About the property

Holiday House in Capileira, High Alpujarras, Andalucia -

Casa de Josefa is a traditional but spacious Berber style house just below the picturesque church in Capileira, nestling in the heart of the friendly local community. Its large lounge and open fire make a comfortable place to relax in the evenings. From its roof terrace and lounge there are stunning views across the Poqueira valley, up to the high Sierra mountains, snow-covered for much of the year, down to the Mediterranean coast. The many walkers, who use Capileira as their base, contribute to the lively atmosphere of the town. From the front door you can walk down to the next village (Bubion) for coffee; or down to the Poqueira river (1 hour) or across the valley and up into the mountains. A walker's paradise. For those on wheels a short drive up to the entrance to the National Park will reward you with views of the Mediterranean and even the African coastline and mountains on a clear day. There are plenty of activities, including mountain biking, horse riding, Flamenco courses, climbing , art classes...

About Elena & Thierry

We are Elena and Thierry.

Elena is Spanish-Italian and Thierry is Belgian.

We are enthusiasts of the mountain and the journeys, especially those by bicycle. It was during an exploratory climbing expedition of the sites in Andalusia in 2006 that we visited the Alpujarra and its three Berber villages perched on the south side of the Sierra Nevada. It took just one day to realise that Capileira was going to become our pied-à-terre. We have been settled here since enjoying a happy and peaceful life with our 2 children, and our dog.

Elena & Thierry purchased this house in 2014

Why Elena & Thierry chose Sierra Nevada Area

We went climbing in Capileira site and fell in love with the kindness of the people, the village with its traditional Berber houses and the crystal clear atmosphere to breath at this elevation of over 1500 metres.

What makes this house unique

Casa de Josefa (which took its name from the Canadian lady who renovated it) is ideally situated in the village, with good access to the car park, the shops and main square, yet occupying a quiet area in the streets just below the church. Capileira is a wonderful base - cooler in the summer than lower down the mountains or at the coast. Yet the Mediterranean beaches or the exciting city of Granada can be easily reached in an hour by car.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a fabulous time and we keep very fond memories of our time in your house. Hope to return one day.

Our trip to your house in Capileira was thoroughly enjoyable. Capileira was a great base; couldn't believe how many small supermercados, bakeries and bars there were for such a small place. The house was much larger than we were expecting. Lovely to have the french windows, balcony and roof terrace, watching car lights slowly weaving their way down the opposite hillside at night to various Cortijo and the local cat population snoozing on roofs below.

We couldn't have predicted how enjoyable the stay in Casa da Josefa was going to be. The house is full of character yet provides you with everything you need. The moments on the roof terrace were incredibly peaceful after a day of walking, particularly with a glass of sherry in one hand and book in the other. Capileira provides you with everything you may wish for, including a gourmet restaurant with very affordable prices.

Really great place to stay in Capileira!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Elenas and Thierry lovely Berber house. It is extremely clean and feels very homely. The furnishings are good quality and you are provided with everything you could possibly need. The views from the lounge windows are wonderful of the magnificent Poqueiro valley. Although the village is lively at the weekends the position of this house, situated on the side of the gorge, provides a real haven of peace, with constant birdsong and the tinkleing bells of goatherds. It's a great spot for walkers as you can set straight off from the house on the magnificent walks. The scenery is fabulous, the air fresh, spring flowers everywhere plus blue skies. What more could you want? This was our second visit to the magnificent Alpujarras. We will definitely be returning.

Beautiful property, very convenient location in Capileira with easily accessible hiking. Stunning views over the Alpujarros mountains from the rooftop patio. Ideal for a family of 4. Comfortable lounge with wood burning stove. Very lucky to have found such a beautiful home. Thank you.

Beautiful house and view!

  • 5 of 5

What a place. The view is absolutely breathtaking. We stayed in several places over 3 months in Spain, all of them wonderful, but this house and view were my favourite. We were with our 2 young children (ages 3 and 5) and the house was great for them. The only thing was the rooftop terrace - it's not safe for young children to go up on their own. The town, Capileira, was great with lots of amenities. Parking was easy. There's a playground right next to the car park that the kids loved. We did many local walks from Capileira and in the area. Everyone in the family loved it. We hope to be back!

Comfortable casa with spectacular views

  • 5 of 5

We loved this comfortable casa! It was very well equipped and the views from the lounge (and roof terrace) were just amazing! The bedrooms were warm and the bed super-comfy. We appreciated the warm brushed-cotton bedding and extra blankets, as it was quite cool in February when we were there. The fire in the lounge warmed the bathroom too by a clever vent system. Firewood was available to purchase just a couple of doors down from Casa Josefa. The village of a Capiliera is very pretty and interesting just to stroll around. However, it has all we needed for our holiday in terms of a small supermarket, bakery, pharmacy and some lovely restaurants. We would definitely stay in Capiliera at Casa Josefa again as it was a great base for walking, our main reason for holidaying at this time of year. I wish we could have stayed for longer this time - thank you Elena and family for making us feel so welcome.

Perfect get away

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic stay in this quiet hillside corner of Spain. The property was all that we had hoped for and more. Great location, set in a quiet street but also close to the buzz of the village with great restaurants and tapas bars. Breakfast on the roof terrace with fresh bread from the bakery and views over the valley was a particular highlight. Plenty to do on the doorstep including local walks to mountain rivers and longer walks high up into the mountains. Grenada also an easy day trip away. Elena and Thierry were incredibly welcoming and provided expert local knowledge and recommendations. Highly recommended!

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOPS NON-TOXIC INTAGLIO offered by Henrik Bøegh, are organized each year (see more details on his web site)

The nearest beach that we like can be reached within an hour from the house - a distance of 50km. Once at the coast there are many beaches to explore, some relatively secluded mid-week or outside the peak months. We can supply more information at your request.

Malaga airport is 145km (2 hours), Almeria airport is 200km (2 hours) and Granada airport is 45km (1 hour). Car hire is available at the airports. Although public transport is available in the Alpujarras, a car is an asset if you would like to explore more of the region during your stay.

Distances:

With a car you can explore Las Alpujarras on a circular drive (takes 3-4 hours). From Capileira you can reach Granada in an hour; Cordoba (2 hours) and Ronda (needs an overnight stop). The countryside on these trips is magical. Granada, in particular, rewards a day-trip to see the beautiful Alhambra palace and to enjoy the Moorish culinary delights in the old part of the city.

Further Details:

Capileira is the highest of the 3 beautiful white-housed towns of the Poqueira valley, dominated by the peak of Mulhacen in the high Sierra. It is a focal point for walking of all grades and, if preferred, a regular bus service takes visitors high up into the Sierra Nevada National Park from which they can reach the summit more easily.

Capileira and Bubion are unusual in the region in having a number of cafes and restaurants offering some exciting and exotic tastes, as well as more traditional fare of good quality, in a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.

There is plenty of scope for activities in Las Alpujarras, from horse-riding to paragliding, climbing, hiking or Flamenco courses while those who like to rest can easily spend a day relaxing in the mountain air at swimming pool at Bubion and Pitres, about 15 minutes drive from Capileira. For any who dare four or six hour walks in the high mountains, from Capileira is possible to reach the Refugio Poqueria and next day the top of the Peninsula Iberica, the peak Mulhacen or follow the GR 7 walks. We can recommend several interesting venues for your stay on request.
