Thornton Farm is 5 miles south west from Berwick-upon-Tweed. It is an organic arable farm run by the Smales Family. Thornton is 50 miles from Edinburgh and 50 miles from Newcastle. It is a short drive from Norham Village with Norham Castle, a great pub and local shops. Our nearest pub serves great food and real ale. It is a 20 minute walk from Thornton. We have space for securing your bikes so you can head out along some wonderful cycle routes. The beach is 15 minutes by car and offers fabulous walks along some of the most deserted and beautiful coastline in Great Britain. If you would prefer to stay at home, come and see our miniature donkeys or help collect eggs. We like to leave you in peace and so everything is on offer, but never put upon guests. There are wonderful walks around the farm and guests love to bring their cameras for wildlife watching. For those with children we have a wonderful play park with wooden swings, see-saw, slide, climbing frame and willow playhouse. Perfect for little monkeys and den building.

A warm farm cottage furnished to a high standard with a small south facing enclosed garden to the front. Private parking for two cars next to the cottage. The groundfloor is open plan with a sitting-room, dining-area and kitchen. The shower room is located off the sitting room. The first floor has a large master bedroom with superking size bed and fabulous views out to fields. Sitting-Room has a comfy sofa and arm chair with stool, 32" flatscreen TV/DVD and DAB radio. Dining-Area has a table and chairs for two.

Kitchen has a fridge, microwave, cooker/oven, high quality cutlery, crockery and kitchen equipment. Please note there is not a dishwasher and washing machine in Linnet Cottage. Shower room has a large power shower, local handmade guest soap and stunning slate floor. Linnet Cottage has biomass heating (included in the rental price) and is a truly cosy cottage. Bed linen and fluffy towels are provided for your stay. WiFi access is included in the rental price.

About the Owner

My name is Laura and I work at Thornton Farm alongside my family. We are a small organic farm 5 miles outside Berwick-upon-Tweed. It is very much a family-run business, having lived here since 1948. I have 3 small children; a gorgeous greyhound; a chatty cocker spaniel; 3 miniature donkeys; 1 horse; 1 pony; herdwick sheep; ducks; hens and guinea fowl! We love walks along the beach, riding around the farm and making pancakes with Granny's eggs.

What a a lovely weekend wev had. Cottage has everything u need and is ideal for anyone wanting to get away for a quiet break.

Great little find!!!

Laura is such a lovely person and makes you very welcome, the cottage was in a perfect isolated farm in the middle of nowhere so a great retreat to put your feet up. Some great things to do nearby and some lovely walks, the cottage itself had everything we needed and was very clean. Great stuff Laura, we hope to come back again one day. Chris

A lovely peaceful place to stay and within easy reach of a large number of other places to visit. Laura was the perfect host, welcoming on our arrival, full of local and useful knowledge to make our stay as good as possible and there if you needed her. We had a great weekend, thanks.

You can take a train from Berwick and be in Edinburgh within 45 minutes. There are so many things to see and do. We have lots of guidebooks and tourist leaflets in the cottage for inspiration. The Linnet - Fantastic, well equipped cosy cottage overlooking fields.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Linnet cottage. It was easy to find from the directions given, with ample parking, situated with easy access to touristy sites (the A1 links most places) and only a few miles from Berwick. The location was a lovely ideal setting to return to after a day out. if you want a place where you can walk to the shops etc then this is not it. There are plenty of walks for the dog but after a days outing we found he just wanted to sleep!

The Cottage is well equipped, clean and is ample for 2 persons. The very large 'double' bed was extremely comfortable and we slept well from the start.

Our dog was made welcome, with a well fenced garden. The heating was left for us to decide whether we wanted it on or not and hot water was readily on tap. There was a welcome pack of milk, eggs and flowers and the owner called in on our second day for a chat. She was very welcoming.

Overall we were very pleased with our choice of stay and would highly recommend this cottage.

Location

From the Owner

We are so lucky to live in such a peaceful place. You can see the stars at night, listen to birdsong and even catch a glimpse of deer grazing in the fields. Thornton is thriving with wildlife and it is so special for us to listen to the skylarks. Berwick is perfect for visiting Edinburgh, beach walks, hill climbing and castle spotting. It is off the tourist trail, with no traffic, only gorgeous views and fresh air. Thornton is in a lovely location as we are a distance from a main road, yet within 10 minutes from a shop. We have sheep for neighbours and guinea fowl for guard dogs.

Further Details:

Berwick-upon-Tweed has a leisure centre with gym facilities and swimming pool. There are 4 supermarkets in Berwick and we can accept an online delivery to either cottage the morning of your arrival.

The Plough Inn at West Allerdean is our local pub, this serves good food, real ale all in front of a log fire.

To secure the booking we ask for a 25% non-refundable deposit with the remaining 75% of the holiday rental being due six weeks before the holiday start date.
Our cancellation policy is the booking being non-refundable less than two weeks before the arrival date and 75% of the holiday rental being refunded if a cancellation is made in writing more than two weeks before the arrival date.

Changeover Day:
Friday is our preferred changeover day.
We accept a minimum of a 3 night stay for Skylark Cottage and a minimum of a 2 night stay for Linnet Cottage.
Skylark Cottage:- arrival at 3pm/departure at 10am
Linnet Cottage:- arrival at 4pm/departure at 11am

Both properties are private with lovely gardens looking out to fields. All our guests remark on the peace and feeling of getting away from it all. You can lean over the fence and watch the herdwick sheep, feed lambs in summer or help collect eggs at tea time.
