About sue oxley

I have lived in Northumberland all of my life & wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Paul & I have been married 40 years & have two daughters & three grandchildren. Both of us coming from large families means family & friends are very important to us (any excuse for a get together). Cobblers Cottage feels like an extension of this I love getting ready for guests arrival & try hard to make sure that I have catered for anything that I think will be needed. It means a lot to me that you feel welcome & "at home" . I try to provide those little things that are a pain to go out & buy on your holidays. I well remember arriving at our holiday cottage after a very long hot drive & not even having a tea bag & milk , therefore you will always arrive to tea coffee milk & a little welcome pack, my sister (auntie Mand)provides me with home made cake & jam made with fruit from her organic allotment.

I can't control the weather, but I want you to feel comfortable, relaxed & to enjoy Cobblers as much as we do. Treat it as your home that's the biggest compliment to us & hopefully we'll be welcoming you back soon.

Why sue oxley chose Northumberland Coast

Cobblers is a lovely house, it's bright , homely & very relaxing. It's perfect for families being over three floors, or for couples as you just dont use the top floor. I love the position it's so central for coast & country in a fabulous part of Northumberland. The Scottish borders are just a short drive away & East Lothian is well worth a visit. North Berwick is a lovely day out with a trip to the Seabird centre & a boat trip round Bass rock .

It's hard to appreciate how well positioned Cobblers is for exploring this lovely area.

What makes this house unique

Auntie Mandys cake & jam .

We are just a short 10 minute drive from the stunning Northumbrian coastline. The renowned birdwatchers paradise that is Budle bay is about 3 miles away, the lovely village of Bamburgh with its iconic castle overlooking the vast expanse of beach is a further mile away, whilst there, take time to visit the Grace Darling museum & if food is on the menu we can recommend the Mizen head for fabulous seafood !

The village of Seahouses 3 miles beyond Bamburgh with its lovely harbour from which you can take a boat trip to see the famous Farne Islands or maybe an all day bird watching trip, grey seal cruise or a cruise around Holy Island . Should you decide to visit the Farnes please follow advice & wear a hat being dive bombed by terns isn't all fun (as I found out). You can also dive the Farnes, I have it on good authority that Billy Shiels offers some of the best diving & wildlife watching in the UK. To the south you can visit the lovely villages of Craster, Newton by the Sea Warkworth & Amble . Whilst in Craster you can walk along the coast to the beautiful ruin that is Dunstanburgh castle & in springtime (or anytime) visit the lovely Hawick Hall gardens famous for its beautiful show of snowdrops. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne reached by causeway (please check local tide times) is 10 miles to the North & is a must for visitors to Northumberland.

For the gardeners out there we have the world famous Alnwick garden & the fantastic treehouse. Children will love the water features which they can play in just make sure you take extra clothes!! Whilst in Alnwick take axwalk into the town where there are a good range of independant shops & of course you can pop along to Barter books the largest second hand bookstore in the country .

Cragside & Wallington Hall (National Trust) are a lovely day out with lots of space for the children & both houses are well worth a visit. The minature steam railway at Heatherslaw taking you along the riverside to Ford is worth a visit.

The nearest airport is Newcastle airport which is approx 40 miles to the south. The ferry port of Newcastle is again approx 40 miles. There are train stations at Alnmouth Approx 18 miles south & Berwick 13 miles north. There is a regular bus service in Belford so a car would not be essential but to explore this lovely area of Northumberland it would be recommended.

The village of Bamburgh 5 miles away with its fantastic castle seeming to rise out of the rock face. Seahouses with its trips to the Farne Islands to see its seabird colonies and seals in the autumn, 7 miles away. Alnwick with the world famous Alnwick gardens & its castle (known as the Windsor of the North) is 15miles away. The walled town of Berwick of which a walk around the walls is a must is 13 miles to the north. The holy island of Lindisfarne reached by causeway is 10 miles away. Newcastle & the Metro Centre for a great day shopping are about 47 miles away.

Further Details:

Belford has a co-op, newsagents a couple of small independant shops, a cafe, golf club & 3 public houses 2 of which serve food there is also a fish & chip shop. There is a farm shop with cafe also serving meals in the evening ( please check times) & a lovely little gift shop . 4 miles from Belford is the beautiful Budle Bay famous for its birdlife & overwintering birds. Bamburgh castle & beach are a must, the castle built in the 1200's rises out of the rockface overlooking the beautiful beach & the village cricket field, the grace Darling museum is well worth a visit, she is buried in the churchyard across from the museum, there are 2-3 small shops & four pubs serving food & snacks. The fishing village of Seahouses has a bank & a good range of shops whilst in Seahouses a boat trip to the famous Farne Islands to see the comical Puffins is a real treat & a must , especially July to early August, strong headgear is recommended as the terns are highly protective of their young & prone to "dive bombing" , boat trips go regularly ..but do check times. Alnwick is 15 miles from Belford & you cannot go without visiting the world famous gardens & the beautiful Alnwick castle (parts of Harry Potter were filmed here) the home of the Duke & Duchess of Northumberland. A lovely spacious cottage in a good location

  • 5 of 5

We would highly recommend this cottage. It was more spacious than we expected and was well maintained. It was also an ideal location for exploring both the coast and inland. We had two small children in our group aged 5 and 7 and they loved it. In particular, the owner Sue could not be more helpful and accommodating. She made a very good cottage special.

Fantastic cottage, fantastic owner

  • 5 of 5

Cobblers Cottage was fantastic. The location is great for exploring Northumberland and the village of Belford is idyllic.

The cottage was very clean and well equipped with great attention to detail. What really made it for us though was the small touches by the owner. There were provitions there on arrival including a lovely cake and wine alongside tea, milk and eggs etc. We even had chocolates on the beds. Our two small boys loved the collection of toys and games which included buckets and spades and frisbees. There was everything we could ask for in respect of the boys- travel cot, high chair, potty, kids cutlery, cups, plates, stair gates. ... the list is endless.

Overall a great week in a great cottage. Thank you Sue.

Super place to stay in Northumberland

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Cobbler's cottage. It was well-maintained, clean and had a lot of cheerful paintings. I also particularly liked the paintings/pictures of nearby castles and country houses. Our welcome pack was great, even better than we had anticipated with homemade cake and jam among a few other things. Sue was very welcoming and thorough in response to queries. There was attention to detail in every aspect.

It is also a handy location- the village is not too busy, but there was still a selection of shops and pubs. Being near the A1 made it very easy to get to attractions including Alnwick and Lindisfarne.

I would not hesitate to recommend it and hope to go back there one day.

Northumberland at its best

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cottage for 10 days this summer and had an amazing time. From the moment we arrived we felt complete welcome and at home, everything was perfect and Sue was so incredibly helpful and friendly. The house was beautifully clean and everything that a family could need was there. The house was a perfect place to visit the local attractions, so close to castles and the beach. We had a wonderful time and we definitely stay again.
