About the property

Cerisy-la-Foret, nr Bayeux, Normandy,France - Tranquil location, surrounded by fields. Wake up to the chimes of the abbey bells and birdsong!

Our property name is Les Glycines, meaning Wysteria house. In the summer the front of our property is covered in beautiful purple flowers, with a heady scent!! The one bedroom gite which is attached to our home was converted in 2015, so still quite new!. Our property is over 300 years old, a mixture of brick, cob & stone. We have around 5000sq metres of land, and are not overlooked, except by the cows in a neighbouring field!

We're in a small village called Cerisy-la-Foret, which is known for its 11th century abbey and modern sculpture park. A 10 minute walk and you're at the monks pond opposite the abbey, very picturesque. A 5min drive in the other direction, and you're in the forest.

If it's a relaxing break for two you need, in a quiet setting, then look no further. However...we're not in the middle of nowhere! Bayeux and St Lo are close by, within a 25 minute drive. You have the best of both worlds!

Most people choose Normandy to explore everything they have heard about D-day. You won't be disappointed! We're ideal for visiting all the D-day landing beaches. Omaha is the nearest to us, 30 minutes away. There are plenty of military cemeteries and museums on our doorstep.

About Noreen Kadzionis

I seem to have inherited the travelling gene! Although I was born in England, I moved to Ireland in 2006. I had a change of career, and worked in retail in the tourist industry for 3 years.

Then I had an opportunity to visit France...

Noreen Kadzionis purchased this farmhouse in 2009

Why Noreen Kadzionis chose Coutances - Saint Lo area

As mentioned previously, I came over for a holiday, and fell in love with the country and the people! It wasn't my intention to live here, it just sort of happened...like a holiday romance!

Properties here were reasonably priced...so not really a difficult decision, and then of course there is the weather!

We're situated between Bayeux and St Lo, in a small village called Cerisy-la-Foret. The village is known for its 11th century abbey and modern sculpture park. It's quite a contrast ...but it works!

What makes this farmhouse unique

Although our property is set in a very peaceful location, at the end of a lane, surrounded by fields, it is just a 10 minute walk to the village. Our village has all the amenities you need for a self-catering holiday.

We're just 5 minutes away from the forest...ideal for picnics, walks and bike rides. You have use of two pushbikes free of charge.

We are in an ideal position for visiting all the D-day landing beaches, with Omaha being the nearest.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The owners could not have made us more welcome. The place is very peaceful and the gite is lovely and quiet, yet a perfect place to explore Normandy. Lovely place to de stress at the end of a busy day. Nice and comfy and offers all amenities needed. We would definitely return.

We had an excellent stay at this property and Noreen was there should any problem arise which was great. Mixed weather but we managed to barbecue 2 nights out of 6 which we enjoyed as we do at home. We would have liked opening windows in the bedroom as we did not want to leave the french doors open on an evening. Very comfortable with everything you need.Unfortunately the local boulangerie and charcuterie were closed for annual holidays but the cocci market came up trumps and we also bought some great wine from there. They even ordered some in specially for us to take home.An excellent week, thanks Noreen

Still amazing

  • 5 of 5

This was our second holiday at this beautiful gite! Yet again an amazing break (thank you Noreen!) We came for a peaceful and tranquil break which we totally got. We did the beaches and the crematories a couple of years ago which was a very emotional visit for us both . We stayed two years ago and would have stayed last year but to due to unforeseen circumstances were unable to. We would highly recommend the gite if you want a relaxing break (if you want nightlife and lots of bars it's not for you!). It was fab seeing Sem Sem and Claude again and I know Geoff really looked forward to seeing the cattle running around the field. We are now planning our third, fourth and fifth visit over the coming months and years. This is a place we really look forward to visiting time after time.

Comfortable Gîte at a quiet, relaxing property

  • 5 of 5

Selected this property for a one week stay in Normandy based on location and amenities. It is about 20-25 minutes to Bayeux or Saint-Lô by car. Booking was easy and on site owner Noreen very responsive.

The gîte is a converted farmhouse and has been renovated to a very nice comfortable standard. The place was spotlessly clean upon arrival and bottle of local cider was provided. The kitchen has all of the essentials including microwave, kettle, coffee maker, fridge with a small freezer compartment, etc.

A few highlights/essentials:

Parking--in a rural setting and parking is no problem.

Water-very adequate water pressure for shower and plenty of hot water too.

Internet: Wifi signal excellent in main room. Speed and stability supported streaming without any issues.

A/C: it is the proper type--the mini-split wall mounted system with a remote control. Almost silent and works quite well. One note--the unit is in the kitchen/sitting room so one must leave bedroom door open in order to cool that space, but it does work fine.

Bedroom: Good size with a wardrobe and plenty of clothes hangers. Towels were provided and changed out mid week. Bed was a double (a bit small compared to what I am used to at home) but otherwise comfortable.

Sitting area: comfortable couch, and TV with UK Freeview

Owner: Noreen is very warm and friendly. She was available to assist and chat without ever being intrusive. She assembled a very organised "instruction manual" for guests.

Bonus: Two marmalade cats Sem Sem and Claude were always on patrol outside. Very friendly!

I would recommend this gîte to anyone looking to stay in this part of Normandy. It is a good location for accessing D-Day beaches and sites.

lovely clean and tidy converted apartment

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely perfect for our purposes, very clean and well converted farmhouse apartment with all we needed for a perfect fortnight. The lovely Noreen(landlady) was the most welcoming and attentive host you will ever need. My wife is disabled and this property worked perfectly for her no steps, only a minor step into the shower with no hand rails, we fortunately brought our own shower stool with us so no dramas.

Absolutely stunning local farm vistas with young calves and bullocks wandering round the adjoining fields, Noreen's delightful cats and fantastic views of birds of prey socialising and hunting.

We had a very lazy holiday and spent most of our time in and around the gite. Good local shopping and an interesting area made our 2 weeks very memorable and the weather was amazing!

We may well return?

Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

Omaha beach is our nearest....30 minutes drive. No matter what time of year, it never gets crowded. It's a nice sandy beach, ideal for kids, and perfect for sunbathing or walking.

Utah beach is 1hrs drive.

Our co-ordinates are N49 deg 12.191

W 0 deg 55.873

Our nearest airport is Dinard in Brittany. It is 1hr 45mins drive. Car hire is available at the airport.

Our nearest port is Ouistreham(Caen) about 50 minutes drive, followed closely by Cherbourg, about 1hrs drive.

Both Bayeux and St Lo are only a 25 minute drive.

Bayeux is obviously famous for the tapestry and cathedral. It's a pretty town, which remains intact, despite the war! The Battle of Normandy Memorial museum is worth a visit, we think it's one of the best.

St Lo on the other hand was totally destroyed in the war. The cathedral still has a shell encased in the wall. There is a history trail leaflet which mentions all the strategic places, it's very moving.

Further Details:

Our village Cerisy-la-Foret, has everything you need. A baker, bank, butcher, chemist, hairdresser, post office, mini market, and of course a bar!

Most villages have a weekly market. Le Molay-Littry which is our nearest village has a market on a Thursday morning.

Both Bayeux and St Lo have a large market every Saturday morning. It's a great atmosphere.

Every weekend from March until October, there are brocantes (car boots) where there are plenty of bargains to be had. For those of you who have no choice but to go along, there is a consolation prize of a beer tent and fast food!

*Most shops close on a Monday, at least in the morning..as do Banks and post offices. Some villages have different days when the shops are closed.. it's frustrating, but it's just the way things are! Most shops close for lunch between 12.00 - 2pm, but there are always exceptions.

We're near enough for the nightlife of Bayeux & St Lo with all their restaurants, bars, bowling alleys and cinemas.

We can recommend a few!

There are lots of attractions in Normandy...

An adventure park, a cave, horse riding, 2 zoos....all nearby.

There are so many military cemeteries and museums to visit...

Arromanches...visit the 360 degree museum at the top of the hill. Look out over the remains of the Mulberry harbour. .a spectacular view.

Omaha....visit the American cemetery & museum. It's a place you won't forget.

Public gardens to visit like the botanic gardens at Bayeux or Coutances.

The small English tea gardens at Sallen, is a hidden gem. We think so anyway!

Visit the chateau at Balleroy just 10 mins drive away.

Further afield...

We are only an hour away from the port of Granville, not only a lovely place to visit, but you can hop on a ferry to Jersey, just for the day. .well worth seeing.

Mont St Michel is a major tourist attraction...it's like a fairytale castle. Get there early...it gets very busy!
