About the property

Cottage in Montgomery, Nr. Welshpool, Powys, Wales - In The Shadow Of The 850 Year-old Montgomery Castle With Commanding Views Out towards Offa's Dyke

This delightful 250 year-old Grade II Listed cottage is situated within a short walk of the centre of the picturesque old border town of Montgomery, just down the hill from Montgomery Castle. The views all round are fabulous, making the lovely hill walks and other outdoor activities all the more enjoyable. Nearby outdoor activities include hiking, horse riding, cycling, fishing, golf, sailing, boating, canoeing, and landscape and wildlife photography. Montgomery has an 850 year-old castle with grounds, a range of small antiques and crafts shops, a gallery, cafés, The Dragon Hotel (serving excellent meals and a wide range of drinks, including the locally brewed beer), pubs, restaurants, and a small Spar Supermarket (handy for those little extras). The town lies within a conservation area within the boundary of ancient town defences - the walls and ditch. Often seen around the town, in full ceremonial dress, are both the Mayor and lady Town Crier. They attend all the Town's events and functions and bring another aspect of old world charm to Montgomery town.

Located just 9 miles from Newtown and 8 miles from Welshpool, Montgomery is within easy reach of the larger supermarkets (Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl) as well as a range of large and small-scale retailers. Slightly further afield, Shrewsbury is 20 miles away. With its well-preserved traditional architecture and nestling within a curve of the river Severn, Shrewsbury is a real delight for anyone who enjoys discovering the small shops down a narrow side street, and the ample choice of cafés serving delicious snacks and meals.

Montgomery is an ideal base for a peaceful Holiday. For the more adventurous, Aberystwyth seaside and university town is just 80 minutes’ drive away and Snowdonia National Park can be reached within 60 Minutes. Explore wonderful towns such as Dolgellau, Beddgelert, Machynlleth and attractions such as the Snowdon mountain railway and the Centre for Alternative Technologies. The enchanting 5-mile-long Lake Vyrnwy is just a 30 miles away. Its impressive Gothic stone dam was first in the world, constructed in the 1880's: 357 metres long, 44 metres high, 25 arches and corner turret towers. Lake Vyrnwy features a range of water sports, a wood sculpture park, country hiking trails, cycle hire and several cafés and pubs. Nearby is one of the UK's highest freefall waterfalls (Pistyll Rhaeadr). At 240 feet (80 Metres ), it falls further than Niagara Falls.

This traditional, semi-detached, wood beamed cottage oozes character. Accommodation includes two oak-floored double bedrooms, an oak staircase and landing, a modernised bath/shower room, a kitchen, dining room and a lounge room featuring a wood stove and exposed original beams. It is equipped with fridge/freezer, TV with Sky, Free Wi-Fi in local Hotel and Cafes (200 metres), heating, and storage for bikes and hiking gear. Outdoors, is an enclosed front garden with table and chairs and garden furniture. To the rear is a larger garden with washing line, picnic bench, and BBQ area (portable BBQ provided). Adjacent on-street parking.

Dog bath is available at a small additional cost to cover cleaning. Electricity for heating included in the price. Bed linen provided. Travel cot available when booked. No smoking inside please. Clean pets welcome downstairs.

About David Wilson

My wife Anthea and I fell in love, many years ago, with Montgomery Town, its 13th Century Castle, Monument hill, towns folk, River Severn, history and surrounding countryside. We found a fairly run down, late 1930's, 3 bed cottage in Montgomery and renovated it, finally settling here in 2014.

Our 18th Century Holiday Let 'Bank Cottage' is just a few streets away from where we reside, allowing us to personally service the property and maintain it in a lovely condition for our guests.

We are on hand most times should you need information on local services, attractions, events, facilities, country walks, etc. We keep a wide range of brochures and information covering all activities that you may wish to discuss and undertake.

Dave Wilson.

Why David Wilson chose Montgomery

Montgomery is a quiet, beautiful and well preserved town that feels and acts like a village. It's small enough to remain protected in the designated Conservation area, yet large enough to have a great variety of events and attractions for all interests. It has a range of small shops, pubs and local facilities with a village feel and pace of life; yet is only 9 or 10 miles from the larger facilities offered by neighbouring Welshpool and Newtown centres.

A 30 minutes drive gets you across the English border to a fascinating larger Old town - Shrewsbury. Well worth a days visit in itself. Montgomery has a Town Crier, our lovely 5 foot 3 'Sue Blower'. Shrewsbury has a Skyscraper of a man Town Crier.. Martin Wood - The worlds Tallest Town Crier at 7 feet 2 inches !

What makes this cottage unique

Olde Worlde charm - modern day comforts!

Cosy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely short break over Easter at Bank Cottage, cosy, comfortable and warm.

Montgomery is a great place and the locals are very friendly.

Met David who is very friendly and informed us of many things to see and do.

We will be booking again in July.

Owner's Response: Hi Graham It was good to chat with you during your stay, and also lovely to bump into you in the Dragon Hotel while enjoying our towns own brewed 'Monty's Brewery' beers :) We are glad you enjoyed your short break here in Montgomery and there are lots of other local places, attractions and things to do when you return again. It is a vibrant small town in July with our Street fair and other activities. We also have our town annual show and carnival procession in August - so hopefully you are spoilt for choice !! Look forward to meeting you again... Best wishes and regards David

Beautiful Bank Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We returned to Bank Cottage for another wonderful weekend. The snow was thus year made Montgomery an even more beautiful place to visit. The We lunched daily at The Grange, and first class meal and service and also ventured into Berriew for a lovely afternoon tea by the river!

Owner's Response: Thanks Yvonne for the Early Spring time review. It was lovely having you, your sister and mom stay with us again here in Montgomery. The snow does indeed make our lovely town and countryside look even better than it does usually. Also glad that you enjoyed an afternoon in nearby Berriew and got home safely too. Best wishes and regards David

Very nice and cozy

  • 4 of 5

The property, is situated in good position to get to all the local attractions, and is steeped in history.

It is on a step hill so you really do need to be fit if you stay here.

The size of the property for us 3 adults was on the edge of what is cozy, I would say probably best for 2, adults and 3 children.

Quirky but could have been cleaner

  • 3 of 5

We had mixed feelings about our stay here.

On the positive, the cottage had lots of character given its age - a log burner which we made good use of during a wet July weekend and lovely views from the front of the property. The main bedroom had a very unusual fireplace chimney which consumed a third of the potential floor space - the biggest ever seen! The town of Montgomery is very contained, and has a shop and hotel/bar/restaurant 2 mins walk away. There was also a bottle of red on arrival in the house kindly gifted by the owner too.

On the flip side, we arrived 5 mins before the suggested arrival time of 4pm - but were surprised to see the owner still cleaning the property downstairs. It was near 4.30 by the time he left - which in all the years of renting many self catering accommodation the owner has never been waiting in the property on arrival. Reading many of the other comments on here that seems to be the owner's friendly approach, but we felt it was quite uncomfortable waiting for him to leave and making polite small talk - before we could unpack and settle in properly.

Ironically, given the cleaning was still happening on our arrival, there were many elements in the property which were not cleaned to a high standard. Whilst recognising the properties age, there is still no reason why the window frames should be full of dead flies, and cobwebs on the ceiling. The kitchen didn't feel that clean; the splash back was dirty as was the fridge freezer inside and out, and the kitchen cupboard doors.

In addition, the garden bushes/hedges front and back were overgrown, and where cuttings had been taken from the bushes previously, they were just left dying in piles in the corner behind the back door.

It was difficult to feel homely at night time too in the lounge with no table lamp – only the bright main celling light.

With a little more attention, this property could have really given a wow factor.

Owner's Response: Hi Julian Upon reflection your review seems out of place against our string of 5 star reviews which would surely have also noticed if our cottage was not clean and tidy inside. Indeed we get more than our fair share of "Wows" from other guests. We do not seek to remove guest comments like yours but cannot reasonably accept your comments regarding the cleanliness of the kitchen area, fridge freezer etc. or flies around the windows. Our cleaning routines would surely have sorted these out should they occur. It occurs to me that maybe your arriving early and unloading your car through the rear kitchen door ( passing me finishing my last few tasks ), instead of using our lovely Oak front door (as other guests do ) may have unfortunately tarnished your first impressions and led you to search out negatives. As with any property I expect you will, unfortunately find them if you search them out. Also I was somewhat surprised by your comment of being uncomfortable 'making small talk' as I tried to convey some of the lovely events and things to see and do during your short stay with us. Our suggestions are usually happily accepted, as intended, to help guests to quickly plan out their short stay to maximise their enjoyment. We try to pop round on the first or 2nd day to greet our guests and chat over these items but I thought you'd like these as you arrived early. With this conversation and finishing my tasks I did overrun by 20 minutes or so and the truth is we were unusually pressed for time on your short weekend booking and simply ran out of time to clear up the last few tasks ( Garden leaves etc. ). It is unusual for either of us to still be at the cottage when guests arrive. We've noted your positive and constructive suggestion for a lamp stand in the living room and will install one shortly. It was nice meeting you both briefly and you left our cottage in a great condition. We'd certainly welcome you back and we've left you a 5 star guest review. Best wishes David & Anthea

Peaceful retreat close to the centre of town.

  • 4 of 5

Just what was required, with everything necessary for a comfortable and relaxing stay in a peaceful and uplifting part of the Marches. The property might be difficult for anyone over 6'2", because of the low ceilings, especially in the bathroom. But facilities are excellent, and having the owner easily on hand (David popped in to welcome us as he lives not far away) was good, knowing that any query we might have had would be speedily addressed. We didn't have any such query though as everything had been well planned and provided.
