5 Bedroom House With Glorious Views Of The Mountains and the river

Overview

Property

Updated: 07-Nov-2016
House in Skelwith Bridge - In Langdale valley but close to Ambleside, Grasmere and Coniston.

For further details, please visit our website: www.visitgreenbank.co.uk

We have availability for the New Year 2016 due to a recent cancellation. Please contact us to see if it will give you a location to bring in the 2017!

On the 19th November there is a fantastic procession through ambleside where father chistmas parades through the town followed by children who make paper lanterns. The evening finishes off with fireworks in the local park. It will certainly get the family in Christmas cheer.

It is time to be thinking of Christmas and new year in the lake district. Our four bedroom house in Skelwith Bridge is ideal for the family get togethers. It is, at the moment, available for both Christmas and the new year. We have a room for your four legged friends to stay too.

A beautiful large four bedroomed house set in its own mature grounds with the best that the lake district has to offer at your doorstep. You could walk all week without taking your car out of the drive. Away from the crowds but with the conveniences of modern living at hand. Within a short stroll, you will find warm and welcoming cumbrian pubs and cafes and within a short drive you can access all the facilities of lively Ambleside town.

Greenbank House can be let as one big property or easily as three sub units. When let as one large house, it provides spacious accommodation for its occupants with plenty of room for people to find their own nooks and crannies. It has a main kitchen, lounge, conservatory area but it also has two further kitchen, dining areas and additional living rooms.

For pets, we have a lockable outbuilding for them to sleep in and a large garden for them to roam around in. (We ask that pets are kept out of the house).

Summer in the Lake District is quite breathtaking. People swimming in the lakes, going for strolls along valleys and up mountains. May has been a kick start to summer. Hot and sunny throughout with a bumper year for the lakedistrict blossom. The swimmers in the great northern swim experienced some of the warmest (relatively) waters in Windermere.

People who visit Greenbank, come for its excellent location. Based in Skelwith Bridge at the gateway to Langdale valley, you are surrounded by some of the best scenary lake district has to offer but the honey pot towns of Ambleside, Grasmere and Conistan are only 10 minutes away; as are two of the lake districts best known lakes, Windermere and Conistan. People who are coming to Greenbank have been returning for 25 years odd since they love what it has to offer.

The house consists of four bedrooms, three doubles and 1 twin, three lounges, three kitchens, three dining areas, one conservatory and four bathrooms. Access to two of the lounges, bedrooms and kitchens is without any steps making it suitable for people with limited mobility. The groundfloor which has two lounges, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and kitchens are accessable with wheelchair but the main lounge and conservatory are on the main floor. The main lounge has log stove for cosey nights in.

Although you are away from it all, you are still wired to the outside world with wifi.

.

If you wish to venture out, there is plenty of places to explore. For dining and drinking, there are plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafes both within walking distance of the property and a bit further afield in Ambleside. If you would prefer a take-away meal there is choice of Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian and English food in Ambleside. Ambleside’s activities include boats (large and small) on Windermere, England’s largest lake, including for example a steamer trip, or there is rowing, canoeing, sailing and motorboats on the lake.

For other activities in the town there are: tennis courts, miniature golf, local bike hire, climbing, walking, cycling and water sports. There are also organized tours and regular buses to explore the surrounding areas. For a rainy day, a few minutes’ walk from the property is Zefferelli's multi-screen cinema to take in a movie, which could perhaps be followed by a meal at their own well regarded vegetarian restaurant. On selected evenings you can also listen to a Jazz band at Zefferelli's while having a drink or a meal.

There are many nearby walks around Ambleside and directly from the front door. This includes the well known Loughrigg which is visible from the garden and is a one of the great low-level Lake District walk while Langdale pikes, further down the valley, is a wonderful high level hike. An even more straightforward walk, directly from the property and taking in two lakes, is along the western bank of Rydal Water then along the shores of Grasmere and back along the eastern shores of both lakes taking in the history of Wordsworth at Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount. With all these walks, along the way, you will find great places for eating and drinking. In short, much of your holiday could be spent in and around Skelwith Bridge, without using your car. If you do want to use the car, however, it will be much rewarded as about twenty minutes’ drive takes you: west to Coniston Water; north to Keswick; south to Hawkshead; or east to Ullswater. Even closer are: Langdale Valley (west); Grasmere (north); and Bowness-on-Windermere (south), which are all about ten minutes’ drive from Skelwith Bridge. For the more adventurous, swimming in the lakes is a popular activity!

We are both keen walkers and have been going to the Lake District for over thirty years. When we saw Greenbank, we fell in love with the setting and decided to buy it.

Very relaxing holiday

  • 4 of 5

The house was very comfortable with lovely views and a nice garden at the back. It was very spacious and we enjoyed sitting in the conservatory. It had the best equipped kitchen we have ever had in a holiday cottage . The location was very good with nice walks from the door and only a few minutes drive to Ambleside. We would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in the upstairs section of the house (High Greenbank) which is spacious and well-equipped. The views are fantastic and we especially enjoyed sitting in the conservatory looking out over beautiful countryside. The house is conveniently located for local walks (we particularly liked walking along to Elterwater and back). It is an easy drive to Ambleside and Coniston. We loved nearby Chesters By the River Cafe and there is also a pub and restaurant in easy walking distance. The views and location made this a great holiday and would make us think about booking again.

Little Greenbank is comfortable and well equipped.

  • 5 of 5

Little Greenbank is the one-bedroom section of the property. It was our second stay there and we were very satisfied with all aspects of the stay.

The house is very comfortable and the kitchen very well equipped.

It is well placed for walking directly from the house or for touring by car. Although the weather was not very good while we were there( it snowed!) it was always pleasurable to return to the warmth and comfort of the house.

We certainly hope to return again.

Location

From the Owner

Langdale Valley is one of our favourite places in the lakedistrict. Outdoor enthusiasts will know why! The beautiful little hamlet of Skelwith Bridge marks the entrance to the Langdale valley and when we saw the setting of Greenbank, set in its own grounds close to Rothay river, we could not think of a better place to be. We hope you agree.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

Greenbank House is an ideal base for walking, with walks available from the doorstep. A different walk could be taken every day for over a week without even getting into the car.

Walks nearby include easy routes to Grasmere and Rydal Water, or more challenging routes on Fairfield and Langdales. Walks to Loughrigg are amongst the owners favourites. The route to Clappersgate give fantastic views of the Langdales. These walks are not taxing but routes along the ridge to Pavey Arc and return along the valley are more testing. Bus services will take walkers up Greater Langdale from where they can walk back!

Facilities are available for washing and drying clothing after a day out in the fells.

Coast/Beach:

Greenbank is on the banks of River Rothay and the shores of Windermere are nearby with cruises over the lake. There are cruises on the Lake to Wray Castle, Far Sawrey, Bowness, Brockhole and Lakeside at the south side of the lake. From Waterhead, you can hire a boat, feed the ducks or enjoy a meal or a drink overlooking the lake. For that special occasion you may wish to hire a skippered yacht. Impulse Charters on Lake Windermere comes highly recommended.

Travel:

Nearest train station: Windermere 5 miles (buses and taxis available)

Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle Airports are approximately 100 miles away (1 hour 45 minutes by car). Manchester Airport has a direct train line link from Windermere Railway Station.

A car is recommended but not essential as there is good access to all bus services in Ambleside.

Distances:

Ambleside 10 minutes walk

Lake Windermere 1km

Rydal Water 1.5km

Grasmere, Langdale Valley, Bowness each 10 minutes drive

Hawskhead, Ullswater, Consiton each 20 minutes drive

Keswick 25 minutes drive

Grizedale Forest and Go Ape 25 minutes drive

Local frequent bus services available

Further Details:

There is reading material and games in the cupboard in the master bedroom. There are also clear guidelines on how to use the utilities in Greenbank such as the washing machine, etc.

There is also some literature on attractions that might be of interest.
