without travelling too far, and the village down the road (literally down the road) can be recommended for its pub and community shop for essential supplies.

“Wow what a beautiful cottage”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 10 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

We spent a week at the The Old Dairy and it was a beautiful property in fantastic area. There were three generations and the open plan of the property was ideal. It was immaculately clean and very well equipped, especially the kitchen. The dresser has games galore inside and there was also a selection of DVDs. We stayed in the Autumn and it was lovely and snug but would love to visit in the summer to make the most of the outside. Trevor and Val the owners are very helpful and I can't wait to visit again as a great time was had by all.

Beautiful house, stunning walks

We really enjoyed our stay at the Old Dairy. What a fantastic place for a relaxing family break, with wonderful walks on the doorstep, and really pretty, quirky village just a stone's throw away. Great pub too!

a very pleasant place to stay, nice to return to the peace and quiet after visiting the sea side towns. lots of facilities available in the house, we loved the coffee machine and it was nice not having to share a bathroom. owners kept a respectable distance but were instantly available when needed.

the area is ideal for visiting lots of different places as it was close to most of them in north devon. we were lucky with the weather and had an opportunity to enjoy the garden

Spacious Barn in Beautiful Berrynarbor

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted to find the Old Dairy online, as our group of 3 couples and 1 single were looking for somewhere with 4 bedrooms, preferably 4 bathrooms and parking for 4 cars in north Devon. The barn is spacious and well appointed. Although on the edge of the village the local pub and shop are walkable but it does involve some steep hills fine if you’re fit, if not take the car. On arrival we found we had been left a cream tea which was much appreciated. The weather was good to us and so we were able to have a BBQ twice in the spacious garden. The only sounds you hear are the birds and cows in nearby fields

The Old Globe inn was used twice for eating; the meals were excellent, very good value and the staff friendly and helpful. The community shop in the village was very well stocked, we bought fresh, “proper” bread from there and they ordered rolls for our BBQ and put by a newspaper for us each day.

You can walk out from the barn using permitted footpaths, shown on the OS maps but not as rights of way. Trevor & Valerie will advise you on the paths. The roads around the barn are narrow the widest road to enter and leave the village is the road at the bottom of the valley joining the main road opposite the Sawmill pub. (It’s well worth going on Google Earth to take a look around)

All of us would go back again

Lovely accommodation in a beautiful location close to Ilfracombe Harbour and the excellent beach at

  • 4 of 5

The accommodation is very spacious and well appointed and the owners are very friendly and helpful. We asked for a travel cot and a high chair and they were all ready for our arrival. The kitchen is very well equipped with a large table seating 8. It is situated on the outskirts of the village of Berrynarbor but you need your car to get to the local shop and pub. My suggestions for improvement would be more comfortable outside furniture to better enjoy the lovely garden and the double bed in the largest bedroom is very low, hard and creaks every time you move.

A charming house in a quiet, beautiful corner of North Devon

  • 5 of 5

Our party, of three couples, used the Old dairy as a base for walking sections of the SW Coast Path from Lynton to Braunton. The house is comfortable, well laid out, well appointed and situated in a very quiet location. We loved recovering from our walks as we sat in the sun in the garden with our tea and listened to the birds in the wonderful trees all around. Our hosts were charming and very helpful. We had a great time!

Beautiful and spacious barn conversion with lots of outdoor space too.

  • 5 of 5

Valerie the owner left us a lovely cream team for our arrival which was a really nice touch. The Old Diary is really roomy on the inside. I loved the country kitchen and quarry tile underfloor heating. We didn't get to use the outdoor space very much but there is lots of lawn, outdoor seating and parking. It's set in a secluded spot of countryside with easy car access to the local area.

We had a lovely stay and really enjoyed it. Hope to be back soon!
