About the property

3 bedroom, 3 bathroom/WC Prime Canal-Side Location In Historic Town, Perfect for Walking, Cycling, Boating and Sight-Seeing

The house can be accessed at street level and also through its garden. It benefits from a sought after, river-side setting, and yet it is just two minutes walk from Josselin's medieval heart, with its many restaurants, creperies and bars. Fresh baguettes, cakes and croissants are available from a boulangerie just seconds away. Our newly renovated and decorated townhouse has a beautiful bedroom and bathroom suite in a spacious, beamed room, across the entire top floor, two further double bedrooms and a shower room on the middle floor and a fully-equipped kitchen, sitting room with English TV and WC on the ground floor. The lower ground floor houses a utility room and provides access to the garden and river beyond. There is also secure parking for a car and bicycles, with further parking directly outside the rear of the house. The Nantes-Brest canal is at the bottom of the secure gated garden.

About Ruth Corbett

We are a London based family, and we spend as much time as possible here, in our gorgeous French retreat! We usually bring our labradoodle, Scruffy, who is in her element here, never happier than when she's swimming in the Nante Brest canal. We live in north London and work in the centre, so our little house is a wonderful alternative to city living.

Ruth Corbett purchased this house in 2013

Why Ruth Corbett chose Ploermel area

We fell in love with Josselin in early 2013, after a flying visit, and bought our house that same summer. The minute we swept around from the main street onto the canal road and took in that sensational view, we knew we wanted a place here. The river, the chateau and our future home were right there in front of us.

Josselin has the lot in terms of traditional French charm, with its mix of cafes and quality restaurants, interesting little shops, chateau tours and Saturday market, as well as colourful annual festivals and holy days, gorgeous walks and opportunities for boating and cycling.

It's a beautiful town, bursting with history and culture. There are numerous places to discover and explore nearby, from the ancient megaliths at Carnac to stunning secret sandy beaches on the south coast and enchanting forests in all directions.

What makes this house unique

Our house has the advantage of two entrances: at the front, on the street side (with mouthwateringly good boulangerie seconds away), and at the back, through the garden, on the river side, where cars can be parked. A delightful promenade here is home to charming river-side cafes and bars.

The house's location is highly sought after and the views from our windows and garden of the river, and the ancient and beautiful 11th century church, on the far side of the river, are hard to beat.

With useful local shops and amenities a short walk away, and with the peace and tranquillity a river-side setting offers, it's an exceptional spot.

Townhouse in Josselin, Brittany

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect, and exactly as described, and the location is superb. Leaving from the front door you can walk to the centre of town in five minutes, while leaving from the back door you descend through the delightful garden to reach the lovely river walk with views of the chateau. The rooms were spotless and very well presented, and the beds comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and there was plenty of storage. We occupied the top floor, and loved the old beams and uneven oak floor, which reveal that this house is older than it looks from the street. I loved sitting in splendour in the big bath under the eaves, but my husband preferred the conventional shower downstairs. We all felt very much at home here, and hope to return some day.

Lovely house in a lovely village.

  • 5 of 5

The house was lovely and the owner very welcoming and very helpful, answering all my questions in the lead up to the holiday very promptly. The village is very nice with many restaurants and a few bars. We had a fabulous time and would recommend.

French charm.

  • 4 of 5

The traditional French house is in a great spot close to the centre of the town and the canal and Chateau. Out of the main season some restaurants and bars close on odd days and can catch you out but there are some good restaurants to enjoy. It's worth calling to the supermarkets on the edge of town on your way to the house as there are no shops in the town to purchase even the most basic items. Market day is Saturday and is over by 2pm so be early. We had a very relaxed stay and if you wish to have a chill out holiday and enjoy good food it's a great place, there is a bakery directly opposite the house that is fantastic.

A characterful house conveniently situated in an attractive town.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our two week stay. Josselin is an attractive town with a good variety of restaurants and bars. (Always an essential for our self catering holidays!!) Although we were just a couple, the house is plenty big enough with sufficient amenities to comfortably accommodate three couples (although for our stay there were chairs only enough for four - maybe more are provided for larger parties). Access to the garden is a little awkward but it provides an excellent view across the canal and valley. We would certainly consider returning.

Lovely house in a fairly tale location

  • 5 of 5

This riverside house was enchanting from top to bottom. Beautifully decorated and full of personality, it felt like a home from home, but better! Filled with interesting artworks and quirky furnishings, plus a fabulous top floor ensuite and a pretty garden, we felt extremely lucky to land here.

There is a boulangerie directly opposite the front door, while at the back, from the sitting room and bedroom windows, are stunning views of the river, chateau and an idyllic 11th century chapel. Great restaurants and cafes, a historical town centre, wonderful Saturday market and five days of sunshine to boot. We'll be back!

Lovely town with good restaurants, good Saturday market, great location on the river for walking

  • 4 of 5

Kitchen was well equipped with everything you needed for cooking . Upper bedroom was quite hot on warm days and the central heat wasn't working on the cold days. Outdoor space will be lovely when the patio is completed. Living room is minimally furnished.

Location

Coast/Beach:

Brittany's beautiful south and south-west coastal resorts are about 45 minutes drive away and you can be on the Ile aux Moines in an hour or so.

A large swimming lake with beach area, Lac du Duc, in Ploermel, is 15 minutes drive and there is an indoor swimming pool 20 minutes drive away.

Travel:

How to get there

Dinard and Rennes airports are just over an hour's drive from Josselin. Nantes and Brest airports, about 2 hours. (Car hire is recommended.) The channel port of St Malo is a 1 hr 30 drive. Alternatives ferry crossings are Roscoff, Cherbourg and Caen. Calais & Boulogne are around 6 hrs drive.

Distances:

Brittany's sandy shores, jagged coasts, legendary forests, mysterious menhirs and megaliths and flower-laden canals are easily accessible from Josselin. Vannes, gateway to Golfe du Morbihan with its historical centre, shops and port is 40 mins drive, the Forest of Paimpont (Broceliande) is 30 minutes drive, Rennes, Brittany's capital, is under an hour away and medieval Rochefort-en-Terre is 40 minutes drive.

Further Details:

The Basilique Notre Dame du Roncier stands in the heart of town, surrounded by pavement cafés, bars and restaurants, as well as the Mairie, banks, post office, boulangeries and other shops and services.

On Saturday mornings, a colourful market stretches through the main streets, selling a varied selection of local produce and local crafts. There is another in Malestroit, 20km from Josselin, on Thursday mornings. On the outskirts of the town are two large supermarkets with petrol stations.

Josselin is well situated for cycling and canoeing along the Nantes/Brest canal and bikes and canoes can be hired locally.

In nearby Vannes there is a fine indoor swimming pool with water slides, which is popular with those with young children.

Ploermel with more restaurants, shops, a large lake with beach, and a 9 hole golf course is 15 minutes drive from Josselin
