About Louise Hudson

We are Louise and Simon Hudson - I'm a travel writer and he's a Professor of Tourism, researcher and author. We're both British but currently live in South Carolina. Having travelled the world as beach-seekers, we decided that Portugal had the best combination of gorgeous unspoilt beaches, laidback lifestyle, great food, affordable prices and very friendly people. We bought our villa in Feb 2015 after visiting Praia da Luz a few years ago on a house-hunting mission. We already had several groups of friends with properties there, so we knew it was going to be the right location for us. We have 2 grown sons, one working in the USA, the other at university in Canada and they both love spending family vacations at the villa. Although it was already a charming and comfortable villa when we bought it, we spent two months re-painting and re-furnishing it to make sure it has every facility for the perfect villa holiday. Every time we visit we make extra finishing touches to give it a light, airy, cheerful and comfortable vibe.

Why Louise Hudson chose Lagos region

As travel writers and researchers, we have spent the past 30 years wandering the globe in search of perfection. We love laid-back, unspoilt areas with dramatic scenery but with a modicum of infrastructure for creature comforts. After summers working in the Med in our youth, we're inveterate beach bums and love the sand and seas of Praia da Luz and the nearby fishing villages and unspoilt beaches. Having lived for 6 years in South Carolina, we're also keen golfers (check out our book "Golf Tourism", published by Goodfellow), so we particularly like the topnotch golf courses in the area including Boa Vista and the fabulous new eco-golf resort at Espiche. The rugged terrain and cliff paths around Luz are perfect for hiking and mountain biking - newer passions of ours with which we work off all that great food and wine in the many restaurants around town, on the beaches and in the rugged rural hinterland.

What makes this villa unique

All the benefits of being near the beach and town but with a very quiet location for a great night's sleep even in high season. Our villa is set on the hillside on the edge of town, bordered by dramatic cliffs to our left, giving great views over Lagos and Monchique. Because we are set on the hill above town, we have wonderful panoramic sea views, too - so uplifting and peaceful while eating breakfast or sipping sunset drinks on the terrace. Walking into town is a huge pleasure as our district is full of older, unique villas with gracious gardens, walls burgeoning with colourful flowers and vines, huge palm trees and immense foliage. It is lovely to wander down the winding streets - so different from the newer parts of town with their "cookie cutter" properties, all the same, set in straight lines. Staying in our villa will make you feel like you live like a local in Praia da Luz and make you want to come back again and again!

Newly re-Stuccoed and re-painted exterior, refurbished inside, really pretty villa in lovely quiet residential area with lots of different neighbouring villas, interesting rooftops, lovely flowers and curved streets winding down to seafront. Children's play park around the corner. Hotel Bela Vista gym nearby. Outside: Private 8metre x 4metre pool set in pretty mature garden with bougainvillea trailing up the outside stairs to panoramic patio. Plentiful sunloungers and seating around pool as well as dining sets on the terrace above. Spectacular panoramic views from terrace (off lounge and dining areas) including cliffs, bay, and town below as well as Lagos and Monchique in the distance from one corner of the terrace. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, linens and maid service included. Maid service three times per week, linen changed twice per week. We have a cot for a baby and also a highchair.

Beautiful - didn't want to leave

Just wanted to Thank you for allowing us to rent your villa. It was the most amazing week and none of us were ready to come home.

The area is beautiful, people are friendly and such fantastic views from the villa.

We will definitely be back, probably not next year, but the year after.

Clara is a credit to you, so helpful and we met her out and about a few times and she always made sure we were ok.

Met the lovely Norman and his wife maintaining next door and became our taxi for the rest of the week 😀. That sorted the hill 😂😂. Once again thank you

Hillside haven in the sun

Two families of 4 arrived at this lovely villa on the 16th July. With spacious bedrooms and 4 bathrooms it never felt crowded. It felt instantly comfortable and the welcome pack kept us contented enough before hitting the shops. It is a lovely walk from the Villa into Luz (a bit of a puff heading back) but at least an opportunity to walk off some of the amazing food available in the restaurants. The Dolphin and A Fabrica probably the pick of the bunch.

The villa is well appointed. Plenty of seating and always with amazing views.

All as described in the blurb and the maid service was very useful. There was a slight problem with the pool initially but Luis the pool maintenance man responded promptly and it was soon sorted. Highly recommend this Villa and Louise was great in communication and providing information.

Fabulous find!

We have just come back from 2 weeks in this charming villa. Everything was exactly as Louise had described it on the website and the photos were very realistic.

We loved the area, especially the beaches and restaurants. But we also did lots of cycling, walking, tennis and golf, all very nearby.

Louise gave us good directions and lots of useful information about where to go.

The villa was very well equpiped and comfortable and we are definitely going to book again next year!

Just Perfect!

This was the 2nd time I've stayed at the property - once with family and this time with a small group of friends. It is perfect for exactly what we wanted which was a relaxing week in the sunshine. The villa has everything you need and is only a cheap taxi away from the main area of Lagos and walking distance from the beach in Luz. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to enjoy Portugal in a traditional setting.

Will be returning again soon!

Spacious and gorgeous

The villa is perfect for a group. Four good sized bedrooms, 2 with patio doors opening to the poolside and 3 have ensuite bathrooms.

Lots of eating space and sofa space for relaxing. Lovely balcony with stunning sea and hill views!

The kitchen is well equipped and has everything you need. The villa is cleaned and fresh towels left mid week. Pool towels are also provided which is very useful.

The villa is about a 15-20 minute walk to the beach at a steady pace but be warned, the incline is rather steep!

Lovely stay. Beautiful villa which is reasonably priced. Highly recommended

Home from Home Experience - And a LOT More!

We stayed at this property in August 2015 and boy did we have an amazing time. The property is situated right at the top of the hill in Pria Da Luz and offers great views of the nearby sea and cliffs.

The dining room has an extendable table to cater for up to 10 people.

Views from the balcony are pretty, calming and serene. Balcony is equipped with a clever piece of foldable furniture which extends to seat up to 8 people and can be folded back into a cube! We had breakfast on the balcony each morning and it was an amazing experience!

The property itself has more mod cons than we expected. There is a smart TV with set top boxes and satellite connections which offer you plenty of entertainment options after dark. The Wifi offers pretty good speed and connectivity.

There is a detailed information booklet upstairs to let you know about the property, its surroundings, the local area, its attractions, restaurants, bars pubs and so on. It is definitely worth a read as it offers some valuable information.

The beach is about 15 minutes walk or 5 minutes drive away. There is a Spar supermarket on way to the beach. We did most of our shopping at Spar, it was reasonably priced and convenient. a couple of minutes' walk from Spar are the local businesses and restaurants etc. There is a lot of activity around the beach area. There is a car/motorbike rental place near the beach which also offers airport transfers.

Now the most important bit... The owners and the property managers!

Louise, the owner of this property is certainly the most considerate and contientious I've ever come across. We were contacted prior to our arrival with detailed turn-by-turn instructions to get to the property from Faro airport. The owner also gave us the option to have food essentials (bread, milk, eggs etc.) available on our arrival. On departure day we were given additional time (5 added hours at no extra cost) to leave for our 7pm flight.

Our deposit was rturned promptly.

On departure I mistakenly left about £250 in foreign currency at the property. I notified Louise who very kindly got in touch with Clara, the estate manager who went to the property with maids to search for the money and on finding it, sent it back to me at once.

We are just so smitten by our overall experience we are already talking about going back there next summer.

Location

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

Nearest beach is Praia da Luz, 10-15 mins walk depending on route, with a wide curved bay, promenade with beach cafes & shops, sand, gentle waters featuring every watersport, & rugged cliff backdrop. Just the other side of the 16th century Fortaleza (now a good oceanfront restaurant) is a quieter locals' beach (Praia Prahina) with soft sand & comfortable flat sunbathing rocks. The wilder west coast is 20 mins drive to unspoilt sandy swathes, surfing seas, majestic cliffs & pristine National Park scenery.

Travel:

Faro airport:50 mins drive. Train Faro to Lagos (10 mins from Luz) cheap, takes 1½ hours. Airport taxi transfers cost 70 euros each way with YellowFish. Car hire recommended (or at least bikes) as there is so much to see and do in and around Praia da Luz and Lagos. But you can also take taxis around town and get buses to nearby attractions. And, if you don't want driving to spoil your relaxation, there's lots to do right in town and on the beach.

Distances:

Barao de Sao Joao, about 5 mins drive, must-see artsy town with Taberna d'Maria for music & munchies. Lagos 10 mins drive. Lots of cute fishing villages & beaches within 25 min drive inc Sagres, Zavial. Local buses to Lagos & quaint villages of Burgau (sunset bar, beach bar and lovely beach) & Salema (beach bars and unspoilt beach). Cape Vincente, most Southwesterly point of Europe is 30 mins drive. And Monchique, 1hr drive, highest point in SW Europe. Lisbon & Seville, Spain - 2 hrs 42 mins drive. The wild west coast is about 40 min drive - Amado Beach for surfing and great restaurant set on the cliffs above.

Further Details:

As you drive into Praia da Luz, you fall in love with this delightful hillside town overlooking the expansive, curved bay. With only low and medium-rise development, it has just the right amount of infrastructure for a great holiday and relaxed lifestyle. Everywhere around town and the beach is walkable or bike-able. There's a handy central supermarket (Baptista - 10 min walk and they deliver to your doorstep) as well as lots of big ones (in Lagos - Intermarche, Lidl, Aldi, etc) 10 mins drive from our villa. Built around a charming church, the town is full of character, with lots of quaint eateries including Fortaleza, an ancient fort repurposed as a fine dining restaurant with antique interior and oceanfront patios. The boardwalk is lined with pavement cafes and there's a couple of pubs for British beer and football. O Camilo, 10 min drive away, is a topnotch, modern restaurant perched on a clifftop overlooking Lagos. Algarve food in general is diverse, ranging from local seafood to Portuguese pork and beef, with reasonable prices. Sensational sunset drinks in Burgau are inexpensive. As well as typical sun, sea and sand activities, there are lots of sports available, outdoors or at the fitness centre in the Hotel Bela Vista or pilates, zumba and aerobics classes around town. There are plentiful biking paths linking to coastal and rural villages - all quaint and cheap for food and drinks. The whole area is very pretty with lots of greenery, immense cliffs, white sandy beaches sometimes with calm turquoise seas, sometimes with dramatic surf.
