About the Owner

Hello, we’re Trudie and Steve. We were both brought-up in the West Country and have now returned to renovate an 18th Century farmhouse on the edge of the Somerset Levels just outside Taunton, having moved back here from West Sussex in 2012.

We’ve both had stressful business careers that involved huge amounts of tiring travel and relentless pressure. We bought Rosecot in 2007 as a bolt-hole from it all. Rosecot was love at first sight and we offered on it within an hour of seeing it.

The feeling of being at home that we got when we first walked into the kitchen sealed the decision. We love the way the week’s stress simply evaporates over breakfast in front of the fire (Steve is of course be sent down to light it). We have since come to appreciate our fantastic neighbours (and now good friends) as well all that North Devon has to offer.

Stunning rural setting

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived it was an amazing experience. The cottage was beautiful and well equipped. Everything we needed for the week and more was available for our use. We received the most beautiful welcome basket on arrival which we all enjoyed. The countryside was breathtaking and we walked with the dog for miles every day. The location of the cottage was perfect and close to shops and nearby towns and villages. We had an amazing week in the country and caught up on some much needed sleep.

lovely cottage with eye for detail

  • 5 of 5

Rosecot is a lovely cottage (including low ceiling :) ). We really appreciated the biscuits, tea and milk after the long trip. The owners have thought of everything. there is a big map with information about the area including some very useful maps. The kitchen has everything you need and extra's such as handsoap, detergent etc . The living room is really cosy. The bathroom towels are almost too luxurious.

We really enjoyed our week there, both the rainy and the sunny days. We found that the Lidl in Great Torrington has evertything you need, including fresh bread.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much for taking the time to write a review. Glad you had a nice stay. We try to equip the cottage with day to day essentials such as hand soap and kitchen foil so guests don't have to worry about bringing them just in case they are needed.

What a beautiful cottage, both inside and out! We were more than impressed! We arrived to find a very welcoming display of treats for all the family set out on the kitchen dining table - there was even something nice for our little dog to enjoy! The cottage is very well presented and equipped with everything you could possibly need for a perfect holiday. The bed linen was crisp and fresh and the towels were amazingly big and soft - a real feeling of luxury! The owners very kindly provided a comfortable fold away bed for our youngest son, including bedding, so that he didn't have to share with his older brother (a blessing for our sanity!). There was even a lovely bed, blanket and towel provided specifically for our dog! We honestly couldn't fault anything, although there's only one thing I would point out, and it's not a fault but more to do with the character of this beautiful old cottage, and that is the low ceilings and doors. Not a problem for most but my eldest son is 6'2" and still growing! He had a problem standing upright in a few areas of the cottage - mainly the kitchen, This certainly wouldn't put us off visiting the cottage again or recommending it to others.

During our stay we visited quite a few interesting towns and villages - we particularly liked Ilfracombe (a busy seaside resort with an interesting lifeboat station that is often open to the public to look around during the busy holiday months). We also liked Clovelly (a very pretty village with a lovely little harbor and a couple of bar/restaurants, plus a visitor centre. We would advise you to wear suitable shoes as the paths are both steep and cobbled and can be slippy if it's wet - we saw plenty of people struggling to get around in flip flops!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive and well structured review. We try very hard to present the cottage well and to make guests' stays as enjoyable as possible. It is very pleasing to get feedback such as this. The point about ceiling heights is well made and we will make sure it is mentioned in the cottage advertisment. The lowest parts are in the kitchen (where the floor slopes from back to front) and the main bedroom (where the ceiling dips over the bed). Steve (who is 6'4") can stand upright in all other rooms. Taller people will however get used to ducking through doorways. We are always happy to answer questions from perspective guests if they need help deciding whether the cottage is suitable for them. Many thanks again.

Kingscott is a great base for exploring or alternatively somewhere to relax in the privates garden or in front of the fire and do nothing in particular. It’s in a rural area with steep rolling hills and a dairy farm on the edge of the hamlet. There are various circular walks from the hamlet to nearby villages and along valleys with their meandering streams.

Great Torrington is 3 miles away and still has the feel of an old fashioned high street with butchers, bakers and grocers, plus a thriving local theatre and walks around the common and river.

Occasional cyclists will enjoy the Tarka Trail which follows an old train line (and is therefore reasonably flat) along the River Torridge to Bideford, Barnstaple and beyond. More serious cyclists will enjoy the challenge of the steep hills and peaceful country lanes. There is a secure bike store at Rosecot for guests to use.

From the Owner

We love the tranquillity at Kingscott. The lanes through the hamlet lead nowhere in particular so there is only occasional through traffic. Walking down the lane from the cottage with our rottie-cross Jess first thing in the morning, with mist through the valley and utter silence all round, is something special. Looking up on a clear night the vast array of stars that can be seen in the absence of significant light pollution is breath-taking. There are simply not many places like Kingscott left in the modern world.
