About the property

Cottage in Allanton, Nr. Duns, Scottish Borders, Scotland - Traditional Cottage On The Edge Of A Pretty Village In The Heart Of The Scottish Borders

Greenloaning is a delightful traditional semi-detached cottage situated on the edge of the peaceful conservation village of Allanton. With a large enclosed garden and wonderful views over the surrounding countryside it has recently been completely renovated and is traditionally furnished to a very high standard. It is very well equipped and offers full central heating as well a log burning stove. The cottage is perfectly located to enjoy all that the area has to offer including walking; golf; fishing; cycling; riding; the local historic houses and castles such as Alnwick Castle (Harry Potter), Bamburgh Castle on the beach, Floors Castle and Manderston with its silver staircase; the stunning coastline with the pretty harbour at St Abbs, and the lovely beach at Coldingham with its surfing facilities, as well as locally based quad biking, sailing, canoeing, and clay pigeon shooting etc. In the village itself, and a very short walk away, is one of the best local pubs/restaurants in the area serving real ales and wonderful food (and recently voted in the Times newspaper as one of the top 50 pubs for alfresco dining).

About Lowri

I live locally, just outside of Eccles with my husband Peter and three children. We had a holiday cottage with our last home and I so enjoyed meeting the many guests we had and making the cottage as perfect for them as possible that when we moved house we decided to buy a holiday cottage. I love the fact that many of our guests become friends and visit again and again.

Lowri purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Lowri chose Scottish Borders

We loved Greenloaning as soon as we saw it despite the fact that it was pretty run down. We completely refurbished the cottage, new floors, new windows, complete plumbing, Central heating, electrics and we even discovered lovely stone original fireplace behind the moden brick one. It is now lovely and cosy with the log burning stove making it very snug. The garden has almost doubled in size since we cut back the overgrown shrubs. Perfect to relax and enjoy the sun and the many songbirds, as well as well as a perfect place for the children and dogs to let off steam. We even discovered an old well (made safe by a new wall surround and grill).

What makes this cottage unique

Allanton is a lovely village and perfectly located to enjoy all the Borders has to offer, whether it be the beaches, golf courses, or country homes and gardens etc. the village pub is fantastic and offers some of the best food and refreshments in the area. Despite being located off the middle of the village, Greenloaning is very peaceful and is edged by fields on one side. There is a small children's playpark along the lane and the children can go there safely without having to cross a road.

Fishing for salmon or sea trout is available close by on the Whiteadder Water through Bluestone Fishing.

Bluestone Fishing cater for both the experienced fisher or the novice and are able to supply all equipment necessary if required, as well as offering angling lessons in order to make salmon fishing available to everyone.

Beautiful, peaceful home from home

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Lowrie for providing us with such a cosy home from home for our short break. The attention to detail was wonderful. The little homely touches, like the flowers and the really wonderful welcome pack with organic free range eggs, dry cured back bacon, local honey and biscuits show a lot of thought has gone into presenting your home. The cottage was so clean and well-equipped it was a delight. The quality crockery and glasswear was brilliant and there was everything we could wish for in the kitchen. Looking out of the kitchen window over the garden with an abundance of daffodils and spring flowers and nesting birds singing their hearts out was just such a wonderful experience. We even sat out in the garden and had tea as it was so warm. We didn't use the wood-burning stove as it was unseasonally warm but it would have made the lounge really warm and relaxing on a cold evening

It was ideally placed for us as we wanted to be within easy striking distance of Berwick and Coldingham. But for people wanting to go further afield such as Northumberland coast and Edinburgh it would still be an ideal touring base. And the Allanton Inn is on the doorstep too!

We just loved it! It was one of the nicest self-catering places we have ever stayed in. Thank you so much! A lot of effort has gone into it and whoever does the cleaning is doing an excellent job!

Owner's Response: Dear Christine. Thank you for your fabulous review of Greenloaning. It was lovely to read and great to know we are achieving what we aim to. The garden is lovely at this time of year and how wonderful you had the weather to really enjoy it. Hopefully we shall get to welcome you back one day in the future and, once again, thank you for taking the time to review us. Best wishes. Lowri

Very comfortable and gorgeous cottage

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this really comfortable and peaceful cottage - just wished we could have stayed for longer. The garden is very large and secluded and our young dog loved exploring it.

The area is very tranquil and is a good base for exploring the coast and inland.

Lowri was extremely thoughtful and had provided an amazing welcome package and had prepared the fire for us - a lovely finishing touch.

I would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

Just perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have hoped for a better place to relax and enjoy the borders. Lowri's house is just perfect : there is everything you need. Beautifull sunny and secluded garden if the weather is nice, cozy warm bright and confortable inside with the wood stove ready to be started, a lovely bathroom and a separate toilet upstairs (something we did not get many places). Games, books, dvd, maps and info on the whole region. The bedrooms are just perfect, you want to stay there all day (even a hot bottle to warm you up in the middle of winter).

It was the perfect place to end our 2 weeks tour of Scotland ... we didn't want to leave!

And Lowry is a lovely host, always available to answer any request asap and with very good advice on things to do and where to eat (delicious meal in the pub near the house!)

Thank you, we hope to be back one day

So pretty,.....

  • 5 of 5

Our second visit this year to the cottage. It is lovely, with great character. It is warm, comfortable and well appointed. Our two dogs loved the large garden, it is secure for them to play as it would be for children. We will be happy to return when we can.
