About the Owner

We live near the village of Beauly. My Husband and I are local to the area, John is a retired Electrical Engineer. We are still very active and enjoy meeting new people, especially welcoming them to the Highlands for the first time, second and third. We had no idea we would enjoy this time in our lives so much, the most rewarding thing for us is knowing that Rowan Cottage has been such a delight to so many guests, we were not prepared for how many new friends we would meet along the way - it really has been a joy for us.

This is our first trip to the Highlands and we feel so fortunate to have found Rowan Cottage. This really is a very special place to stay - so much more than just a base from which to explore. Thank you Mairi and John for the warm welcome and for all the thoughtful extras including the fabulous welcome pack (we really enjoyed our daily slice of home-made fruit cake). You seem to have thought of everything. For future guests we can only echo what others have written : stock up the bird table - you will be delighted! We would love to come back again.

Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to stay in such a lovely, comfortable cottage. The scenery is magnificent. Your hospitality was second to none. Thank you for the lovely fruit cake. For other guests a visit to Glen Affric is well worth the effort. We hope to return to Rowan Cottage one day.

Our 4th visit (it would be rude not to make it 5 at some point in the future). A great way to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary. We love to do all the same old familiar things but always manage to find one or two new experiences. As bike riders and walkers we are in OS heaven. For some reason we always seem to avoid rain in Scotland and have been lucky with the weather. Many thanks again for your kindness and warm welcome, we feel we are coming home when we reach Rowan Cottage.

A Hidden Gem!

  • 5 of 5

An amazing view and so quiet and peaceful. We watched the birds from the conservatory and were visited most nights by a pinemarten who came for his/her marmalade snadwiches! We also had visits from badgers (3 together once)! The welcome basket and home-made cake were amazing and the really thoughtful little 'extras' that made our stay so special - thank you Mairi Mae. Enjoyed visits to Culloden Battle Fields, Plodda Falls & Fort Augustus and the drive around Loch Ness gave us some truly amazing scenery. We also had two excellent meals at the Loch Ness Inn, near Drumnadrochit. A really wonderful week - the property was immaculately clean and had everything you could ever need to make your stay perfect. Mairi Mae was the perfect host. Would definitely return!

Fantastic cottage and location

  • 5 of 5

We has the most amazing time staying at this beautiful cottage. The location is great and the views are stunning, particularly over Lock Ness. I believe the images of this property do not do it justice. The owners are very helpful, warm and friendly. We will be returning.

Hidden Gem Tucked Away on the Hills of Loch Ness

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Scotland (from the US - North Carolina), and we had done a lot of research into our accommodations for our two week stay. Rowan Cottage had all of the comforts and accommodations that we were looking for, and then some. Mairi made us feel SO welcome, and the welcome basket made it feel a bit like Christmas! The cottage has a stunning view of Loch Ness, it is as beautiful on a clear night as it is during the day (you can clearly see Mars and Venus above the Loch at night).

We felt right at home during our stay; this cottage served extremely well as a "home-base"of sorts… there are plenty of things to see and do near Loch Ness, but just about everywhere else we wanted to go (from John O'Groats to Edinburgh) is only about a 3 hour drive away. It was a very good feeling to have Rowan cottage to come back to after a long day of adventuring.

Its proximity to Inverness is also quite nice, it's only a quick 15 minute ride away. Yet it is far enough away from the hustle and bustle to help you kick back, relax, and just enjoy your time in Scotland!

When we come back to Scotland, we will definitely look to spend our time at Rowan cottage. Mairi went above and beyond for us, on a couple separate occasions… I just know that the kind of hospitality she extends to her visitors is something unlike anything I've experienced anywhere (except my own mum, of course).

If you're reading this, and are considering staying in this cottage, look no further. This place has everything you could want for a holiday home, and more.

Delightful crofter's cottage

  • 5 of 5

This unspoiled and delightful crofter's cottage has been our perfect getaway for 8 years now. It is situated along a secluded road but perfectly located for a short drive to enjoy Inverness and as a base to explore all the attractions and scenery along Loch Ness and the mountains whether you prefer to be a tourist or a hiker. Not only is the cottage equipped to the highest standard but the owners have set the highest standard of 'welcome' pack that we have ever come across. And even ask what sort of cake you would prefer in it!! The local wildlife that may be viewed in the garden is truly amazing - we have seen pine martens, badgers and woodpeckers. When you arrive be sure to read the visitors' book to catch up on what's been happening outside. We'll be back for a 9th year.

An outstanding cottage with magnificent views

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful place to stay, the best we have ever been to. The cottage is tastefully furnished, very comfortable and warm with everything you could ever need provided. The welcome pack was awesome! The home made cake was superb and didn't last long! We had a very peaceful, relaxing stay and I was in wildlife heaven; saw my first (live) badger (albeit at 1.30am by torchlight) and the pine martin came several times and was wonderful to see. We also went to Loch Garten to see the ospreys and crested tit, the dolphins at Rosemarkie and seals near John O' Groats.

I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough and we will definitely be coming back.

Location

From the Owner

The minute we found Rowan we knew it was the most Idyllic spot for our guests to enjoy tranquility and peace but not to be too far away from all the attractions in the Highlands - so many right on the doorstep. Location is every thing and Rowan has Location!

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

We have beaches within 30 minutes drive of the cottage. The Black Isle has Fortrose and Rosemarkie with Cromarty another 12 miles beyond and worth a visit. Also Nairn which you can drive to easily in 30 minutes. Dolphins can often be seen from our sea shore. Many others beaches besides if you don't mind a longer drive - Dornoch for instance.

Travel:

Dalcross Airport is about 25 minutes away by car and easy to get to. Also a railway station in Inverness.

Distances:

Inverness is 8 miles from the cottage and the village of Drumnadrochit around 6. Within the rural area of Abriachan there is a good community hall with events happening throughout the year, visitors are always welcome. The famous Battlefield of Culloden is close to Inverness with it's award winning Visitor Centre. Urquhart Castle and Visitor Centre is just a couple of miles along the loch side.

Further Details:

There are many good eating establishment in Inverness also in Drumnadrochit. There is a superb restaurant at the Clansman hotel which is just below the cottage on the loch side, it is possible to take the path near the cottage to it, in the past the owners have provided transport home for our guests free of charge. We are happy to advise on eating out - our passion. There are many attractions around the area, activities as well as sedate outings, you will find plenty of leaflets and tourist guides within the cottage. Many supermarkets in Inverness also provisions may be bought at Drumnadrochit.

Facilities

From the Owner

Rowan is a traditional Highland Cottage and a little over 100 years old. Apart from the Idyllic location, it offers a comfort and welcome that puts our guest at ease straight away. We have many added extras available to guests, including a generous welcome basket on arrival. Many of our guests say they don't want to leave. Our Visitors Book is testament to the many charms and benefits that Rowan has to offer and we are pleased to say many of our guests return year after year. The conservatory particularly is enjoyed by our guest who simply like to sit and watch the bird life around the garden, read a book or gently snooze in the very comfortable chairs. At the end of the day this is often where our guests sit to eat and enjoy a relaxing refreshment like a glass of wine. In the cooler weather our guests enjoy the fireside which soon makes the living room a very snug place to curl up.
