House in Saint Etienne des Oullieres, Nr. Lyon, Rhone-Alpes, France - 2 Minutes Walk To The Centre Of The Village

Le Tilleul with it's entrance amidst the honeysuckle was built in the 1800’s in the style typical of the Beaujolais region, with a staircase up to the living area. The entrance leads into a very spacious, tiled, open plan living, dining and kitchen area. South facing, the sun streams through large windows for most of the day. The private and protected garden and gravel courtyard seem to benefit from their own micro climate. You will find a full set of garden furniture and barbecue for your eating al fresco, and sun loungers for relaxing in the sunshine next to the pool. Children are very welcome at Le Tilleul, and the property is equipped with high chair, travel cot, and indoor toy box! There are inflatable's for the water and a range of outdoor toys. The village of St Etienne des Oullières, (2 minutes walk from the property) with its wine cellar and small village shops, is situated in the heart of the Beaujolais region within easy reach of the Unesco classified city of Lyon to the South and Maçon to the North.

Perfect propert in a perfect tranquil setting

Le Tilleuil was even better than we expected, the pictures don't do it justice! A beautiful light apartment with a big pool in a stunning garden. The owners were warm and friendly and we got the impression that nothing was too much trouble. The apartment is really well equipped, immaculately clean and the fluffy towels were a great bonus - allowing us extra space in our luggage to take back local delicacies! Speaking of which, we recommend Huilerie Beaujolaise in nearby Beujeu - a local workshop making their own oils and vinegar in a multitude of amazing flavours (we came back with pistachio, pecan, porcini and hazlenut and quince and blueberry vinegar).

There is plenty to do in the Beaujolais area, we are regular visitors- Parc de Tete d'or in Lyon and Clochemerle are favourites of ours. This time, thanks to the well put together local information pack, we also discovered the aquatic gardens in St Didier and Lac des Sapins, both of which were beautiful.

Le Tilleuil is also the perfect place to spend a lazy day in the sun (and in the pool with the large inflatables provided!) and maybe a stroll by all the nearby vineyards.

The information pack states that the wifi is limited to certain areas of the house but we didn't find this to be the case and we had good strong wifi in all parts of the property and garden.

All we look for in our holiday accommodation

We have stayed in many gites but cost wise Le Tilleuil has everything we look for in our holiday accommodation,on this occasion our stay was for two months.Many gites we have experienced are in older "character" buildings which are often dark and after a while become claustrophobic.The beauty of Le Tilleuil is the large windows and high ceilings which give the impression of light space and an open ambience.The clean and well equipped kitchen,the excellent laundry and store room,the comfort of the furnishing and bedroom made our long stay an absolute delight.Le Tilleuil is positioned less than a 5 minute walk to the centre of the village,with it's excellent bakery,butcher,bank,pharmacy,and small supermarket,plus a doctor and other shops which offer everything one may need without looking to the larger supermarkets and facilities in Belleville.We stayed 2 months in the autumn,such was the comfort,warmth and convenience that a much longer stay would have been a continued pleasure..Whilst the comfort and facilities of Le Tilleuil cannot be over emphasized,the greatest delight was in the genuine sincerity and helpfulness of Joanne,Bruno and their family,the owners who live adjacent to the gite.They were the perfect but unobtrusive hosts,who were always there when help was needed.Yes we definitely will be returning to this charming couple in a beautiful unspoiled area of France.John and Pauline Holmes

Family holiday 2015

We had a thoroughly enjoyable time at Le Tilleul. The pool in particular was great, set in a lovely peaceful garden area, with comfy loungers, table and chairs. The Villa accommodation (which is up some steep stairs from the pool) was well equipped and spacious for the three of us. The Villa is situated near the center of the village so is really convenient for local shops etc. This area of Beaujolais was beautiful with vines growing everywhere. We had a friendly welcome during our stay and the owners were particular helpful. We would certainly recommend. Thanks for a great time.

A lovely spacious bright and modern apartment

We had a great holiday in this beautiful part of France. The hosts are extemely welcoming, friendly and helpful, and gave us lots of advice on places to visit locally. We wanted a quiet relaxing and peaceful week away, and the apartment was perfect for that, home from home and very comfortable, but we did find ourselves drawn to explore the local area as it is so beautiful. We would highly recommend this little gem.

The perfect holiday home.

We love this place! We have returned for a second stay this summer after we enjoyed our first stay so much. The gîte is ideal for a family with one or two young children. The house has everything you need, with more crockery, cutlery, glasses etc than you sometimes get in holiday houses. All the kitchen equipment you'd want is there - toaster, coffee machine, microwave, dishwasher etc. There is a separate laundry room with a drying rack - easy to keep those damp swimming costumes and towels out of the way! There is plenty of room in the large sitting/dining room for the family to relax. The rooms are well furnished and attractive. The garden and the pool are beautiful. There is a delightful tucked away bbq/eating area for the gîte. The hosts, Joanne and Bruno, could not be nicer or more welcoming. Everything you need has been thought of, and other things you didn't think you needed are provided with consummate attention and kindness, down to the bottle of delicious local Beaujolais Villages provided on arrival. Joanne is English, and therefore, if your French isn't great, you won't have any difficulties with the booking process, etc. St Etienne des Oullieres is a lovely village, with bakeries, pharmacy, an excellent butcher, a bar, a restaurant, a tabac, a small weekly market: in short, everything you need. You could go there and hardly move from the village for your whole stay if you didn't want to. But you will want to, as the local area is so lovely, and there is a wide range of attractions, cultural events, walking routes, and things to see and do. We are sad to leave, and already dreaming of our next return!

Activity and Interests


St Etienne des Oullières is situated 45 minutes drive from Lyon airport, 2 hours drive from Geneva airport, 1.5 hours drive from St Etienne airport. Easy Jet, and Ryan air, amongst others, offer budget flight to these airports. It is 4 hours drive from Paris and between 6 and 7 hours drive from the channel ports. It is recommended to have a car in order to visit the area.


The village of St Etienne des Oullières (2 minutes walk) has a number of little shops, including, amongst others, a small general store, a butcher, and two bakers, all of which are open on Sunday morning for getting in your supplies There are also two banks. The closest towns, both with trains stations and supermarkets are Villefranche-sur-Saone and Belleville, both 15 minutes drive.

Further Details:

St Etienne des Oullières It is within easy reach of the Mount Brouilly offering panoramic views over the surrounding vineyards. Also close by are Beaujeu, the ancient capital of the Beaujolais, and the medieval villages of Trevoux, Oingt and Perouges.

In the summer many of the surrounding villages offer Sunday 'brocantes', and all, including St Etienne des Oullières, boast a 'caveau' for tasting the local wine. The area has a number of good restaurants ranging from the local ferme-auberges to the more refined gastronomic dining.

For more cultural pursuits, the city of Lyon, 40 minutes to the south, offers excellent museums, along with designer shops and smart restaurants. Forty minutes to the North is the pretty town of Maçon, and a number of historic religious centres including Paray Le Monial and Cluny with its famous abbey, and equestrian centre.

There is plenty to occupy every taste and age group in the area surrouding St Etienne des Oullières.

There is a super zoo and water park with white tigers, water slides and rides (they claim it is 3 parks in 1!) It is situated only 25 minutes drive from the property.

Twenty minutes in the other direction, there is a huge and very interesting bird park. It is situated on the other side of the Saone river in an area which is particulary rich in wildlife, and appeals in particular to bird watchers.

There is a tree forest adventure park to test your ability at clinbing across various obstacles suspended from trees, only 10 minutes drive from the property.

For water sports there are three different lakes between 20 and 40 minutes drive, offering sailing, wind surfing, and pedalos.

There is both fishing and horse riding locally.

The famous Georges de Boeuf wine museum and wine cellar is only 25 minutes drive.

A little further afield, (about 60 minutes drive), there is a very good medieval park and a wolf and eagle park.

It is alarmed in accordance with French safety regulations. It is exclusively for the use of Le Tilleul guests. There is a full set of garden furniture, a barbecue and sun loungers. Utility Room: From the kitchen a door leads to a tiled utility room with a washing machine and plenty of storage space for provisions. There is of course a hoover, mop, ironing board etc Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Prices include linen, bath and swimming pool towels, all essential household products on arrival (washing powder, liquid, sponges, etc ),all utilities, and cleaning before and after your visit. Towels and linen are replaced on a weekly basis.
