About Linda Wright

We live and work in London and spend as much of our free time as we can at our home in Les Cluses.

We fell in love with the Catalan region, both the French and Spanish parts, when our children were small, and enjoy being able to escape from the bustle of London to the calm and beauty of French Catalonia.

Linda Wright purchased this villa in 2010

Why Linda Wright chose Maureillas-las-Illas

We have taken holidays in many parts of the region and knew, as soon as we saw it, that this house would suit us perfectly. Set in a rural location between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, there are beautiful beaches within easy reach and walking and cycling routes into the mountains directly from the house. The light is stunning, even in winter, so it is not surprising that many well-known artists have lived and worked nearby. The villa is away from the crowds in a small hamlet yet has easy access to local towns in France and Spain with a variety of restaurants, shops, markets and art galleries. We are only a ten minute drive from the Spanish border and enjoy the experience of both cultures. We can just as easily eat out at favourite restaurants in Spain as in France.

What makes this villa unique

The villa has a large, secluded garden so days spent relaxing on the terrace with a good book or swimming in the pool are hard to resist. Much of the year the weather is sunny enough for meals to be eaten outside with shade provided by the covered terrace.

If you feel more active there are hiking or mountain biking trails to follow and table tennis and basket ball in the nearby park – all without having to use a car. We have made the house comfortable as our second home including high speed internet so that we can relax but still keep in touch with the world.

The beautiful coastline is a great attraction and we love spending the day at the beach, just a short drive away, and then returning to the peace and tranquillity of Villa Mimosa.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fabulous holiday at Villa Mimosa – what a truly lovely area of France.

Marilyn and family, August 2014

“We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in your Villa. The kitchen was well resourced with every pot, pan and container you could possibly need and good white goods too.

The sitting room is very comfortable, we have sat on some fairly ropey furniture over the years and have gone home with aches and pains. Plus there is all the technology that travellers like to have these days - especially the fantastic television! We appreciated your efforts to sort us out, thank-you.

We stayed in the large bedroom and it was very comfortable with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. Although we brought our own universal wall sockets we noted that you had thoughtfully left one in each room, plus a fan for the hotter weather.”

Lovely Villa

  • 5 of 5

The villa was everything we could have hoped for....well equipped with more than we needed for a lovely family holiday. We made lots of use of the large pool and terrace area. Perfectly situated in a small hamlet within easy reach of French and Spanish beaches. There is also a lot to explore inland too, historic towns a plenty! Great communication and helpful information from the owners.

Lovely villa, great location, very peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We spent two very relaxed and enjoyable weeks at Villa Mimosa. The property is well equipped and comfortable. The pool is perfect for relaxing after a day out, or for a swim at any time of day.

The patio has plenty of shade throughout the day - we ate all our meals out there - and room for the sun beds so you can soak up the rays. The property is really well sheltered from the wind, with trees and hills all around. It feels very secluded and private. The motorway is nearby, but we didn't notice it - the trees and contours do a great job of absorbing any noise.

Excellent wifi coverage throughout the property and outside on the patio, with a good Internet speed (essential for our teenager). Plenty of options to connect your devices to the television for Netflix etc, and catch-up TV (a VPN may help you - search Google for ways to watch TV via your laptop while awy from your home country).

We self-catered for most of our stay, and there are good supermarkets within a short drive.

Leclerc and Intermarché in Le Boulou, Lidl and another Intermarché in Céret. The spacious new fridge / freezer had plenty of room for all our food and drinks.

There is a small, modern Spar in the centre of Maureillas which was very well stocked, as well as a couple of bakeries. It is walkable (a good 30 minutes - I did it a couple of times), but you'd probably want to drive. The village also has a couple of restaurants in the centre - we had a basic, but good quality meal at El Tap, with friendly service and a nice atmosphere.

The beaches of Argelès-sur-mer are nearby, and the coastline travelling south from there to Collioure, Banyuls and on into Spain is stunning. And don't miss Fort Bellegard above Le Perthus, with its commanding views south into Spain and north towards Perpignan.

Further afield we visited Carcassonne - very touristy, but well worth the drive. The Salvador Dalí theatre-museum in Figueres was interesting and quirky - you might want to investigate buying tickets online before visiting; we didn't and queued for well over half an hour to get in.

Villa Mimosa is a long drive from Calais. We were glad we stopped overnight both ways in Chartres (Première Classe hotel - cheap, comfortable & cheerful) and the drive though the Auvergne is memorable.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at Villa Mimosa and have no hesitation n recommending it.

Lovely holiday

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely holiday here. The area is beautiful - both the mountains and the coat. We could hear some road noise from the hosue but it wasn't overly intrusive. We particularly loved wandering around Ceret and Collouire in the evenings. St Jean pla de cort's hidden treasure is the beautiful lake where you can swim just 10 minutes from the villa. Surrounded by green lawns and rolling hills and with a fantastic restaurant this was a particularly draw for us - with lots for the kids to do too (swim, zip-wire, boat) - a green and peaceful respite from the beach. The villa had everything we needed and was very clean and comfortable. The pool was a massive highlight. Many thanks for a wonderful stay.

Excellent property, superb facilities and wonderful pool in a magical area.

  • 5 of 5

We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Villa Mimosa for two weeks. The pool was a real hit with the children and we spent many happy hours in it. The safety fence around the pool was also a good addition with three children to keep an eye on. The property's so set within a large garden which meant it was very private and we were able to play badminton and boules in the evenings as a family. We would certainly recommend this property and hope to come back in the future.

The house was spacious and well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. The area around had a lots to see and do and we a managed to get out and about including to the coast. Places we would recommend for a visit are Les Gorges de la Fou, Les Orgues at Ill-sur-le-Tet, Aaaye St Martain and Carcassonne. We had a wonderful evening in Collioure, which had a fantastic atmosphere and would recommend a visit to the beach at the dynamite factory, great for snorkelling.

A thoroughly enjoyable holiday was had by everyone and Linda & Boris were extremely helpful and efficient in answering any queries.

Thank you.

A beautiful, well equipped property.

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Mimosa; it allowed us to relax and take life at an incredibly slow and peaceful pace. The villa itself was equipped with everything we could want to relax and to enjoy the region, one of our favourite in all of France. Everything was geared towards making the most of the beautiful weather, and the television and internet services were also first rate had we needed them. There were excellent supermarkets and bakeries close by, and the proximity of lovely beaches helped to swing our original choice. Everything had been thought about and provided for a relaxing spell of home from home.

Many thanks,

Ian Lapworth.

Cool and comfortable villa with a great pool

  • 5 of 5

We spent two great weeks on holiday here. Its a spacious and airy villa, with a well equipped kitchen. The pool is deep and long enough to do some 'proper' swimming as well as for relaxing and cooling off. The area is very picturesque in the hills and mountains, but less than 30 minutes drive away from the coast. Friendly and well organised owners also made the whole thing straight forward.

Car: necessary

The nearby Cote Vermeille is a beautiful coast with long sandy beaches and rocky bays where the mountains give way to the sea.

The sandy beaches of Le Racou or Argeles with its shady promenade and beach side restaurants are just a 20 minute drive. There is plenty of free parking close to both beaches.

From Le Racou you can walk over the cliffs or drive to nearby Coullioure and on to Porte Vendres. The Costa Brava with its stunning bays is within an hour’s drive.

Nearest airports: Perpignan (30 mins), Girona in Spain (1 hour), Bezier (1 hour), Carcassonne (1 hour), Barcelona (2 hours), all served by budget airlines from a range of locations in the UK.

Eurostar /TGV to Perpignan takes 8.5 hours from St Pancras changing in Paris or Lille.

Use of a car is essential and hire cars can be booked for pick-up at airports and from Perpignan station.

From Calais 944 km (12 hours drive). A route via Rouen avoiding the Paris ring road is recommended.

The villa is in Les Cluses Basse, a hamlet without shops but only a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive to the nearest village, Maureillas, for bakery and other essentials. Local towns of Ceret or Le Boulou, with supermarkets, restaurants and markets (10 mins drive), Perpignan, Figueres (30 mins). Local park within 5 minutes walk, mountain walks from house. Nearest sandy beaches at Le Racou / Argeles (20 mins), seaside towns of Collioure, Porte Vendres (30 mins), Costa Brava (1 hour).

Further Details:

Languedoc-Roussillon enjoys good weather and sunshine for most of the year and is famous for the variety of its local wines. Local markets are a huge attraction with the Catalan Saturday market in Ceret being the most popular. Ceret, with its cobbled streets, is famous for its art gallery and the many artists, who lived and worked in the area finding the light and weather perfect for their painting. Collioure is a famous seaside town with lots of art galleries and wonderful fish restaurants. Just along the coast at Port Vendres is a fantastic fresh fish market. Beyond that is the marine reserve of Banyuls with its incredible underwater trail. Wonderful wide sandy beaches are less than 20 mins drive at a safe beach for younger children at Le Racou or further along the coast at Argeles with lots of beach side restaurants, shops, market stalls and a place to enjoy on a warm summer evening. The coastal resorts offer a range of water sports including scuba diving, windsurfing and sea kayaking. Equipment can be hired. There are also boat trips along the coast and to the marine reserves as well as green cycling routes. Spanish Catalonia with its Costa Brava beaches, the Dali museum in Figueres and Dali’s house in Cadaques are all within an hour’s drive. Eating out in Spain with its different culinary styles is a must and excellent restaurants in the hills above La Jonquera can easily be reached from Villa Mimosa – perfect for a long, relaxing lunch or a meal at the end of the day. The hills behind Villa Mimosa are laced with walking and mountain bike trails up into the high mountains with stunning views over the plain to Corbières to the north and Spain to the south. The yellow mountain train from Perpignan, affords stunning views of the mountains and access to thermal spas and ski resorts. The area has many historical sites, including the magnificent royal palace in Perpignan. The castles of the Cathars and the medieval city of Carcassonne are within an easy day’s drive
