Holiday Cottage in picturesque Shorwell, Isle of Wight - great for families

Overview

Property

Updated: 26-Nov-2016
3 bedroom character cottage in unspoilt village, beautiful garden, opposite Crown Inn country pub

This character cottage is located in the centre of the picturesque village of Shorwell, with immediate access to downland walks and approximately 2 miles from the sea.

As the name suggests, Brookside Cottage has a delightful little brook running alongside the beautiful lawned garden. Whilst recently modernized, the property dates back to 1700. On the ground floor there is a large sitting room. The fully fitted kitchen comes complete with range cooker, washing machine / tumble dryer and microwave. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms (one en-suite) and a bathroom. The cottage is furnished to a high standard and with double-glazing and a newly installed LPG boiler central heating system, is ideal for holidays and short breaks all year round.

Guests are welcomed with a hamper from Brighstone Village Shop containing local island produce, local newspaper and in the winter, wood and smokeless fuel for the wood burner. A typical hamper will include Isle of Wight milk, cheese, apple juice, honey, jam, marmalade, cake, eggs, tomato ketchup & sun dried tomatoes, biscuits, muesli and butter (items can be swapped on request). Fair trade tea, coffee and sugar is available in the cottage. Ferry inclusive deals also available - please ask for prices at time of booking.

Shorwell nestles in a wooded valley, encircled by hills. The village has three manor houses and many thatched and stone built picturesque cottages. Shorwell has a great pub, The Crown Inn, which dates back to the 16th century. The pub has a lovely trout filled brook running through its garden (the same one as Brookside Cottage, which is directly opposite). The oldest part of the village is known as Westview and is close to the church of St Peter. The church itself dates back to the 12th century. The village also boasts a post office, re fronted in Georgian style.

About the Owner

My love affair with the Isle of Wight began in 2001 following in the footsteps of my boyfriend who spent happy times on the island learning to paraglide and looking for fossils. His love of the island was infectious and more visits followed together. We bought our first cottage (2 The Granary, Brighstone) in 2004 and our holiday letting adventure began! We bought our second cottage (Brookside Cottage) in 2008 and thoroughly enjoy being able to share our cottages and the island with our holiday guests.

I have just returned from our stay at your cottage at Shorwell. I must say I was very impressed with the lovely cosy cottage. It was nice and warm, and we did need the heating last week, with plenty of hot water and very well appointed. Probably the nicest holiday cottage I've rented. Beautiful little garden, which unfortunately we couldn't take full advantage of because of the mixed weather. The cottage was very clean and tidy and everything one could need had been thought of. The welcome hamper was a lovely touch and much appreciated.

You will certainly be my first choice when visiting the Island again and I will spread the word. Thank you again for providing comfortable accommodation.

Beautiful, don't want to leave cottage!

  • 5 of 5

As we drew up outside the pretty cottage I felt very emotional as I had no idea it was going to be so lovely. My partner bought me a bouquet of flowers when we got home, to say thank you for choosing such a beautiful holiday cottage, I think that says it all! Brookside Cottage is very spacious and has everything you could possibly need. Looking out the bedroom window each morning on to the delightful garden was a treat. The view of the lovely church up the road from the cottage just made it for me. Opening the kitchen window and listening to the tinkling brook was really nice. Such a pretty village and an ideal base to visit all the places we went to. The people at The Crown Inn across the road were very friendly and it was great to pop over for breakfast. Also highly recommended is The Three Bishops in Brighstone, we loved the food, the owners and staff and their gorgeous puppy! For excellent food and service is The Isle of Wight Pearl Factory Cafe. See if you can leave without some new earrings ladies! Then a walk along the cliff after your meal is so relaxing. Teresa was so kind to us from the start and Hazel was great at sorting out the tele. We will be back Teresa! Sooner than you think, we are coming back in September as we have fallen in love with the Isle of Wight.

Owner's Response: So lovely to read your feedback which reminds me of the first time we saw Brookside Cottage. We too fell in love with its character and all the flowers in the garden blooming in the summer sunshine. I fell in love with the view from the kitchen too and a couple of years later we got married in the church! Really good to see you enjoyed our wonderful local pubs and Isle of Wight Pearl too.

Welcoming cottage in great location

  • 4 of 5

We were impressed by the helpfulness of the owners even before our arrival. Our last minute request for a change to the ferry booking was sorted out without any fuss (there is a discount if the owner makes the ferry booking). The cottage itself reflects this care for customers. Lots of personal touches and a clear intention that all visitors enjoy their stay. When we reported a glitch with the heating the problem was fixed in less than half an hour with a personal visit. The cottage is warm and comfortable and the location is great for walking. We didn't use our car for the 2 days of our stay and went for some great walks right from the door. Recommended.

Facilities

From the Owner

We now spend as much time on the island as we can, taking our dinghy out fishing or walking the landscape. We love stepping off the ferry to such peace and are working hard to refurbish a delightful bungalow that will soon be our island home! We have worked hard to embed sustainability in our business - Brookside Cottage achieving Highly Commended in the Beautiful South Awards 2012.
