It is equipped to a very high standard to ensure your perfect Dordogne holiday! On the ground floor : It has a bright and sunny, well equipped country-style kitchen/diner, with farmhouse table seating eight, and French doors leading onto the sunny courtyard. The large separate lounge, with log-burning feature fireplace, has sumptuous sofas and benefits from English satellite TV. French doors lead onto a shady covered terrace. There are 2 double bedrooms, one with en-suite shower room: a family bathroom, and separate toilet. On the first floor : There is a further double bedroom, a twin bedroom, and another toilet and shower. Setting : This charming house is nestled in two acres of land with oak woodland to the rear and open meadow in front stretching down towards the river. The 12m x 4m heated swimming pool is set in its own large sun terrace, with a wonderful view of the Chateau. A perfect place to relax and soak up the sun! Don't let the picture on Google Earth fool you - it must have been taken at dawn! The pool is bathed in sunshine from mid-morning until sundown! For dining al fresco, there are two terraces - one by the pool, benefiting from lovely dappled shade; the other a covered terrace to the rear of the house, ideal for eating or simply relaxing in the shade. Both enjoy beautiful views over the countryside. Le Chause Haut really is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy your holiday with family or friends. The owners live in the cottage next door so are just a few minutes away should you require any advice or assistance. Surroundings : The house overlooks the beautiful Vézère Valley, and sits at the end of a private drive which winds gently up from the river. The little village of Thonac with its well stocked shop, restaurant and bar, is less than a mile away. The charming market town of Montignac and the famous Lascaux caves are just a ten minute drive to the north, and the pre-historic troglodyte fortress of La Roque Saint-Christophe a ten minute drive to the South. You will be spoilt for choice for places to visit and things to do! The medieval town of Sarlat; Les Eyzies, the European centre of Pre-History; and several of the Plus Beaux Villages de France including St Leon sur Vézère, Beynac, Castelnaud, and Domme, are within a twenty mile radius of the house. Other wonderful attractions in the immediate area include pre-historic parks and caves; chateaux and gardens; and magnificent castles dating back to the Hundred Years War. The many and varied activities on the doorstep include canoeing, horse-riding, walking, cycling and paragliding. There are also many attractions such as an aquarium, a treetop adventure park and a heritage theme park. To name them all would need a book - the list is endless....! Those looking to experience the gastronomic delights of the region will find a nearby market on every day of the week offering the very best that local producers have to offer. There are many opportunities to discover the secrets of production and sample the fine foods and wine that this area is famous for - confit de canard, foie gras, gateau noix, regional cheeses and Bergerac wines to name but a few. There is an abundance of local restaurants to suit every taste and budget, ranging from riverside cafés to haute cuisine. PLEASE NOTE : The pool is available for use from May to September, and will be heated throughout the Summer Season (May 28th to September 17th). It may be possible to arrange for heating outside of these dates at a supplementary charge. Please enquire at booking stage.

About David Poole

We have been taking our family holidays in the Perigord Noir for the last ten years. Back in 2012 we decided that the time was right to buy our own place, and thus began a two-year search for the perfect holiday house based on all the knowledge we acquired during that time.

As soon as we saw Le Chause Haut we knew that this was the house for us, as it was in the perfect location for a holiday in the Dordogne.

Our experiences have also allowed us to equip and furnish the house to the standards you would expect to make your stay both comfortable and memorable.

We are sure that once you have seen this part of the Dordogne for yourselves, like us, you will want to return again and again.

David Poole purchased this house in 2014

Guestbook comments from the owner

It was a real treat to catch up with our old friends Dave and Lorraine again, it was as if we had only missed them for a short while.

A superb house and wonderfully decked out, and in a great location.

If you want a grand day out and are not scared of an hours effort get yourself down to Beynac.

The ultimate trip is to La Roque Gageac and then on to Domme.

Thanks again

excellent, home from home !

David & Lorraine are the perfect hosts - very welcoming and made us feel right at home, the house was better than it's pictures and had everything that we needed for a superb holiday. Wish we could have stayed longer. Well positioned as there is plenty to see and do in the area, if you can tear yourself away from the beautiful pool.

wonderful french country holiday

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful five days at this lovely, quiet house tucked up on the hill overlooking the valley. Our hosts, David and Lorraine were a pleasure to work with from my initial inquiry to getting us settled on our arrival to answering our questions about local attractions. The house is in a beautiful location and we made full use of the pool and outdoor patio spaces. The bedrooms were spacious, the kitchen was well equipped and the lounge had a nice selection of books and games. The town of Montignac is an easy 10 minute drive and is full of lovely shops and restaurants. We would highly recommend this property and hope to return again.

The description of Le Chause Haut on the website was extremely accurate and from the moment we arrived we fell in love with the Vezere valley and the ideal position of the property - especially the views of the chateau. We loved the fact it was a typically French house but with all the comforts of home- an extremely well equipped kitchen, Sky TV, Internet, good selection of games(both indoor and outdoor),DVD's and books to read plus a vast array of information about the local area.We loved the pool area especially watching the sun set from there and the fact that there were numerous seating areas to choose from. Dave and Lorraine were the perfect hosts with great knowledge of the area and always on hand if we needed anything. Highly recommend canoeing on the Vezere(much quieter than the Dordogne), the night market in Saint Leon, the lake at Tamnies and le roc de st Christophe. A relaxing family holiday and we can't wait to return.

Superb !

  • 5 of 5

It’s now a month since my family and I stayed at Le Chause Haut and we have already booked to go back again next year – this time for two weeks! I cannot recommend this gite highly enough, picturesque, tranquil, and as relaxing as you need it to be. Dave and Lorraine are the perfect hosts and the property is decorated and furnished to the highest standard. Although it looks small from the outside, the rooms are cool and spacious and there are lots of places to sit and enjoy the views both inside and outside. We did venture out around the area but would have been quite happy to laze around the large sparkling pool and, although we visited a couple of local restaurants, most evenings were spent on the courtyard terrace at the back of the house. There is plenty to do within a short drive and we visited prehistoric caves, historic villages, picnicked by the Dordogne and canoed along the Vezere but there is much more out there to see. I think we will be staying at Le Chause Haut for many years to come.

An excellent property done to top English standards. Fully equipped and everything is still shiny new. Your hosts are extremely pleasant and helpful making you feel more like house guests than renters. Very relaxing with everything supplied including Sky TV, games, English books etc. If you're undecided - book it before it's gone!

Well, the holiday started before we arrived, Dave and Lorraine were so very helpful with journey routes, shortcuts and food - listen to them, you won't be disappointed. The house was immaculate, comfortable and equipped with everything you need - even a teapot and a washing machine that worked properly! The salt water pool was lovely and warm (so many places say `heated` but don't feel it), the views and location very peaceful and relaxing. It's perfectly located for visiting the multitude of places of interest in the area. Our hosts were super-kind, just easy, likeable people. They were available for a chat or glass of wine, when we approached them. They were never imposing. Their knowledge of the area is great, so they have some good tips which we took on numerous occasions, never to be disappointed. Would we go back with our girls (9 and 11) - absolutely yes.
