About Valerie Walton

After taking early retirement we moved to Berrynarbor, where I maintain the property's and my wife runs a local Preschool.

In 2003 whilst on holiday and out for a walk we first came across two old stone barns which had never been inhabited, apart from one that was a milking parlour. We bought them and with the help of our daughter who is an architect we have converted them into two beautiful homes.Today we live in one and rent out The Old Dairy as a fully modernised holiday home.

Valerie Walton purchased this barn in 2003

Why Valerie Walton chose Ilfracombe

We had been holidaying in the area for 20 years and loved the location, we wanted to move somewhere that was large enough for our family to visit with lots of garden and room for parking, as they all enjoy surfing and outdoor activities, we enjoy the wonderful walks scenery and magical charm of North Devon and Exmoor.

Berrynarbor is a charming picturesque village with a lovely 500 year old pub and a very well stocked village shop. We are just a 10 minute walk away from Watermouth Harbour where in the early 1980's the childrens T.V. series " Famous Five on an Island" was filmed.

What makes this barn unique

The Old Dairy is a charming 500 old stone barn with lots of character and a large garden, however inside it has modern facilities spacious open plan living downstairs, which is great for families or groups of friends. It is next to a working farm with listed farm buildings set in beautiful Devon countryside.

Woolacombe beach voted best beach in the UK is nearby, also Croyde and Saunton Sands all are great for surfing etc.

Ilfracombe Golf course is a 5 minute drive away with amazing views over the sea. Saunton Sands a championship links course is a 20 minute drive away.

We are situated in an area of outstanding beauty on the edge of Exmoor National Park.

Ilfracombe Harbour has many restaurants, boat trips, sea fishing, art galleries and Damien Hurst's statue of Verity.

“Lovely country home”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 6 June 2014 for a stay in May 2014

We have just spent a very enjoyable week at The Old Dairy.

It is spacious, open plan, and very well equipped; the furnishings are very comfortable, so that it quickly becomes a home from home. The configuration of the bedrooms is ideal for a family group of two or three generations, or mix of couples and singles in a group of friends. If the weather closes in there are plenty of books, games and DVDs to keep everyone amused.

Owners Trevor & Val live next door so that any queries can be quickly resolved (although we didn't have any). They were on hand to welcome us - their friendliness and the plateful of home-made scones and cream/jam were much appreciated after the long journey.

It is an ideal position, being in quiet countryside but within a couple of miles of the North Devon coast and the large town facilities of Ilfracombe. There are plenty of walks and places to visit without travelling too far, and the village down the road (literally down the road) can be recommended for its pub and community shop for essential supplies.

“Wow what a beautiful cottage”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 10 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

We spent a week at the The Old Dairy and it was a beautiful property in fantastic area. There were three generations and the open plan of the property was ideal. It was immaculately clean and very well equipped, especially the kitchen. The dresser has games galore inside and there was also a selection of DVDs. We stayed in the Autumn and it was lovely and snug but would love to visit in the summer to make the most of the outside. Trevor and Val the owners are very helpful and I can't wait to visit again as a great time was had by all.

Beautiful house, stunning walks

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Old Dairy. What a fantastic place for a relaxing family break, with wonderful walks on the doorstep, and really pretty, quirky village just a stone's throw away. Great pub too!

Lovely cottage in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect for our family. There was plenty of room for us all and our 2 dogs, it was also well equipped and had everything we needed to make our stay home from home. The cottage is set in a beautiful location with lots of places nearby to visit and the owners provided a nice cream tea on arrival. We would definitely stay again. Thank you.

Beautiful weather, beautiful spot

  • 4 of 5

We had a great weekend with three other couples staying in The Old Dairy. Our hosts were welcoming and on hand if needed (they weren't everything went smoothly).

The accommodation is comfortable, quiet and spacious and ideal for a party of our size (four couples). We all had our own bathroom which was a real bonus. The owners were also happy to have Boots the dog stay! There is so much to see and do in this area of Devon and if your up for it some really challenging but spectacular coastal walks. We even wore the dog out! To top it all off we had wonderful weather.

Beautifully peaceful lovely house.

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely spacious house with everything included. 3 bedrooms have ensure bathrooms there is also one downstairs for the 4th bed. Room for a couple of families or 4 couples. We were greeted by the owners who left tea and scones on arrival. There was milk and clotted cream in the fridge and ice in the freezer which we appreciated in our G&T in the garden.

The garden is lovely and sunny all day. The 2 dogs we took loved it. Its location is great for exploring the Norrh Devon coast. There is a pathway down to watermouths little harbour and pub. We loved this house. It is very comfortable and spacious. Will definitely consider returning. Thank you Val and Trevor.

Family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at The Old Dairy during the first week of October for a family holiday - six adults, a toddler and a dog.

We had a lovely time. The barn was very spacious and is ideal for a large group. It has a nice big kitchen table for meal times and each bedroom has its own bathroom. The cream tea with homemade scones was lovely after a long journey.

The barn is in a good location, just a short drive the beaches. It's also a short walk into the village to visit the Globe pub - very nice!

This was a nice and comfortable property

  • 4 of 5

the property was well thought out but we did encounter a bad odour which came from the ground floor bathroom/toilet from the start of our holiday which Trevor was unable to fix completely. The beds were comfortable but very low for people of a certain age group (80) I had to roll over on my knees in order to stand up. Thank you for the cream tea which we all enjoyed the next day as we didn't arrive until 6.30pm due to traffic accidents plus several drives around the village whilst trying to locate this property. Our hosts were charming and helpful, we hope that nobody in the area had problems as it would be nearly impossible for the fire service or emergence services to help due to parking by people in the very narrow lanes. The weather was kind to us for this time of year which allowed us to have plenty of good walks much to Rowan our Irish Red & White Setter enjoyed. We had a very good lunch at the Thatch pub in Croyde who were dog friendly as is the beach at Woolacombe, the landlady at Watermouth even offered us a towel to dry our dog who when we dropped by for a coffee one morning. We did find it a little difficult trying to get information like a phone No etc. as we were a party of 7 travelling from Hertfordshire, Surrey, Gloucestershire & Kent, but that may be also because we are not fully internet savvy unlike our hosts who understandably don't wish to be disturbed at all hours but couldn't have been more helpful whilst we were there, thank you.
