About the Owner

We bought Bernis in December 2011 and moved in for the start of the school year in September 2012. Our boys attend school locally and Gavin commutes to London for work. During the summer holiday months we rent out Bernis to other families keen to discover the sunny South of France.

Wonderful House and Gardens in the Bucolic Countryside

  • 5 of 5

The owner's father set the tone of our stay at Bernis with his warm welcome, a tour of the extensive property and the next day delivery of his homemade plum jam. Bernis is a beautifully restored hilltop home with high ceilings, large rooms, is full of light and tastefully decorated. It is equipped with everything and even my amateur chef husband wanted for little in the kitchen. We spent a week there with our active teenage daughters and they loved it. Swimming in the huge natural pool (the photos don't do it justice), picking fruit from their trees and vegetables from their extensive vegetable garden, and eating dinner overlooking the countryside. Lovely. We visited the markets in the local towns and ate at some great restaurants....duck & fois gras are specialties of the region. We visited the jazz festival in Marciac and towards the end of our stay we went on a great hike through a local gorge. In retrospect we would have done more hiking. We want to go again but this time spend 2 weeks.

Wonderful relaxing retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was a mixture of an indulgence of timeless experiences - local cuisene, great wine, quaint towns, a visit to snow covered Pyrenees, balanced with a Space Centre and an Airbus factory outing. Need I say more!!

Peaceful & relaxing and yet loads to do.

  • 5 of 5

I have recently had a fabulous holiday at Bernis. The autumn colours and scenery were breathtaking. From strenous country walks to lazy strolls down to the abundant vegetable garden, to visits to the well stocked and interesting local markets to a picnic at one of the Lakes in the Pyrenees - I could write an entire blog on my visit - suffice it to say Bernis has it all and Bernis is the Best. I will definitely be returning (if the owners will have me, that is. We did partake in rather an extended and generous wine tasting evening with Christiaan - the local wine master who hosts wine and food pairing evenings!)

Escape it all in rural France

Fantastic property in beautiful, rustic Gascony. Amazing views of the Pyrenees, great hiking and dining nearby. Check out the local farmers markets for ingredients for a home-made meal, or try any of the nearby restaurants recommended by the hosts. Perfect for a large family or a group of friends.

A wonderful, warm and welcoming place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with Gavin and his lovely family last August and had a truly relaxing stay. The building is stunning and to see it being developed in a way that captures and appreciates its former glory is extremely pleasing. The setting is stunning and we enjoyed a lovely meal outside in the summer sun while watching a breathtaking storm on the mountains in the distance. Quite the contrast!

We also ate nearby and enjoyed the local food and hospitality, which was another highlight of our stay.

Overall we loved our time at Bernis and highly recommend it. The rooms are amazing, the peacefulness is rejeuvanating and the hosts are brilliant (I highly recommend a game of Chinese checkers too ;)).

Can't wait for our next visit.

Turn time off

  • 5 of 5

What a truly wonderful stay. It was like we turned time off. A beautiful place to slow down; listen to the birds sing: let the sun warm your face. Feel the peace. We spent 5 delightful weeks in this bright and airy home with room for everyone, eating breakfast on the terrace watching the Pyrenees charge with the light at times to be so close you can see the snow on the peaks and at other times a moody mauve on the horizon. The sheep and cows call from the adjoining farms and the Erasmus rooster crows his response that he is charge at Maison Bernis.

We explored local villages, enjoyed nearby fêtes and markets and savoured some exceptional meals in local restaurants. There is a lovely beach minutes away. We wandered country lanes and hiked in the beautiful mountains only an hour away. For a change of pace we spent a day in Toulouse which is only an hours drive, but we chose the bus which toured us through a number of scenic villages on the journey. The ruins of the home of a Roman centurion not far away provided a very interesting afternoon. Carcassonne was another adventure but there was always a feeling of quiet and peace as you turned into the lane of Maison Bernis. Gavin and Nicole are so welcoming and pleasant and did everything they could to ensure our stay was just what we were looking for. Hope we can return again soon.

From the Owner

Bernis in an hour away from Toulouse and the Toulouse airport of Blagnac; yet it feels a world away from the hustle and bustle. Bernis is everything one imagines of a French summer - long summer days, beautiful vistas to the Pyrenees mountains, sunflowers, fresh air and healthy food - you can help yourself to the fruit and veg in our garden. A glass of chilled wine would complete the picture!
