About the property

The Byre, Bulmoor Farmhouse, near Lyme Regis, Devon - Dorset border. - 15 Minutes To Lyme Regis And The 'Jurassic Coast'

The Byre at Bulmoor Farmhouse is tucked away in an exceptionally tranquil part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by wooded hills, country lanes and abundant wildlife, yet only a short drive to the Dorset and East Devon UNESCO World Heritage Coast. The popular seaside town of Lyme Regis, the charming fishing village of Beer and picturesque Branscombe are all within 15 minutes. The River Cottage Canteen, of worldwide TV fame, is 10 minutes away while their Park Farm HQ is a close neighbour. A 30-minute drive will take you to the elegant Regency resort of Sidmouth.

The Byre is in the grounds of Bulmoor Farmhouse, which dates from 1797 and is listed by English Heritage as a building of “Special Architectural and Historical Importance”. The present owners, using traditional skills and materials, have painstakingly restored both buildings, and the ancient cider apple orchard.

In the Byre, the generous dimensions of the former milking parlour, cowshed, large stable doors, hopper windows and high vaulted ceilings have all been retained, creating the quirky spaciousness that is the dominant feature of the accommodation. Its attractions are year round, but at their very best in April to May when the woods and hedgerows are awash with wild flowers and the orchards are in full bloom - The perfect hideaway for a coast and country holiday, 4-star rated by Visit England.

About Monica Ashton

It was as an au pair over here from Sweden that Monica first dreamed of living in this exceptionally attractive part of England. After many years living around the world through Tony’s jobs in environmental protection, we returned to find the derelict Bulmoor Farmhouse hidden away in this verdant tranquil coombe where the Blackdown Hills meet sea.

Our next decade, or more, was one of concrete removal, oak beam repairs, cob mixing, lime slaking, re-opening of inglenook fireplaces, hair plastering, paint stripping, beeswax polishing, stonewall rebuilding, hedge laying and orchard restoration, while also commuting weekly to work in the south-east.

The Byre was the final stage of this painstaking project; completed in 2010.

Why Monica Ashton chose Axminster

We are now privileged to live in this place, peacefully remote, but with good communications to all other parts of the country and continent. On our doorstep is the Dorset-Devon border area, with its rare combination of beautiful countryside and magnificent coastal scenery, and free from the mass commercialisation of so many other tourist destinations.

What makes this barn unique

The Byre has given us the enjoyment of meeting a wide range of people and sharing the place and its surroundings, with others.

Our approach to the letting is relaxed and informal. This is why we are with ‘Owners Direct’, rather than an impersonal on-line booking agent with their add-on fees, deposits, cancellation penalties and other complications.

We understand that holidays are usually the long-awaited highlight of the year for our guests. Because self-catering is our own preferred type of holiday, we appreciate the importance of utmost cleanliness throughout the accommodation and a warm welcome after what is often a long journey. We also keep up-to-date on the nearby attractions: places to eat-out, festivals and other events, to provide a handy source of advice if required.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A part of England which is not very known in Germany. But what a beautiful one. Perfect weather in September. Thank you Monica and Tony for your hospitality!
