Superb Historic Coach House On 6 Acre Gardens: Dream Location In Hidden Ireland

Overview

Property

Updated: 04-Dec-2016
Cottage in Whitegate, Clare, Ireland - Superb Historic Coach House and Perfect Base For A Touring Holiday Of The West Of Ireland

The historic Coach House is nestled in the stunning grounds of Meelick House. Dating from 1790, this beautifully restored building is set in 6 acres of pristine lawns, flower beds, a woodland garden and a walled orchard. Beautifully restored, with exposed stone walls and oak beams. Ideally located for a touring holiday of the West of Ireland, it is 45min drive to Shannon Airport, 45min to The Burren and less than an hour to Galway. This charming Coach House is the perfect location for a family vacation. The rustic feel of exposed stone, oak beams and antique furniture transport you back to a bygone era. Located on the pristine lawns, and magnificent gardens of Meelick House, this is truly a unique property. This part of East Clare is stunningly scenic. Quiet country roads lead to small harbours and lake inlets. A sense of history pervades the area. The landscape and wonderful light have attracted many artists to this part of Ireland. Although a peaceful and tranquil region, it makes an ideal base to visit many of the west of Ireland's most popular tourist attractions. The quiet roads and easy access to the lake are ideal for those looking for an activity based vacation. We can provide you with bicycles to cycle on the scenic country roads, or take the Meelick House fishing boat across the lake to Garrykennedy for lunch. Or a boat trip to Holy Island and it's 6th Century monastic settlement. We also have a kayak, which you can take for a leisurely paddle on the lake. It is just a short stroll to the local village of Whitegate, where you can enjoy good local food with a pint of Guinness. The local pubs usually have traditional Irish music at the weekend. There are several golf courses within easy reach, and you can borrow a set of clubs if needed. Or perhaps you would prefer to relax in the spacious living room in the Coach House and watch The Quiet Man, or Ryan's Daughter on the video projection system. As well as a large DVD library, we also have a large selection of music, and a library of books, many of Irish or historic interest.

About the Owner

East Clare is an inspirational place to live. The place virtually dictates an interest in art, photography, music and literature. The quiet roads make for idyllic cycling and walking, and the profusion of scenic harbours on Lough Derg are ideal for sailing and boating.

The gardens in Meelick are a constant source of pleasure, and the supply of herbs and vegetables is a wonderful resource.

My family and I could not have asked for a more wonderful experience. Jim was an exceptional host, extremely hospitable and accommodating. The welcome goodies were a lovely extra and enjoyed immensely by all. The coach house is charming and equipped with all that we needed. The property and the grounds beautiful. None of us wanted to leave. We appreciated Jim's warm welcome and he was beyond helpful. I would unreservedly recommend this property.......... Larinda, Wanniassa, Australia. Jan, 2015.

I cannot say enough nice words about Jim and Annie!! They were the perfect hosts and made our christmas stay at the Coach House one we will never forget. They went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. The Coach House was cosy, warm and very spacious. It was stocked with everything you could possible need, even hot water bottles. It is the perfect place to relax and do nothing or alternatively there is plenty to see and do -Limerick and Galway are a 45 minute drive away. We even stayed an extra night as we did not want to leave. I cannot recommend staying here highly enough........ Laura, Melbourne, Australia. Dec, 2014.

This is a stunning place to stay in every respect. The location and grounds are superbly kept with beautiful views with very welcoming Hosts Jim and Anne who made sure we were settled in (even leaving treats for our dog Griffon:) but also allowed us our privacy. The house is very luxurious with beautiful well thought out restoration ensuring comfort & warmth with tons of space, impeccably kept and clean, the photos don't do this place justice. We would stay here again in a heartbeat..... Mars, Cork, Ireland.. Jan, 2015.

Beyond our dreams!

  • 5 of 5

Everyone who has been to Ireland told us what a wonderful vacation they had. We are not the tourist-bus type, and my husband was game to hire a car and drive on the other side of the road. I began to research and found the Coach House. The pictures posted here simply do not do justice to the experience. When I inquired about staying, Jim responded immediately and even provided suggestions about other great places to see during our visit to the country. Of course we took his advice and planned our whole itinerary around that first communication. At the Coach House, we felt something very rare--this is so much more than a vacation stop. We felt melded in history and graced by hospitality-- the manor home on the 6 acre estate dates to the 1700's. The Coach House, which was built as part of the complex, is interesting and charming. We cannot recommend this experience enough, and we hope we can return. As we both observed, even the animals (playful dogs and comical hens) are happier in Ireland. ~Beth and Steve Maltacha (Mat-lu-shay') Florida

Lovely furnished accommodation- wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

Our hosts were very friendly and provided lovely homemade goodies from their land. We had elderflower cordial, wholemeal loaf, jam and freshly baked scones. Scrummy. The 2 dogs (very friendly) 5 chickens (at our door every day) made us feel at the heart of the countryside. Jim provided details of ideas of where to go in the area which was very helpful.

The coach house was really homely and tastefully decorated. For an old building it was also very warm. We had to turn radiators off.

We enjoyed exploring the area, but many journeys involved an hours drive ie Cliffs of Moher. We went to Limerick, Ennis and had a boat trip on Lough Derg.

Incredible house with magnificient gardens. Ideal for families that look forward to relaxing!

  • 4 of 5

Everything was ready when we arrived and Jim&Annie even surprised us with home made stuff. We did not miss anything at all in the house and felt like home since the beggining. Gardens are just incredible with happy chickens running across, views to the lake and plenty of flowers.

Annie offered toys for children to play and we could even take the lovely dogs out for walking! Jim helped us by giving intersting and nice recommendations before arriving and during our stay. We had such a wonderful holidays and felt in love with the house and Ireland. If you like running you will enjoy the area! If you come with children, there is a nice park in Mountshannon to play with a big maze in it!

Worthy repeating and very recommendable. Already miss it!

Best property we've ever rented

  • 5 of 5

In over ten years of renting properties through Owners Direct in the UK and around Europe, this is hands down the best place we've ever stayed in.

The hospitality we received from Jim and Annie was on a another level to anything we have ever experienced and helped to make our two week stay in the Coach House extra special.

The photos seriously don't do this place justice, particularly the lounge area upstairs which is beautiful. The house is totally brilliant.

The grounds of Meelick House itself are stunning so hats off to the owners for allowing those staying in the Coach House to walk around them at any time.

We looked forward to returning to the house every day during our long trips exploring the west of Ireland and it has everything you need to make your stay extra special.

We'll miss the mad dogs, Arthur and Bailie, who you can take for walks whenever they feel like it. The crazy chickens who queued up outside our kitchen door every morning and evening waiting to be fed. And of course, Jim and Annie whose hospitality and kindness simply blew us away.

We may have taken away a thousand memories from our time at the Coach House, but we most definitely left our hearts in Ireland.

Location

From the Owner

Meelick House, the Coach House , Courtyard , and the gardens have been beautifully restored by the current owners. It truly is a hidden gem, nestled in east Clare on the shores of Lough Derg. The area is peaceful and tranquil; the quiet roads are ideal for a short stroll to the lakeshore, cycling on the traffic free scenic roads, or simply relaxing in one of the garden seats in Meelick House gardens. Or perhaps, take the boat across the lake for lunch in Garrykennedy. But it is also the ideal base for a touring holiday of the west of Ireland. The Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Galway and Limerick are all within easy driving distances, and make the perfect daytrip.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

A stroll of about a mile leads you to Meelick Bay, a shallow inlet on Lough Derg with a small beach, very popular with local families. About 50 miles away, there are magnificent beaches such as Lahinch, Fanore, etc. The large Atlantic waves also make it an ideal surfing area.

Travel:

Shannon Airport is only 40 miles away, and a pleasant drive through the Clare countryside. Ireland West/Knock Airport is 90 miles, while Dublin Airport is 120 miles. Cork Port is 96mls, while Rosslare Port is 145mls away.

Although there is good public transport between the main cities and towns, a car is necessary to get around the west of Ireland.

Distances:

The local quaint village of Whitegate is less than a mile away. Mountshannon with its marina, sailing club and the ancient monastic settlement of Holy Island is 4 miles away. Portumna, with a marina, Forest Park and Castle is 14 mile trip. While The Burren, Cliffs of Moher,Doolin and Bunratty Castle are a easy day-trip, being within 50 miles. Galway, Limerick and Ennis are 50, 28 and 29 miles respectively.

Further Details:

Restaurants: The local village of Whitegate has two small grocery shops, a post office and two pubs. One of these pubs, the Half Barrel serves good local food until 8pm everyday. In nearby Mountshannon, The Snug in Mountshannon is a Wine Bar and Pizzeria , and The Hotel also serves food all day. Near Killaloe, The Pipers Inn serves excellent food in a restored pub, and in Killaloe, The Cherry Tree and Goosers offer more upmarket gourmet dining. Le Bouchon Restaurant in Portumna uses local Irish produce to create a modern European cuisine.

Shopping: While the local village will supply you with grocery essentials, larger supermarkets are located in Portumna, Scariff and Killaloe, or further afield in Ennis, Limerick or Galway. There is a Farmers Market in Mountshannon every Saturday morning,in Killaloe on Sunday, and Scariff on Fridays.

Leisure Activities: In Mountshannon you can take a boat trip to Holy Island, rent a fishing boat or paddle boat. The Sailing Club and marina area around the harbour, also offer fishing and swimming opportunities. In summer there is a lifeguard on duty.

There are several Equestrian and Pony Trekking centres in the area, and we have a small pony at Meelick House!

For those interested in walking, the area is a walkers paradise. Walking the quiet roads around the Coach House is wonderful, but if you are more interested in off-road, the East Clare Way, a way marked path through the countryside is just a mile away. (maps provided).
