Perfect hideaway in a rural setting, yet only a 10 minute walk to the village.

Overview

Property

Updated: 08-Sep-2016
Cerisy-la-Foret, nr Bayeux, Normandy,France - Tranquil location, surrounded by fields. Wake up to the chimes of the abbey bells and birdsong!

Les Glycines is the name of our newly converted one bedroom gite, which is attached to our home. Our property is over 300 years old, a mixture of brick, cob & stone. We have around 5000sq metres of land, and are not overlooked, except by the cows in a neighbouring field!

We're in a small village called Cerisy-la-Foret, which is known for its 11th century abbey and modern sculpture park. A 10 minute walk and you're at the monks pond opposite the abbey, very picturesque. A 5min drive in the other direction, and you're in the forest.

If it's a relaxing break for two you need, in a quiet setting, then look no further. However...we're not in the middle of nowhere! Bayeux and St Lo are close by, within a 25 minute drive. You have the best of both worlds!

Most people choose Normandy to explore everything they have heard about D-day. You won't be disappointed! We're ideal for visiting all the D-day landing beaches. Omaha is the nearest to us, 30 minutes away. There are plenty of military cemeteries and museums on our doorstep.

About the Owner

Although we're both from England, we actually met in Ireland 7 years ago. I was working in retail, in a tourist shop and my partner Richard had retired.

We ended up travelling and decided we'd stay in France. We bought an old property, which needed renovating......so, Richard came out of retirement!!

The owners could not have made us more welcome. The place is very peaceful and the gite is lovely and quiet, yet a perfect place to explore Normandy. Lovely place to de stress at the end of a busy day. Nice and comfy and offers all amenities needed. We would definitely return.

lovely clean and tidy converted apartment

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely perfect for our purposes, very clean and well converted farmhouse apartment with all we needed for a perfect fortnight. The lovely Noreen(landlady) was the most welcoming and attentive host you will ever need. My wife is disabled and this property worked perfectly for her no steps, only a minor step into the shower with no hand rails, we fortunately brought our own shower stool with us so no dramas.

Absolutely stunning local farm vistas with young calves and bullocks wandering round the adjoining fields, Noreen's delightful cats and fantastic views of birds of prey socialising and hunting.

We had a very lazy holiday and spent most of our time in and around the gite. Good local shopping and an interesting area made our 2 weeks very memorable and the weather was amazing!

We may well return?

Perfect hideaway in a beautiful part of Normandy

  • 5 of 5

We received a warm welcome to this lovely little cottage in Cerisy la foret

Les Glycines is situated in a picturesque village with an ancient abbey and interesting sculpture park.

The property was spotlessly clean & nothing was too much trouble for our kind, helpful owner.

It was a great place from which to explore all areas of Normandy.

We had a lovely holiday & hope to return.

Just perfect (again)

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit (this time to see the Tour de France), the gite was still as perfect, the hosts even more so and the area still as beautiful. We had a relaxing week but there is so much do see and do in this corner of France that we will be back! Everything you could possibly want from a holiday. We were fortunate that we had absolutely lovely weather as well! Thank you so much Noreen for a wonderful time.

Perfect relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

We had read previous reviews and thought could the gite be as good as it sounds? We'll let us put your minds to rest. This was our first solo holiday for 19 years and what a fantastic time we had. The gite was spacious, clean and very well equipped and the owners, Noreen and Richard were very welcoming and friendly. Unfortunately we did not realise it was a public holiday in France when we arrived so we only had some very basic essentials with us, mainly water and a few cheese biscuits! The owners did e-mail us to let us know but we did not pick up the e-mail! Noreen and Richard came to our rescue (thank you). We had a lovely evening meal of fresh baked bread, pate, olives washed down with some lovely Normandy cidre. The surrounding area was lovely. Sitting in the private garden with patio chairs and sun loungers was very relaxing. We had cows in two adjoining fields which always made us laugh in the mornings with their antics . The owners could not have been more helpful giving us tips on the surrounding area. We made trips to the Normandy beaches and the many cemeteries around. The American/Canadaian was the most immaculate one we saw. The village itself had a Boulangerei, bar and butchers which was a 10 minute walk from the property. We decided to go to the next village which had a couple of small supermarkets which gave us everything we needed. The cats - sem sem and Claude were very entertaining too (Don't worry they were friendly). They never attempted to come into the gite which was a cat feee zone. We would definitely recommend (please don't expect exciting nightlife. We came for a well deserved relaxing break) and if like us you want relaxation and a peaceful week or two and a total break please look no further. We will be hooking for next year very soon - might even book two separate breaks ! Thank you once again Noreen and Richard. Best wishes Claire and Geoff, Kent, England

Charming gite, lovely setting, perfect holiday

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing Gite in a superb location - simply but tastefully furnished to a very high standard, extremely comfortable with everything we needed, including WIFI and English television, and spotlessly clean – we even had fresh flowers from the garden each week, and a welcome hamper with nice goodies to eat. It is set in a charming little village, at the end of a lane - so beautifully quiet, all we could hear were birdsong and the occasional chime of the Abbey (not loud). The owners are very friendly and helpful without being intrusive, and happy to help when asked. The location is excellent - less than half an hour to the Normandy landing beaches and Bayeaux, 10 minutes from the motorway to travel further afield, in a lovely little village with a bar, shop, butchers and an excellent bakers, and further lovely little villages within a short drive. Outside there is lots of space to laze and sunbathe in the beautiful gardens, plus a barbeque and space for outside meals. We had an amazing two weeks, which absolutely flew by. Thank you, Richard and Noreen.

Location

From the Owner

We originally came over to Normandy in 2007 to meet up with friends, decided we'd like to rent a gite for our next summer holiday, and then ended up finding a property. It wasn't our intention to live here, it just sort of happened! We're situated between Bayeux and St Lo, in a small village called Cerisy-la-Foret. The village is known for its 11th century abbey and modern sculpture park. It's quite a contrast ...but it works!

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

n/a

Coast/Beach:

Omaha beach is our nearest....30 minutes drive. No matter what time of year, it never gets crowded. It's a nice sandy beach, ideal for kids, and perfect for sunbathing or walking.

Utah beach is 1hrs drive.

Travel:

Our co-ordinates are N49 deg 12.191

W 0 deg 55.873

Our nearest airport is Dinard in Brittany. It is 1hr 45mins drive. Car hire is available at the airport.

Our nearest port is Ouistreham(Caen) about 50 minutes drive, followed closely by Cherbourg, about 1hrs drive.

Distances:

Both Bayeux and St Lo are only a 25 minute drive.

Bayeux is obviously famous for the tapestry and cathedral. It's a pretty town, which remains intact, despite the war! The Battle of Normandy Memorial museum is worth a visit, we think it's one of the best.

St Lo on the other hand was totally destroyed in the war. The cathedral still has a shell encased in the wall. There is a history trail leaflet which mentions all the strategic places, it's very moving.

Further Details:

Our village Cerisy-la-Foret, has everything you need. A baker, bank, butcher, chemist, hairdresser, post office, mini market, and of course a bar!

Most villages have a weekly market. Le Molay-Littry which is our nearest village has a market on a Thursday morning.

Both Bayeux and St Lo have a large market every Saturday morning. It's a great atmosphere.

Every weekend from March until October, there are brocantes (car boots) where there are plenty of bargains to be had. For those of you who have no choice but to go along, there is a consolation prize of a beer tent and fast food!

*Most shops close on a Monday, at least in the morning..as do Banks and post offices. Some villages have different days when the shops are closed.. it's frustrating, but it's just the way things are! Most shops close for lunch between 12.00 - 2pm, but there are always exceptions.

We're near enough for the nightlife of Bayeux & St Lo with all their restaurants, bars, bowling alleys and cinemas.

We can recommend a few!

There are lots of attractions in Normandy...

CHILDREN

An adventure park, a cave, horse riding, 2 zoos....all nearby.

D-day

There are so many military cemeteries and museums to visit...

Arromanches...visit the 360 degree museum at the top of the hill. Look out over the remains of the Mulberry harbour. .a spectacular view.

Omaha....visit the American cemetery & museum. It's a place you won't forget.

GARDENS

Public gardens to visit like the botanic gardens at Bayeux or Coutances.

The small English tea gardens at Sallen, is a hidden gem. We think so anyway!

CHATEAU

Visit the chateau at Balleroy just 10 mins drive away.

Further afield...

We are only an hour away from the port of Granville, not only a lovely place to visit, but you can hop on a ferry to Jersey, just for the day. .well worth seeing.

Mont St Michel is a major tourist attraction...it's like a fairytale castle. Get there early...it gets very busy!
