Traditional Cottage Nr. Bayeux, Calvados, Normandy, France

Updated: 03-Dec-2016
Cottage in La Chapelle, Nr. Bayeux, Calvados, Normandy, France - Rural Location

A traditional ivy-clad stone cottage, sympathetically restored, on a 300-year-old former cider and dairy farm, La Chapelle is situated in three acres of tranquil Calvados countryside, providing an ideal base for varying holiday needs. The English-owned Gîte (self-catering holiday cottage) sleeps up to five people.

The stone farmhouse and cottage, typical of the area, are situated at the end of a 100-metre drive bordered by pear and cherry trees and face southwest. Historic Bayeux, D-Day beaches and the seaside are all within ½ hour. Ideal for family holidays or house-hunting! The nearest ferry port - Ouistreham / Caen is just 45 minutes away.

Whether you wish to visit places of historical & architectural interest, soak up some sun on the wonderfully spacious sandy beaches, or simply have a peaceful break in a rural idyll, this region is an ideal holiday destination.

La Chapelle was formerly the largest dairy & cider farm in the area, owned by the local mayor. It is just possible to discern traces of the Gîte's original role as dairy and cider store; many original features have been retained in its simple, natural country style decor. The irregular oak-beamed ceilings were carefully sanded and polished, stairs made with the wood from a huge ancient oak cider barrel and dining room walls rendered with traditional Normandy creamy limestone plaster. A date stone set in the wall of a barn opposite gives a date of 1727; some buildings are undoubtedly earlier. During WWII the main house was used as a communications centre.

"Our family has rented gites and various other lodgings in France for over 20 years. Our visit to La Chapelle was far and away our best experience ever!

The property itself is gorgeous! The warm and welcoming stone gite is covered in sprawling ivy, and it looks from the outside like something from a story book. Despite the quaint outside view, the gite inside is surprisingly spacious. The back garden is large and inviting, with plenty of room for children to play or family members to enjoy an outdoor meal at the picnic table provided. The gite was clean and beautifully decorated in a charming, rustic style. We always felt warm, comfortable, and safe at La Chapelle.

Upon our departure, our 17-year old daughter summed up our visit best when she said, 'One day, I want to be married and honeymoon here at La Chapelle.' "

"Firstly, we must say a huge ‘Merci Beaucoup’ to Jo and Alan for making our stay so enjoyable. It’s handy that they live within the same grounds (the most gorgeous ex-cider farm), so they are always on hand to deal with any queries.

The gite itself is like a little bit of magic... seriously romantic. Huge stone walls, wooden beams...it’s like going back in time. There were only the two of us, but there’s ample room for a family to stay....and a super garden to the rear.

If you have an ounce of romance in your soul, then you will fall in love a little bit with La Chapelle...as we did. And you’ll be sure to return. As we will. Can’t wait..."

"La Chapelle has a beautiful rural location, exactly what a “gite” should be, in my mind. Part of a group of very old, ivy clad farm buildings internally it has wonderful, huge exposed beams in every room. Upstairs the two double bedrooms are bright and airy and the beds very comfortable. The bathroom and bath are large and there was always plenty of hot water. The secluded garden at the rear was lush and leafy, chairs, table, BBQ etc are available - a lovely space for kids to play and explore. We found Jo to be very pleasant and helpful. She was on site to hand over the keys and give us an introductory tour and she ensured we had wi-fi access and wine - what more could we ask for!!"

"From the welcoming bottle of wine on arrival Jo and Alan helped make our stay so pleasant and were very helpful. The gite is comfortable and clean and in total keeping with its rural surroundings. Bayeux is a delight, as are the numerous small villages and ports within easy reach. The American Military Cemetry at Omaha Beach gives pause for thought, as do the many smaller ones dotted around, but in a different way. A most enjoyable week, made all the more so by the friendliness of our hosts."

Car: necessary

The nearest point on the coast - 25 minutes by car - is Omaha beach. As well as being famed for its role in the 1944 D-Day landings, it offers miles of sandy beaches - ideal for a family day out.

Within easy reach of the channel ferry ports of Caen /Ouistreham (45 minute drive), Le Havre (1½ hours) and Cherbourg (1½ hours). Dieppe is a 2½-hour drive, Calais is around 4½ hours.

The airport of Caen (Carpiquet) is 20 minutes by car, regular flights to London (Southend).

The train station at Bayeux is 20 minutes' drive; trains take less than 2 hours direct to Paris - great for a day out!

Due to our rural location, you will need your own transport once here.

Our local small town, Caumont l'Éventé (5km) has a good range of shops, a garage, La Poste bureau, two supermarkets and a petrol station. Intermarché is open on Sunday mornings.

The nearest large town is Bayeux, 18km away, which has a varied selection of restaurants and shops, with plenty of large supermarkets on the outskirts of the town.

The D-Day beaches are ½ - ¾hr by car.

Caen, the regional capital - 35km.

Further Details:

The city of Caen, the capital of Calvados, with its mediæval château, colourful street markets and shops is 35 minutes by car.

The Suisse Normande, an area of spectacular tree-clad hills, deep gorges and fast flowing rivers, is a must for a day out.

Bayeux, famous for its Tapestry, cathedral and museums, is twenty minutes away. Just 10-15 minutes further is the picturesque fishing town of Port-en-Bessin, also the sandy beaches of the Côte de Nacre for a family day out at the seaside.

For those with an interest in military history, we are in a particularly ideal position for exploring WWII sites. The D-Day beaches, Pointe du Hoc, Arromanches (with its museums & 360° cinema) and many, many more monuments and museums are all within easy travelling distance, just 30 - 45 minutes by car.

Honfleur and Mont St. Michel are within 1½ hours' drive; Paris and the wine-producing Loire valley with its gorgeous châteaux are longer day trips. Just ten minutes from La Chapelle is the town of Balleroy with its Mansard château housing a fascinating balloon museum. Most sports and leisure activities are catered for in the area and there are numerous places of historical interest within easy reach.

Seafood, apples, cider and cream form the basis of the region's cuisine; local produce can be bought in the numerous street markets in the surrounding area. Our département, Calvados, is well known for its fiery apple brandy of the same name, distilled from cider. There are several cider-producing farms open to visitors where you can buy cider, Calvados and other local produce.
