About the property

Thornton Farm Cottages

Thornton Farm Cottages are perfect for a get-away-from-it-all holiday! There will always be fresh flowers, our own eggs and a pint of milk in the fridge ready for your arrival.

Everything is to a high standard, for example we believe in good quality beds and John Lewis bedlinen. All the bedrooms are comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated. We have fitted the kitchens with everything you need during your holiday, from coffee plungers to Alessi cutlery. Our cottages have a home from home feel and all our furnishings are to a high standard.

Thornton Farm is 5 miles south west from Berwick-upon-Tweed. It is an organic arable farm run by the Smales Family. Thornton is 50 miles from Edinburgh and 50 miles from Newcastle. It is a short drive from Norham Village with Norham Castle, a great pub and local shops.

We have space for securing your bikes so you can head out along some wonderful cycle routes. Cheswick Sands is 15 minutes by car and offers fabulous walks along some of the most deserted and beautiful coastline in Great Britain. We can offer guest passes to Paxton House where you can picnic by the River Tweed, visit the art gallery or walk along to the Chainbridge.

Guests are welcome to meet our miniature donkeys or help collect eggs. We like to leave you in peace and so everything is on offer, but never put upon guests. There are wonderful walks around the farm and guests love to bring their cameras for wildlife watching. For those with children we have a wonderful play park next to Skylark Cottage with wooden swings, see-saw, slide, climbing frame and willow playhouse. Perfect for little monkeys and den building.

About Laura Smales

My name is Laura and I work at Thornton Farm alongside my family. We are a small organic farm 5 miles outside Berwick-upon-Tweed. It is very much a family-run business, having lived here since 1948. I have 3 small children; a gorgeous greyhound; a chatty cocker spaniel; 3 miniature donkeys; 1 horse; 1 pony; herdwick sheep; ducks; hens and guinea fowl! We love walks along the beach, riding around the farm and making pancakes with Granny's eggs.

Why Laura Smales chose Northumberland

We are so lucky to live in such a peaceful place. You can see the stars at night, listen to birdsong and even catch a glimpse of deer grazing in the fields. Thornton is thriving with wildlife and it is so special for us to listen to the skylarks.

Berwick is perfect for visiting Edinburgh, beach walks, hill climbing and castle spotting. The roads are quiet and you don't have to worry about queuing anywhere. The landscape is open so from one side you can view the Cheviots and another the Berwickshire hills. We can offer guest passes to Paxton House grounds so you can picnic by the River Tweed and walk along to the Chainbridge. Guests always comment Thornton is in a lovely location as we are a distance from a main road, yet within 10 minutes from amenities.

What makes this cottage unique

Our holiday cottages are private with lovely gardens looking out to fields. All our guests remark on the peace and feeling of getting away from it all. You can lean over the fence and watch the herdwick sheep, feed lambs in summer or help collect eggs at tea time.

Lovely property . Well kept and clean.

  • 4 of 5

We had a very nice stay. Our only problem was stairs (we are quite elderly) and having the bathroom downstairs was difficult during the night. Other than that we had a very enjoyable stay. Laura was very welcoming and the added touches in the cottage all made to a very pleasant week.

Great little find!!!

  • 5 of 5

Laura is such a lovely person and makes you very welcome, the cottage was in a perfect isolated farm in the middle of nowhere so a great retreat to put your feet up. Some great things to do nearby and some lovely walks, the cottage itself had everything we needed and was very clean. Great stuff Laura, we hope to come back again one day. Chris
