About Alex Johnstone

I am a Brit living in South Africa for the last 6 years. I love the coast and like splitting time between Cape Town and Spain. I take great pride in my properties and have spent a lot of time designing and decorating them to a high standard

Alex Johnstone purchased this house in 2014

Why Alex Johnstone chose Maro

I have loved this area for many years, my parents have had a property here for over twenty years so I've seen it develop and improve significantly.

Maro is a traditional Andalusian village but very close to the beach and also to Nerja town which has many restaurants and bars.

There are lots of great beaches along the coast within a short drive, in addition to the local Maro beach.

I bought this house and had an architect draw up plans for a completely new and modern layout behind the traditional village facade.

What makes this house unique

The house has the benefit of being close to Nerja but situated in the quieter village of Maro just 3km away. Behind the traditional Andalus exterior is a modern relaxed space done to a very high specification. This house is unlike any other in the village.

What more could you ask for in a vacation rental?

  • 5 of 5

What matters to us is that the photos accurately reflect the actual conditions you will find when you arrive. Check that box - it does.

What matters to us is that the apartment kitchen is properly equipped to minimize the need to run out and acquire spices and other kitchen supplies. Check that box - it does (plus the owner left us a nice bottle of wine and some chocolates!).

What matters to us is that the owner is helpful with making local recommendations about things to do, places to eat, and things to avoid. Check that box also - the owner went out of his way to be helpful.

Book it, enjoy yourself, leave your anxieties behind.

Great Location, cool design, great layout.

  • 5 of 5

Great location in a small village, the property was beautifully and thoughtfully designed in a clean contemporary style with a high quality fit out. The property was exactly as described, the owners responses and attention to detail superb. The village location is brilliant, we would recommend this place only to close friends and we miss it already.

A wonderful vacation property and location

  • 5 of 5

The home is beautiful, modern and welcoming. An ample kitchen supplied with high end appliances and all you need, just supply your own food. We relaxed daily in the pool outside, and the bedrooms and baths upstairs were very comfortable.

The town is quiet, away from the bustle of Nerja, but only a short drive to it, and to other hill towns, and an hour drive to Granada. The Maro beach is a beautiful secluded beach just a short walk (steep) or drive (parking could be difficult after early morning).

Liz and Robert (Alex's parents) were very welcoming , sociable, and helpful, and available for any questions you may have about the neighborhood.

We loved, loved, loved our stay in the house and were really sad to leave.

Many thanks to our wonderful hosts for all their care and attention! Hope to be back again soon!

Beautiful townhouse in a quaint village

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 days in Maro, a welcome downtime from the rest of our busy travels through Spain. We loved the house, the decor, the comfy beds and perfect little pool and outdoor spaces. This home is located just a walk away from Maro beach. From here we made side trips to Frigiliana, Nerja and toured the Nejra Caves which are just across the street from the village. I would highly recommend this home, it was by far our best accommodation we had in our 2 week tour of the country.

SUPERB !!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

All I can say is wow!!!!

as soon as you arrive at this little town house it fills you with delight.

the prettiest little house on the most gorgeous tree lined street.

The house is simply stunning! its been done out to such a high standard! there is a little book of pictures of what the house used to look like before the work and its a complete transformation - the owners had a huge vision with this place - and they've really done it proud.

the views of the mountains and the sea from the terrace are STUNNING, I was a little worried from the pictures (before I booked) that the walled courtyard wouldn't get much sun (being an avid sunbather) but it got loads!! and in addition there is a large sun terrace outside the master bedroom which is FULL of sun all day until 5-6pm at least - almost too hot for us and at end of march?!? crazy ....

so yes the house is beautiful, as you can see from the photos, kitted out with everything you could possible need for your stay....the kitchen was better equipped than ours at home I am ashamed to say! (basically coming home after staying in this house was a little depressing)

the beds super comfy (my husband was glad of the black out blinds which really did the trick, sometimes too dark and lots of lazy mornings were the trend of the week), both bedrooms have gorgeous bathrooms, super luxurious and loads of wardrobe space which I always think is important.

outside there are ample sun beds and loungers and the little pool was perfect for cooling off.

honestly I can't praise this place enough.

I have been to Maro a few times now and this is the best place I have stayed hands down.

Maro itself is the most charming little village, its super pretty, very Spanish (so that you really get an authentic trip), the views are stunning, with the best beaches and then the most dramatic mountains must take a walk up to Maro tower which you can see from the house in the distance to the East of the village.

my husband likes to run, so he would run on a different unexplored track each day and regain me with his explorations when he returned. it was his first time in Maro and he too is in Love ....

We will definitely be returning, not only to Maro but to this gorgeous house - none other will do now.

A massive thank you to Alex , and his lovely parents who welcomed us on the first morning. First Prize for hospitality.
