Location

Skelwith Bridge is just 3 miles from Ambleside and Grassmere and 5 miles from Coniston. Located in Great Langdale, offering countless gentle or challenging walks conveniently starting from your door. With 'Chester's By The River', just a short walk and perfect for breakfast or much more, the Skelwith Bridge Hotel is just a ten minute stroll from the house and you also have 'The Drunken Duck' just up the road, which is a firm favorite with all; whether it's a pint of one of the famous 'Barngates' beers or dinner in the restaurant, it really is worth the visit.

The nearby Elterwater hamlet is a delight to behold, and can be reached via a path alongside the tumbling river and within the hamlet is the Britannia Inn - a quintessential Lake District tavern serving great food and real local ale. If you want somewhere to unwind, why not visit the award-winning Langdale Estate where you can enjoy their impressive range of leisure, spa and dining facilities.

Ambleside , offers everything from pub grub to fine dining, Lakeland pubs, jazz bars, live music, cinema etc. It’s the small Lakeland village that is the heart and soul of South Lakeland.

A holiday in Skelwith Bridge takes you away from the hustle and bustle of tourist traps, but places you in an ideal location for exploring. This is also a prime Lake District holiday destination for walking in the Lake District. Some of the most famous Lake District walks begin on your doorstep; you need never take the car off the drive; but if you want to your location just off the A593 makes exploring the wider reaches of the National Park a breeze. For example; follow the road back to Ambleside and the shores of Lake Windermere, then north to Rydal Water and Grasmere, or follow the A593 south to picturesque Coniston.

Whatever the season, and whatever style of holiday you prefer, the Langdale Valley provides blissful seclusion and world class walking, never too far from the Lake District's most vibrant communities.

About Roja

We are keen walkers and climbers and have been going to the Lake District for over thirty years. We fell in love with Greenbank the moment we saw it, and hope you enjoy this sanctuary in the heart of the Lakes just as much as we do.

Roja purchased this house in 2015

Why Roja chose Windermere & Central Lakes

The Langdale Valley is one of our favourite places in the Lake District - outdoor enthusiasts will know why! The beautiful little hamlet of Skelwith Bridge marks the entrance to the Langdale Valley, and Greenbank, set in tranquil and accessible grounds close to Rothay River, could not be a better place to stay.

What makes this house unique

The beautiful gardens and the stunning mountain views allow you to sit back and relax in this large yet homely place, which gives excellent access to plenty of walks through the Lakes. You feel away from it all but at the same time you are just ten minutes' drive from Ambleside with its theatre, restaurants, shops and leisure centre!

Super house with fabulous views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in November. The weather was sunny but very cold however the house is blessed with great central heating as well as a fantastic wood burner. We were super toasty!

There's a great kitchen if you want to cook, but honestly there are numerous great places to eat within minutes of the property.

We were blown away by the huge window in the lounge. Ohh my word, the views, especially the sunsets are just spectacular.

The rest of the house is great too. There's oodles of space, the bathrooms are well appointed and very modern and the bedrooms cosy and very comfortable.

Whenever I'm on holiday I nearly always have an issue with the bed. I find them too hard and unforgiving and I creak out of bed in the morning feeling stiff and sore.

Not in this house though! The bed was fantastic. Not too hard, not too soft but just perfectly comfortable :)

I would definitely stay here again.

Just what the doctor ordered

  • 5 of 5

A weekend away was in order and led us to Greenbank and what a perfect setting just to kick back, relax and enjoy the stunning scenery. A quaint, higgledy-piggledy building with ample parking, it was spacious and well-equipped with everything you need and the view through the large picture window in the lounge is magnificent, especially at sunset. There's a pub and renowned cafe just round the corner if you don't fancy cooking and Ambleside is only a short drive away for a larger selection of eateries. All in all, you can't ask for much more. A second visit is already booked!

A great place to stay over Christmas

  • 5 of 5

We had family to stay over Christmas and Greenbank was perfect for our needs. It is in an excellent location for access to the Langdale valley and surrounding countryside with paths straight from the door and Chester's cafe conveniently just across the bridge! We hired the whole house for 8 of us and it was very spacious with lots of private and communal space so we didn't feel on top of each other at all. David and Roja were very helpful and friendly and though we had a problem with the boiler in lower Greenbank they arranged for a plumber to come out at short notice on Christmas eve. The only down side of our week was the weather but then you can never guarantee that in the lake district! We would definitely recommend the house and the area.

Superb Cottage/s in a Great Location

  • 5 of 5

The cottages are ideal for families and groups who enjoy walking. They are very well appointed so if you want to eat in there is everything required. There is easy access to walks directly from the cottage with the beautiful Little Langdale within easy reach. Elterwater is a short walk away with the a great pub, The Britannia Inn, being an attraction. Over the bridge is the Skelwith Bridge Hotel. Ambleside is just a few miles away to enable you stock up on provisions.

Very relaxing holiday

  • 4 of 5

The house was very comfortable with lovely views and a nice garden at the back. It was very spacious and we enjoyed sitting in the conservatory. It had the best equipped kitchen we have ever had in a holiday cottage . The location was very good with nice walks from the door and only a few minutes drive to Ambleside. We would definitely stay here again.

Special interest holidays:

Greenbank House is an ideal base for walking, with walks available from the doorstep. A different walk could be taken every day for over a week without even getting into the car.

Walks nearby include easy routes to Grasmere and Rydal Water, or more challenging routes on Fairfield and Langdales. Walks to Loughrigg are amongst the owners favourites. The route to Clappersgate give fantastic views of the Langdales. These walks are not taxing but routes along the ridge to Pavey Arc and return along the valley are more testing. Bus services will take walkers up Greater Langdale from where they can walk back!

Facilities are available for washing and drying clothing after a day out in the fells.

Coast/Beach:

Greenbank is on the banks of River Rothay and the shores of Windermere are nearby with cruises over the lake. There are cruises on the Lake to Wray Castle, Far Sawrey, Bowness, Brockhole and Lakeside at the south side of the lake. From Waterhead, you can hire a boat, feed the ducks or enjoy a meal or a drink overlooking the lake. For that special occasion you may wish to hire a skippered yacht. Impulse Charters on Lake Windermere comes highly recommended.

Travel:

Nearest train station: Windermere 5 miles (buses and taxis available)

Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle Airports are approximately 100 miles away (1 hour 45 minutes by car). Manchester Airport has a direct train line link from Windermere Railway Station.

A car is recommended but not essential as there is good access to all bus services in Ambleside.
