About the property

Cottage in Montgomery, Nr. Welshpool, Powys, Wales - In The Shadow Of The 850 Year-old Montgomery Castle With Commanding Views Out towards Offa's Dyke

This delightful 250 year-old Grade II Listed cottage is situated within a short walk of the centre of the picturesque old border town of Montgomery, just down the hill from Montgomery Castle. The views all round are fabulous, making the lovely hill walks and other outdoor activities all the more enjoyable. Nearby outdoor activities include hiking, horse riding, cycling, fishing, golf, sailing, boating, canoeing, and landscape and wildlife photography. Montgomery has an 850 year-old castle with grounds, a range of small antiques and crafts shops, a gallery, cafés, The Dragon Hotel (serving excellent meals and a wide range of drinks, including the locally brewed beer), pubs, restaurants, and a small Spar Supermarket (handy for those little extras). The town lies within a conservation area within the boundary of ancient town defences - the walls and ditch. Often seen around the town, in full ceremonial dress, are both the Mayor and lady Town Crier. They attend all the Town's events and functions and bring another aspect of old world charm to Montgomery town.

Located just 9 miles from Newtown and 8 miles from Welshpool, Montgomery is within easy reach of the larger supermarkets (Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl) as well as a range of large and small-scale retailers. Slightly further afield, Shrewsbury is 20 miles away. With its well-preserved traditional architecture and nestling within a curve of the river Severn, Shrewsbury is a real delight for anyone who enjoys discovering the small shops down a narrow side street, and the ample choice of cafés serving delicious snacks and meals.

Montgomery is an ideal base for a peaceful Holiday. For the more adventurous, Aberystwyth seaside and university town is just 80 minutes’ drive away and Snowdonia National Park can be reached within 60 Minutes. Explore wonderful towns such as Dolgellau, Beddgelert, Machynlleth and attractions such as the Snowdon mountain railway and the Centre for Alternative Technologies. The enchanting 5-mile-long Lake Vyrnwy is just a 30 miles away. Its impressive Gothic stone dam was first in the world, constructed in the 1880's: 357 metres long, 44 metres high, 25 arches and corner turret towers. Lake Vyrnwy features a range of water sports, a wood sculpture park, country hiking trails, cycle hire and several cafés and pubs. Nearby is one of the UK's highest freefall waterfalls (Pistyll Rhaeadr). At 240 feet (80 Metres ), it falls further than Niagara Falls.

This traditional, semi-detached, wood beamed cottage oozes character. Accommodation includes two oak-floored double bedrooms, an oak staircase and landing, a modernised bath/shower room, a kitchen, dining room and a lounge room featuring a wood stove and exposed original beams. It is equipped with fridge/freezer, TV with Sky, Free Wi-Fi in local Hotel and Cafes (200 metres), heating, and storage for bikes and hiking gear. Outdoors, is an enclosed front garden with table and chairs and garden furniture. To the rear is a larger garden with washing line, picnic bench, and BBQ area (portable BBQ provided). Adjacent on-street parking.

Dog bath is available at a small additional cost to cover cleaning. Electricity for heating included in the price. Bed linen provided. Travel cot available when booked. No smoking inside please. Clean pets welcome downstairs.

About David Wilson

My wife Anthea and I fell in love, many years ago, with Montgomery Town, its 13th Century Castle, Monument hill, towns folk, River Severn, history and surrounding countryside. We found a fairly run down, late 1930's, 3 bed cottage in Montgomery and renovated it, finally settling here in 2014.

Our 18th Century Holiday Let 'Bank Cottage' is just a few streets away from where we reside, allowing us to personally service the property and maintain it in a lovely condition for our guests.

We are on hand most times should you need information on local services, attractions, events, facilities, country walks, etc. We keep a wide range of brochures and information covering all activities that you may wish to discuss and undertake.

Dave Wilson.

Why David Wilson chose Powys and Brecon Beacons

Montgomery is a quiet, beautiful and well preserved town that feels and acts like a village. It's small enough to remain protected in the designated Conservation area, yet large enough to have a great variety of events and attractions for all interests. It has a range of small shops, pubs and local facilities with a village feel and pace of life; yet is only 9 or 10 miles from the larger facilities offered by neighbouring Welshpool and Newtown centres.

A 30 minutes drive gets you across the English border to a fascinating larger Old town - Shrewsbury. Well worth a days visit in itself. Montgomery has a Town Crier, our lovely 5 foot 3 'Sue Blower'. Shrewsbury has a Skyscraper of a man Town Crier.. Martin Wood - The worlds Tallest Town Crier at 7 feet 2 inches !

Bank Cottage - Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

To say the owners David and Anthea we fantastic hosts is an understatement, they made us so very welcome into their beautiful home. The cottage was so quirky everything was a delight!! The beams, the fire, the door catches everything just perfect and made for a very relaxing time for my mom sister and myself. There was complimentary flowers, wine, and tea coffee and milk, just fantastic! The logs burnt beautifully on the fire, the water was constantly hot and the shower was brill!! An ideal please to stay for a total relax or if you are more adventurous there are plenty walks all around, from steep hill climbs to the monument to leisurely strolls to Montogomery or visit Powys castle. All in all a fantastic stay, thank you o much Yvonne Melanie and Jean xx

Owner's Response: Hi Yvonne, Melanie and Jean We are so glad you had a wonderful time exploring Montgomery and our lovely region on your short break. Thanks for the great, detailed review !!! Very best wishes David & Anthea

Delightful quirky cottage

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Bank Cottage and would definitely stay again if visiting the area. The nearby on street parking worked well and it was lovely to have a good supply of firewood and kindling. There is a charming little garden to the rear which we were not really able use as it was too chilly. It would be excellent on warmer days. David very kindly visited on the first evening and offered several helpful suggestions as to places/things to visit in the area.

Enjoyed a very pleasant stay .

A small and charmingly eccentric very old cottage. Not large but large enough. Not intimidating Only small niggle. Shower should have grab handle to enable the elderly (me) to get out and in safely, and another to get off the loo.

Cosy little cottage in charming border town

  • 5 of 5

The property was charming and exactly as described: it is a tiny, but perfect little hideaway, described by our children as a hobbit house. It's all cosy log burner, creaky stairs and old beams, but fully equipped with all modern requirements.

The owners, David and Anthea, provided very helpful information before we arrived and have created an excellent website/collated information on how to make the most of your stay. This includes a history of the town and surrounding area, well-documented suggestions for walks and things to explore. We met David as we were leaving and spent a good hour having a lovely chat about Montgomery and his beautiful photographs that adorn the property.

Montgomery itself is a beautiful historic border town, perfect for exploring castles and doing long walks through the beautiful countryside. It has a late opening little Spar store, an amazing hardware shop (worth exploring!) and a child-friendly restaurant with excellent food at the Dragon Hotel.

Do walk up to the castle for magnificent views over the valley.

We would definitely go back!

Lovely old cottage

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully presented cottage, with low beams - beware if you are tall - especially in the bathroom (the bruises are healing well...). The cottage is well-equipped, with everything you need for a comfortable stay. It was lovely and clean, with refreshments provided by the owners for weary travellers.

The cottage is located within easy walking distance of the town centre, which has a Spar, fish & chip shop, a grand inn (the Dragon) which serves very good food, a fine-dining restaurant (Chequers - not sampled) and a couple of cafes.

Parking is close to the cottage on the road, and there are small gardens front and rear. The road is quiet with little traffic.

The owner is exceedingly friendly and helpful, and went out of his way to resolve a problem with the Wi-Fi in the cottage (external service-provider problem, not his equipment), and gave a discount (unprompted) for the absence of the service for most of our stay.

Overall, Montgomery is a beautiful place to stay, this cottage was superb, and the owner a model holiday landlord. I would certainly stay again, and recommend it to anyone who values a slower pace of life.

Owner's Response: Hi Michael Many thanks for such a wonderful, detailed review :) It was great having you and your wife stay with us here in Montgomery and knowing that you had a relaxing time during your visit. We are very lucky to have guests like yourselves staying in Bank Cottage who appreciate just how lovely Montgomery and the surrounding environments are. We live in a peaceful little town with all it's advantages yet are only 8 or so miles from larger towns, Welshpool and Newtown, for modern convenience of shopping, restaurants, supermarkets and DIY stores. you obviously also discovered that Montgomery is also located centrally so that longer ventures are a pleasant drive away... both further into Wales and also a short hop across into the Shropshire hills, Long Mynd etc. It's great to know that you traveled across wales from Anglesea ( on the west wales coast, to Montgomery, just a mile or so inside wales from the English border ) to explore what our region offers... and also that you chose our Bank Cottage in which to spend your short vacation. It would be lovely to welcome you back whenever you wish to explore more of our region. Best wishes and regards David & Anthea
