About Douglas Porter

Having spent many years visiting the beautiful area of Deauville with my husband and children, we finally fulfilled our dream of buying a wonderful villa located between two racecourses and 10 minutes from the beach and designer shops for me| it was the best decision we have ever made and we still visit frequently both on our own and with our grown-up children - there is so much to do and see for all ages that we never tire. Please feel free to ask any question as we have acquired a great deal of local knowledge gathered over the years.

Fabulous family villa !

  • 5 of 5

Myself, my husband , our 2 small children and my niece and boyfriend went for 2 weeks to this fabulous villa. We were surprised to find it so warm and welcoming - the photos do not do it justice ! We quickly settled in - that night we went to a friendly restaurant - local food and really a delight! The next day I went shopping with my niece - and my husband took the children to a beach within walking distance. Later we went to the Olympian size Equestrian centre outside the complex and watched the dressage The villa has all amenities - and especially important was the free wifi for my niece who is 20 and like all young people on it all day !!! There is a swimming pool - which the little ones wanted to use - but it was too cold and not open - but we are now rebooking for July in the school holidays. Doug , the owner, was most obliging on the phone - and recommended things to do etc. It is a really lovely family home......we can't wait to go back ! Alice

Absolutely loved it from the start!

  • 5 of 5

As soon as I saw the house I knew my family and I would love it ! And we did ! It had everything - it was spotlessly clean - I love cooking - the kitchen was very well equipped . My 2 children felt safe and secure in the gated environment - staying in watching sky tv, whilst my husband and I enjoyed eating at the local restaurant located 2 minutes walk from the complex. Access to wifi was perfect for my husband to continue his work whilst on holiday. We found the area interesting - especially with the historic D - Day commemoration. We will certainly be going back and have provisionally booked for 2 weeks in October '14.

Beautiful Villa, Amazing Holiday

  • 5 of 5

I have just returned from spending a week at the Villa with my partner; it’s the best holiday we’ve had for a very long time made special by both the Villa and the location. As young professionals, we decided to take a gamble and book a villa for the first time; needless to say we have now been converted.

The location of the Villa is absolutely perfect. It is situated in the modern yet charming and beautiful village of St-Arnoult, a two minute walk away from fabulous local French shops and a scenic riverbank. Being a short walk away from Deauville town centre was ideal, as the complex benefits from a quiet and secure atmosphere that is not afforded in town centre accommodation. The Villa is large, spacious and tastefully decorated; we particularly enjoyed having a garden. No expensive has been spared in furnishing the Villa, which truly distinguishes it. I found the gatekeeper John Mark to be friendly and helpful, it was really useful having an onsite contact to answer our questions.

There is so much to do in both Deauville and the wider Normandy province; the Villa acted as an excellent base for us to explore several places during our stay including Bayeux, Rouen, Honfleur and the D-Day Landing Beaches. There is also so much to do locally, we enjoyed playing golf at the, Barrière, exploring the world class beaches, watching the horse racing and indulging in sensational French food at restaurants in Trouville. My only regret Is that we didn’t book a longer stay, there is only so much you can fit into a week.

After having such a wonderful time, I have already booked my next stay for the summer.

Positives first: clean, large well presented house. Lovely bedrooms and bathrooms. Good facilities in the kitchen. Great location. 2 minute walk from a fantastic patisserie, useful small supermarket, and a really good restaurant 'Cote Rive'. Useful swimming pool.

Negatives: lack of wifi. One of the reasons we chose this property is because we have our own business and need to access emails on a regular basis. The owner had stated on a reply from a previous review that wifi was being installed in 2012, but despite 2 emails to him we had no reply and we incurred significant costs to access the Internet.

St Arnoult felt very artificial, almost 'Legolandish'. It all seemed to have been built exactly at the same time in the same style and was severely lacking in 'soul'...saying that though, Deauville was only 10 minutes away by car.

The owner states that Deauville racecourse is a 5 minute walk...wrong. The perimeter is at least a 5-10 minute walk. The entrance is at least a 20 minute walk - but drive to it, parking is easy, only 3 euros to get in, and a great afternoon out.

The 'gatekeeper/caretaker ' and neighbours were very standoffish. The caretaker didn't let my children jump in the pool, wear goggles or swim in the pool in the rain. The pool sign said it was open at 8am. it was seldom open by 9.30am, and not open on an overcast, but very warm day. The neighbour complained because we hung our washing outside the front of the house in the sunshine And complained because we parked outside our own house.

There was a lack of comfortable garden furniture, especially considering the size of the property. The details stated plenty of board games...these consisted of an extremely old version of Trivial Pursuit and some playing cards.

Overall, a great area to stay in as a base to exploring Normandy.

The Perfect Place to stay in Normandy

  • 5 of 5

This villa's description is everything that it says it is and more. The property was clean, well maintained, in a secure gated small community and in an ideal situation for exploring the Calvados area of Normandy. The kindness, consideration and details of the area, provided by the owners, could not have been better. I have already begun to recommend this property to friends and relatives. There are far too many excellent restaurants in the area to name them all but our favourite was the Auberge de la Touques at Pont-l'Eveque. There are so many excellent leaflets, provided freely by all the Tourist Information Offices everywhere you go that I will not try to compete with them. I will just say that if you choose this villa you will never be short of somewhere to go or something to do. We will definitely return.

Lovely house just outside Deauville

  • 5 of 5

We arrived a bit later than arranged due to mechanical problems. I must also say that the directions given didn't make sense to me on the ground. I never found the D288 at all. I also got directions from the AA website and they said the same so it's maybe me!! I had looked at the place on Google Earth so knew what the area looked like which was a great help when finally tracking down the place.

The house was just as described and very comfortable. Well equipped kitchen with a really good electric hob (sometimes these can be woeful). The showers were both over bath but performed well and there was plenty of hot water. The electric heating was more than adequate. The beds were very comfortable. One minor complaint is that the only mirror upstairs is in the bathroom, I would have liked a mirror in the bedroom.

It was very quiet when we were there, we chatted to a neighbour a couple of times and met Jean Marc (caretaker) both on the grounds and in the village. He was very helpful and friendly but you do need some French as he doesn't have much English.

The house was perfect for us, it was my Dads first experience of self catering at 86 - I did all the catering of course. He had the downstairs room and loved it, comfy beds, warm, en-suite........

I wouldn't say that the house was walking distance from Deauville but I'm 60, if I were younger it may be a different story, but it's only a few minutes drive.

St Arnoult is a lovely village. Just 1 minutes walk from the house with shops etc. I highly recommend the bar/tabac St Arnoult just on the roundabout for weekday lunch. I don't know if they're open at weekends but in the week they do a roaring trade with the locals and the food is really good. Again they don't have much English - they speak French at you LOUDLY - just like us really :-)) The supermarket and the butcher were open on Sunday, supermarket closed on Wednesday. Nice cafe/restaurant in the square with wifi (none at the house). Lovely patisserie open at 0700 for croissants.

Big Hyper U supermarket 5 minutes drive away along with petrol, garages etc.....

The pool appeared to be open but we didn't try it. It looked very inviting and if we visit again earlier in the year I would certainly be in there.

All in all a very comfortable house very close to Deauville. We loved it.
