Holiday House in Capileira, High Alpujarras, Andalucia -
Casa de Josefa is a traditional but spacious Berber style house just below the picturesque church in Capileira, nestling in the heart of the friendly local community. Its large lounge and open fire make a comfortable place to relax in the evenings. From its roof terrace and lounge there are stunning views across the Poqueira valley, up to the high Sierra mountains, snow-covered for much of the year, down to the Mediterranean coast. The many walkers, who use Capileira as their base, contribute to the lively atmosphere of the town. From the front door you can walk down to the next village (Bubion) for coffee; or down to the Poqueira river (1 hour) or across the valley and up into the mountains. A walker's paradise. For those on wheels a short drive up to the entrance to the National Park will reward you with views of the Mediterranean and even the African coastline and mountains on a clear day. There are plenty of activities, including mountain biking, horse riding, Flamenco courses, climbing , art classes...

About the Owner
We are Elena and Thierry.
Elena is Spanish-Italian and Thierry is Belgian.
We are enthusiasts of the mountain and the journeys, especially those by bicycle. It was during an exploratory climbing expedition of the sites in Andalusia in 2006 that we visited the Alpujarra and its three Berber villages perched on the south side of the Sierra Nevada. It took just one day to realise that Capileira was going to become our pied-à-terre. We have been settled here since enjoying a happy and peaceful life with our 2 children, and our dog.

We had a fabulous time and we keep very fond memories of our time in your house. Hope to return one day.

Our trip to your house in Capileira was thoroughly enjoyable. Capileira was a great base; couldn't believe how many small supermercados, bakeries and bars there were for such a small place. The house was much larger than we were expecting. Lovely to have the french windows, balcony and roof terrace, watching car lights slowly weaving their way down the opposite hillside at night to various Cortijo and the local cat population snoozing on roofs below.

We couldn't have predicted how enjoyable the stay in Casa da Josefa was going to be. The house is full of character yet provides you with everything you need. The moments on the roof terrace were incredibly peaceful after a day of walking, particularly with a glass of sherry in one hand and book in the other. Capileira provides you with everything you may wish for, including a gourmet restaurant with very affordable prices.

Perfect get away
Fantastic stay in this quiet hillside corner of Spain. The property was all that we had hoped for and more. Great location, set in a quiet street but also close to the buzz of the village with great restaurants and tapas bars. Breakfast on the roof terrace with fresh bread from the bakery and views over the valley was a particular highlight. Plenty to do on the doorstep including local walks to mountain rivers and longer walks high up into the mountains. Grenada also an easy day trip away. Elena and Thierry were incredibly welcoming and provided expert local knowledge and recommendations. Highly recommended!
special house in a special village
such a lovely village property with glorious views down the valley beyond. Very well equipped, comfortable and with a brilliant roof-top terrace. Village peaceful but all facilities available and easy access to stunning mountain or valley walks. Owners are really friendly and available if anything is needed or local advice required. Great restaurants and cafes in the village and there are other villages in easy walking distance that offer similar options. There is a mountain bus that goes in to the heart of the seirra nevada to enable a brilliant day out in the mountains. Highest peak on mainland Spain is in striking distance - go for it, it is worth it.
Lovely atmoshere and location with everything we could need. Helpful information and warm welcome.
The house had everything we needed to be comfortable, including wonderful views and a rooftop terrace. The amenities were perfect. The owners were welcoming, friendly and helpful and the house is in a very convenient location. We didn't want to leave!
Beautiful house in a perfect location.
We were delighted with the quiet location of this lovely, traditional house, on the edge of the village with stunning views out over the poquiera gorge. The views can be enjoyed from the sitting room, roof top terrace and the main bedroom. The house is clean, comfortable and cosy with a log fire for the chilly times of the year. The kitchen is well equipped if you want to cook, however, there are plenty of great places to eat out within a short if steep climb into the centre of the village! Our favourite was the pizzeria in the centre by the church.
Thank you Elena and Thierry you were the perfect hosts and spent a lot of time making sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay, and advising us on local walks and knowledge.
This is a great spot for hiking, bird watching and simply enjoying the peace and beauty of nature at it`s best.
We would recommend casa Josefa unreservedly, and intend to return next year!
Perfect house, in a perfect location.
This beautiful, traditional alpujarran house is perfectly located, being central, but on a quiet side street with spectacular uninterrupted views of the poqueira gorge. The perfect place to relax and unwind. We'll definitely be back!
Delightful Berber House
We spent three days in this delightful Berber House in Capileira.Thierry and Elena were really helpful, sending on directions on how to find the house, and useful infomation about the village, parking, shops, restaurants etc.
The house itself was full of character and a cool haven from the sun after our days out walking. Wonderful views over the Poqueira Gorge.
The kitchen was very well equipped, rooms were clean and spacious and beds very comfortable.
We would love to come back here and wouldn't hesitate in recommending this house to friends and family.

Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
Painting courses are offered by Jaime Aviles, an local painter living in Capileira. The local scenery and the white houses provide an abundance of subjects to inspire you. There may be opportunities to join in with the local painting group in their excursions into the mountains.
INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOPS NON-TOXIC INTAGLIO offered by Henrik Bøegh, are organized each year (see more details on his web site)
The opportunity to go horse riding or mountain biking locally as well as climbing in
a climbing area at 5’ walking from Casa de Josefa, with 5 sectors and more than 100 small routes well know by Thierry who can provides you with more information.
Flamenco dance classes as part of a relaxing holiday with Flamenco school 'La Fuente' offers you a unique experience.
The nearest beach that we like can be reached within an hour from the house - a distance of 50km. Once at the coast there are many beaches to explore, some relatively secluded mid-week or outside the peak months. We can supply more information at your request.
Malaga airport is 145km (2 hours), Almeria airport is 200km (2 hours) and Granada airport is 45km (1 hour). Car hire is available at the airports. Although public transport is available in the Alpujarras, a car is an asset if you would like to explore more of the region during your stay.
With a car you can explore Las Alpujarras on a circular drive (takes 3-4 hours). From Capileira you can reach Granada in an hour; Cordoba (2 hours) and Ronda (needs an overnight stop). The countryside on these trips is magical. Granada, in particular, rewards a day-trip to see the beautiful Alhambra palace and to enjoy the Moorish culinary delights in the old part of the city.
Capileira is the highest of the 3 beautiful white-housed towns of the Poqueira valley, dominated by the peak of Mulhacen in the high Sierra. It is a focal point for walking of all grades and, if preferred, a regular bus service takes visitors high up into the Sierra Nevada National Park from which they can reach the summit more easily.
Capileira and Bubion are unusual in the region in having a number of cafes and restaurants offering some exciting and exotic tastes, as well as more traditional fare of good quality, in a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.
There is plenty of scope for activities in Las Alpujarras, from horse-riding to paragliding, climbing, hiking or Flamenco courses while those who like to rest can easily spend a day relaxing in the mountain air at swimming pool at Bubion and Pitres, about 15 minutes drive from Capileira. For any who dare four or six hour walks in the high mountains, from Capileira is possible to reach the Refugio Poqueria and next day the top of the Peninsula Iberica, the peak Mulhacen or follow the GR 7 walks. We can recommend several interesting venues for your stay on request.

From the Owner
“Casa de Josefa (which took its name from the Canadian lady who renovated it) is ideally situated in the village, with good access to the car park, the shops and main square, yet occupying a quiet area in the streets just below the church. Capileira is a wonderful base - cooler in the summer than lower down the mountains or at the coast. Yet the Mediterranean beaches or the exciting city of Granada can be easily reached in an hour by car.”
