About the property

Cerisy-la-Foret, nr Bayeux, Normandy,France - Tranquil location, surrounded by fields. Wake up to the chimes of the abbey bells and birdsong!

Les Glycines, means Wysteria house, which in the summer is covered in beautiful purple flowers, with a heady scent!! The one bedroom gite which is attached was converted in 2015, so still quite new!. Previously the gite was two garages, storing cider barrels and bottles, sadly empty! The farmhouse is over 300 years old, a mixture of brick, cob & stone, and is not overlooked, except by the cows in a neighbouring field! You'll feel as if you're miles from anywhere, as there is 5000sq metres of land, plenty of green space, the cats enjoy it!

Les Glycines is situated in a small village called Cerisy-la-Foret, which is known for its 11th century abbey and modern sculpture park. A 10 minute walk and you're at the monks pond opposite the abbey, very picturesque. 5 mins drive in the other direction, and you're in the forest.

If it's a relaxing break for two you need, in a quiet setting, then look no further. not in the middle of nowhere! Bayeux and St Lo are close by, within a 25 minute drive. You have the best of both worlds!

Most people choose Normandy to explore everything they have heard about D-day. You won't be disappointed! Ideally situated for visiting all the D-day landing beaches with Omaha being the nearest, only 30 minutes away. There are plenty of military cemeteries and museums nearby.

About Noreen Kadzionis

I seem to have inherited the travelling gene! Although I was born in England, I moved to Ireland in 2006. I had a change of career, and worked in retail in the tourist industry for 3 years.

Then I had an opportunity to visit for a holiday!

Noreen Kadzionis purchased this farmhouse in 2009

Why Noreen Kadzionis chose Cerisy-la-Forêt

As mentioned previously, I came over for a holiday, and fell in love with the country and the people! It wasn't my intention to live here, it just sort of happened, a holiday romance!

Properties here were reasonably priced, so not really a difficult decision, and then of course there is the weather!

Les Glycines is situated between Bayeux and St Lo, in a small village called Cerisy-la-Foret. The village is known for its 11th century abbey and modern sculpture park. It's quite a contrast, but it works!

What makes this farmhouse unique

Although Les Glycines is set in a very peaceful location, at the end of a lane, surrounded by fields, it is just a 10 minute walk to the village. The village has all the amenities you need for a self-catering holiday.

Les Glycines is just a 5 minutes drive away from the forest, ideal for picnics, walks and bike rides. You have use of two push bikes free of charge.

Les Glycines is in an ideal position for visiting all the D-day landing beaches, with Omaha being the nearest.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The owners could not have made us more welcome. The place is very peaceful and the gite is lovely and quiet, yet a perfect place to explore Normandy. Lovely place to de stress at the end of a busy day. Nice and comfy and offers all amenities needed. We would definitely return.

Notes on accommodation: Sorry no pets allowed, as I have two very territorial cats! The cats are *TRAINED not to go in the gite, as I like to keep this a cat free zone. Also, please do not feed them no matter how much they beg! *All training goes out of the window, when I'm not around! ** My cats act as guard dogs, they sit in the drive...please take care when driving up to the property! Outside: Les Glycines is situated at the end of a lane, the very last house. It's not overlooked, no one will pass by...except me of course! The outlook is of fields...with cows grazing at the front of the gite.. and the sounds are of bells and birdsong! At the rear of the gite, is an area solely for guests use. A table and chairs, parasol, and sun loungers are provided...It's south facing so ideal for relaxing in the sunshine, and having a barbecue. All private...

Just perfect!

Noreeen was the ideal 'there but not there' hostess. She was always ready to advise or help, without being in any way obtrusive. The accommodation was very comfortable, clean and well-equipped. Consequently we greatly enjoyed our stay.

Easter weekend in Cerisy-la-Forêt

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent the Easter weekend and although the weather was poor we still had a wonderful time. Noreen is an excellent host and was always available when needed, providing advice and guidance on the local area as well as answering any questions we had about the Gite.

For those who want to spend time enjoying this area and want a comfortable intimate Gite for 2 then you can't go far wrong.

Will definitely recommend to friends and family!

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We were met at this very comfortable "home from home" gite by the English owner, who was so welcoming and eager to make our stay pleasurable.

The setting is rural and the village is in a lovely area with plenty to see, good areas to walk and handy for the tourist areas of interest.

We loved our stay here and would definitely return and recommend it.

Thank you Noreen for a wonderful stay.

We had an excellent stay at this property and Noreen was there should any problem arise which was great. Mixed weather but we managed to barbecue 2 nights out of 6 which we enjoyed as we do at home. We would have liked opening windows in the bedroom as we did not want to leave the french doors open on an evening. Very comfortable with everything you need.Unfortunately the local boulangerie and charcuterie were closed for annual holidays but the cocci market came up trumps and we also bought some great wine from there. They even ordered some in specially for us to take home.An excellent week, thanks Noreen

Still amazing

  • 5 of 5

This was our second holiday at this beautiful gite! Yet again an amazing break (thank you Noreen!) We came for a peaceful and tranquil break which we totally got. We did the beaches and the crematories a couple of years ago which was a very emotional visit for us both . We stayed two years ago and would have stayed last year but to due to unforeseen circumstances were unable to. We would highly recommend the gite if you want a relaxing break (if you want nightlife and lots of bars it's not for you!). It was fab seeing Sem Sem and Claude again and I know Geoff really looked forward to seeing the cattle running around the field. We are now planning our third, fourth and fifth visit over the coming months and years. This is a place we really look forward to visiting time after time.

Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

Omaha beach is our nearest....30 minutes drive. No matter what time of year, it never gets crowded. It's a nice sandy beach, ideal for kids, and perfect for sunbathing or walking.

Utah beach is 1hrs drive.

Our co-ordinates are N49 deg 12.191

W 0 deg 55.873

Our nearest airport is Dinard in Brittany. It is 1hr 45mins drive. Car hire is available at the airport.

Our nearest port is Ouistreham(Caen) about 50 minutes drive, followed closely by Cherbourg, about 1hrs drive.

Both Bayeux and St Lo are only a 25 minute drive.

Bayeux is obviously famous for the tapestry and cathedral. It's a pretty town, which remains intact, despite the war! The Battle of Normandy Memorial museum is worth a visit, I think it's one of the best.

St Lo on the other hand was totally destroyed in the war. The cathedral still has a shell encased in the wall. There is a history trail leaflet which mentions all the strategic places, it's very moving.

Further Details:

Cerisy-la-Foret, has everything you need. A bakery, butchers, chemist, mini-market, *hairdressers and a bar/newsagents.

*My hairdresser does do a home service, so it may be possible for an appt, depending on availability.

Most villages have a weekly market. Le Molay-Littry which is the nearest village has a market on a Thursday morning...only a 10minute drive!

Both Bayeux and St Lo have a large market every Saturday morning. It's a great atmosphere.

Every weekend from March until October, there are brocantes (car boots) where there are plenty of bargains to be had. For those of you who have no choice but to go along, there is a consolation prize of a beer tent and fast food!

*Most shops close on a Monday, at least in the do banks and post offices. Some villages have different days when the shops are closed.. it's frustrating, but it's just the way things are! Most shops close for lunch between 12.00 - 2pm, but there are always exceptions.

Les Glycines is near enough for the nightlife of Bayeux & St Lo with all their restaurants, bars, bowling alleys and cinemas.

I can recommend a few!

There are lots of attractions in Normandy...

An adventure park, a cave, horse riding, 2 zoos....all nearby.

There are so many military cemeteries and museums to visit...

Arromanches...visit the 360 degree museum at the top of the hill. Look out over the remains of the Mulberry harbour. .a spectacular view.

Omaha....visit the American cemetery & museum. It's a place you won't forget.

Public gardens to visit like the botanical gardens in Bayeux and Coutances.

Visit the chateau at Balleroy, less than a 10 mins drive away!

Further afield...

The port of Granville is only an hour away, not only a lovely place to visit, but you can hop on a ferry to Jersey, just for the day. .well worth seeing.

Mont St Michel is a major tourist's like a fairytale castle. Get there gets very busy!

Honfleur is a pretty place to visit with it's harbour and artisan shops. Steeped in history...only an hour's drive!
