This picturesque market town spans the River Arun between the South Downs National Park and the Sussex coastline.

Arundel is dominated by its Castle, one of the great treasure houses of England and is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk.

This charming terraced Victorian house makes a perfect retreat for those wanting to enjoy this old historic town, with its excellent variety of restaurants, pubs, bars, tea rooms, antique shops and to explore the many attractions of Sussex and the South Coast.

Riverside walks are only 2 minutes walk away, and beautiful unspoilt beaches just 4 miles drive. Arundel Railway Station is just 12 minutes walk away on the main Victoria line just over an hour into London.

This deceptively spacious house makes the perfect holiday base for 4 people, plus an infant and up to two dogs are very welcome. (Dogs are not to be left unattended).

Arundel is a small market town 50 miles from London near the sea on the South Coast of England.

Arundel Castle, which regularly hosts exciting jousting and days of historical interest for all the family, is a wonderful place to visit with tours around the castle and beautiful walled gardens. www.arundelcastle.org/whats-on/events. There is a museum by the main entrance to the Castle and the imposing Arundel Cathedral & St Nicholas Church to visit.

Whether you just enjoy a gentle stroll or are a seasoned hiker there are breath-taking walks through Arundel Park which begin at the top the hill in town and go on for miles over the South Downs.

Swanbourne Lake, Mill Lane, is a beautiful boating lake where you can hire rowing boats or visit the Arundel Wetland Centre which has a multitude of bird wildlife www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/arundel.

There is also Mill Road Leisure Centre an 18-hole putting green (mini golf), tennis courts and Café, in Mill Road near the Castle main gates.

If you enjoy swimming the Lido open air swimming pool is on Queen Street or for Horse Riding Arundel Riding Centre is in Park Place.

Boat trips leave from the bridge in the town centre, or you can just sit in one of the cafes overlooking the water and watch the world go by.

Arundel has some wonderful festivals including vibrant Arundel Festival and Art Trail in August http://www.arundelgallerytrail.co.uk and the romantic Arundel by Candlelight in December http://www.arundel.org.uk/arundel-by-candlelight.

Arundel is very small and intimate: you don’t even need to get in the car as nowhere in town is further than about 10 minutes walk! There are fantastic antique shops all over town and many restaurants, cafes and one-off boutiques. There are shops and activities for all the family to enjoy.

If you are looking for a little culture Petworth Park is home to the National Trust’s finest art collection and a vast deer park landscaped by Capability Brown www.nationaltrust.org.uk/petworth-house.

There are Roman villas at Bignor and Fishbourne or the Weald & Downland Outdoor Museum which has historic houses and buildings from 13th Century to Victorian times for you to explore.

For the more mechanically minded Amberley Working Museum is a great step back through time.

Goodwood is a huge draw to the area and their special events include Glorious Goodwood, The Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival www.goodwood.com. Fontwell Racecourse is even closer for regular race meetings.

For afternoon/evening entertainment Chichester Festival Theatre and the Minerva Theatre has a wealth of highly acclaimed plays.

In Portsmouth there is a huge historic dockyard where you can go aboard old warships and ships dating back to 16th Century. From Portsmouth you can also take a hovercraft over to the Isle of Wight.

For a great day out shopping and to soak up the seaside atmosphere Brighton is a large and vibrant town.

About the Owner

My name is Jo Brown, I have lived in Arundel for 50 years since 1966 when my family moved to Arundel from Middlesex.

We would drive through Arundel on our way to visit our Grandparents living in Elmer Sands, and would regularly spend happy days in Arundel.

I work running my home as a Holiday Home and as a Sales/Administrator at the Arundel Carpet Company, in Arundel.

I am fortunate enough to live in one of the prettiest villages in West Sussex, steeped in history and with wonderful walks, tea rooms, antique shops & pubs. Growing up in Arundel most of my time was spent at the local Riding Stables, hacking across the beautiful South Downs and stunning countryside.

I am always available with help and advice to make your stay in Arundel and at The River House a pleasant experience.

Beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful visit and stay at Jo Brown's river house cottage. It was very well equipped and had everything we needed. Jo was very easy to deal with and answered any of our questions promptly. The house is a lovely modern (inside) Victorian. The weather was beautiful and we spent many hours in the beautiful backyard garden. Arundel has everything one needed and is just a short walk. After four weeks stay it was difficult for us to leave. Hope to be able to visit this part of England again.

Thanks again Jo for everything,

Molly and Bill

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We chose The River House for it's location, good write up, dog friendly and log fire. It didn't disappoint! Then house is very charming and homely but still gives the feeling of being on holiday. It was clean, tidy and we didn't want for anything. Arundel itself is such a lovely place and also a great base for visiting so many other areas. We would love to return!

Attractive homely accommodation

  • 5 of 5

The property was beautifully finished with nice furniture and lovely pictures on the walls. It was very clean, well maintained and well equipped. The owner was extremely nice and approachable, although we did not meet, she responded to queries we had. The excellent description of the property meant that we knew what to expect. I have already recommended this property to friends and relatives, and feel that the standard of this property in all respects was excellent. Beirne

A very comfortable stay in Arundel.

  • 5 of 5

As soon as we opened the door we were delighted with the beautiful house, it has everything you can wish for a very comfortable stay. Clean, warm and with all the equipment provided for a self catering holiday.

We would recommend it to friends and family and consider it for another stay any time.

It has so much to offer in the surrounding area for visiting, Petworth house, Weald and Downland Open Air Museum and Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre to name but a few.

Lots of good eating places if you don't want to cook so all round a thoroughly attractive place to stay.

Beautiful house, warm welcome

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the River House with our two young children and would thoroughly recommend it. The house is very easy to live in, tastefully decorated, homely with a very well provisioned kitchen. It was also full of useful things from DVDs to recipe books and kept immaculately clean. The garden is a great addition. Great for kids, dogs or outside dining. The owner was very friendly and easy to deal with, and did everything she could to make our stay a comfortable one. We'd definitely stay here again!

From the Owner

The River House is within 5 minutes walk of the town centre, and 2 minutes to the riverbank walks. Excellent for many Arundel walks and all amenities. The benefits to the River House are that it is deceptively spacious with an open fire and not overlooked at the back of the property by other houses, it backs onto a horses field and the River Arun. Unlike town parking which has restricted time zones and pay town car parks, street parking in Ford Road is easy and never a problem.
