Large traditional house in the heart of old Staithes. Lovely outside deck

Updated: 13-Oct-2016
Pelican in Staithes, North Yorkshire Moors, England - Quiet and convenient location. A few steps from pub & restaurants and two minutes walk to safe beach

Pelican is a beautifully refurbished quirky yet contemporary 3-storey village town house offering comfortable accommodation for larger groups and families. Situated in the cobbled heart of old Staithes - walk out of the back door and watch the ever changing tidal beck or stroll out from the front into the unspoilt high street with its traditional shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. The harbour, beach and rock pools are an easy few minutes walk away. For more adventurous walkers, Staithes is situated on the Cleveland Way with excellent walks both north and south from the village. Staithes also has a well established artist community, renowned art gallery and annual arts festival held in September.

About the Owner

I spent many childhood holidays in Staithes in the holiday home my family bought in the 1970s and fell in love with its unique charm then. Guy and I have visited as often as possible over the years and have been lucky enough to buy our own seaside home in the village. We live in Yorkshire so get to spend plenty of time in our favourite place with our three daughters, family and friends.

Quite simply a fabulous house in a fabulous destination

  • 5 of 5

Our week in Pelican could not have been better. The moment you walk in the door you feel at home - little treats for adults, kids and dogs! Everything you could possibly want is provided, enough to keep you occupied yet not so intrusive as to make you feel you can't just simply relax.

The kitchen was extremely well supplied with cooking equipment and crockery and was immaculately clean (as was the rest of the house) but the nearby pubs, cafes and bistros (what a choice for such a small place) are definitely worth a visit. The Cod and Lobster and Cleveland Corner were fantastic and everywhere is so dog friendly. All the rooms were welcoming and cosy and the house was adored by the kids - they made themselves right at home and loved having their own bathroom.

Staithes itself provided plenty of activities: exploring the nooks and crannies of the village; hunting for fossils; the Captain Cook Museum; the stepping stones and skimming stones in the river; the shops; discovering the history like the site of the viaduct and of course Captain Jack's house. Further afield there are numerous excellent beaches, great road cycling and Mountain Biking at Sutton Bank, the wonderfully interesting Ironstone Museum and walking up Roseberry Topping.

I will be recommending this to friends and family and hope to return with them - it wouldn't be fair if they went without us!

The Pelican is like your home from home, styled by an interior designer just next to the sea!

  • 5 of 5

The first thing you notice about this place is just how absolutely stunning everything is, I am convinced the owners are designers!! The moment you walk into the house, your eyes are drawn to the lovely log fire and the teal sofa's in the living room. A fantastic large table in the dining room was perfect for dinner in the evening and the kitchen that really does have everything you need. The lovely bottle of wine and chocolates on the table along with treats for the dogs, milk and eggs in the fridge and a wonderful folder with information about the house was such a nice surprise. From coffee beans to garlic press, the kitchen is perfect for cooking up a storm, and we did, taking full advantage of the fantastic butchers just down the road. Even the little courtyard at the back has been tastefully dressed and it was lovely to sit out there with a glass of wine. Although both the George and the Cod and Lobster are moments away! The bedrooms are all equally stunning with well chosen bed linen and all are of a good size with some lovely views overlooking cowbar. Having two bathrooms was a real bonus when there are a few of you and both are excellent. Two things that are worth a mention, the fantastic speaker in the dining room that pairs up with your bluetooth and the stunning art collection. We were all impressed with the Art, some really amazing work in this house. We just loved the place and will all return again, in fact having stayed in a number of cottages in Staithes over the years I can now say that the Pelican is the best place we have ever stayed in. I am a little hesetent to say this, as the danger is it will become so popular that I wont' be able to return, but then again, you can't keep a place like this a secret for long. Well done Emma & Guy - you have created such a gem of a house!!!

Owner's Response: We're really glad you enjoyed all Staithes and Pelican have to offer. Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed review. It's always nice to know our seaside home is appreciated. We're not interior designers but we do love a bit of style and a lot of art! Come back soon as we're always adding to and changing what's on display.

A very well equipped house.

  • 4 of 5

This house has everything you can imagine:-

Well equipped kitchen,

Plenty of crockery and glasses,

Good quality furnishings, towels and bedding,

Toys and games for little ones

Games and jigsaws

Books, magazines, tv and DVDs

Staithes is one of the safest places we have stayed in, this was our second stay at Pelican and we had a lovely week, our Grandchildren aged 2 to 9 all had a good time and thoroughly enjoyed crabbing.

Emma and Guy certainly welcome their guests to a well managed house and encourage feedback during your stay.

The new sweet shop opposite the house was a particular hit!

We visited a variety of places, steam rally in Whitby, North Yorkshire railway from Whitby to Pickering, boat trip round Whitby followed by obligatory fish and chips, the older children enjoyed a visit to a local mine.

We would certainly recommend Pelican to our friends and family

superb accommodation in the heart of beautiful Staithes

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at Pelican, it's a traditional village home with lots of thoroughly modern twists. It was a pleasure to return here each day after walking sections of the Cleveland way or exploring the Jurassic coast. We'll definitely be back!

From the Owner

Staithes is unique. It has all the traditional charm without the tourist hustle and bustle. Despite this unspoilt beauty, Staithes has plenty going on with a thriving diverse community of fisherman, artists, small businesses and restaurants.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Durham Tees Valley at 25 Miles Nearest Barpub : The Royal George at 20 Metres Nearest Train : Whitby at 10 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Cleveland Bistro at 20 Metres Nearest Beach : Staithes at 200 Metres Car: not necessary

Staithes harbour, beach and rock pools are a few minutes walk away.

There is a small safe sandy beach within the harbour and other rock pools and swimming spots either side of the harbour walls.

Runswick Bay with a larger beach can be accessed via the Cleveland Way (a beautiful 1 hour walk and the chance to get the bus back), or by car (15minutes). Slightly further south along the coast is the wide sandy beach of Sandsend and the beaches and harbour at Whitby (20 minutes drive)

Nearest airports are Teesside/Durham (45minutes); Leeds/Bradford (90 minutes away) and Newcastle (90 minutes)

Nearest stations are Whitby (20 minutes) and Saltburn (15 minutes)

A car is recommended but not essential

Within Staithes there are three pubs all providing lunch time and evening meals (two in the old village and one at 't'top'); a butchers (which also sells basics such as milk, eggs, bread); two restaurants and a cafe plus other souvenir/gift shops. These are all within a few minutes walk of the house.

Further up the village there are other cafes, shops and a supermarket. These are only 10-15 minutes walk although the hill is quite steep.

Most supermarkets (Asda and Sainsburys) will deliver.

Further Details:

Staithes , as well as being an ancient fishing village, is home to the popular Children's CBBC series 'Old Jacks Boat'. Indeed, both twin rooms have a view of Old Jack's house and younger children will have fun spotting the many other locations used in the programme.

A variety of activities and courses are available in Staithes and the neighbouring areas. These include art classes, cookery, coastal foraging, fishing and surfing.

Staithes is located within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and there are many places of interest within a short drive.

A few miles North of Staithes is Saltburn-on-Sea with its beaches and impressive cliff railway (funicular)

For steam train enthusiasts you can access the North Yorkshire Moors Railway within 20 minutes at Whitby or into the Moors at Goathland or Pickering.

Whitby is a larger harbour town with many attractions including the ruined Abbey and the Dracula Experience plus seaside arcades and a funfair.

Captain Cook has several connections with Staithes and the Captain Cook museum is a short walk from the house.

Walking around the cliffs you might still find some of the fossils (trilobites) and jet that made the area famous.

Have a go at fishing, catch a few crabs and if you don't catch anything you can buy freshly caught local seafood direct from the company located at the top of the village. Lobster and crab are the local speciality

Staithes is the perfect base for seeing stunning scenery from the coastal cliff top walks along The Cleveland Way; exploring interesting geology; fossil hunting; rock pooling and crabbing off rocks in the calm waters of the harbour, or simply just taking time out to sit, relax and enjoy some traditional Yorkshire ale in the local pubs.

From the Owner

Pelican is in the heart of the village and when we're there we really feel part of Staithes life. It's one of the few larger properties in old Staithes so plenty of room for our family and friends to stay. We love sipping a glass or two in our decked yard and wandering down to the bridge glass in hand to watch the sunset.
