Velvet Cottage

Velvet Cottage is a family owned, traditional Welsh cottage in a spectacular setting at the foot of the Horseshoe Pass in North Wales. Set in it's own grounds above a quiet lane and backed by National Trust owned Velvet Hill, it is the perfect base to enjoy the many outdoor activities available in the area.

Up to six guests are accommodated in three good sized bedrooms and share a large bathroom with a bath & shower. Downstairs can be found a well equipped kitchen and dining area with fabulous views across the valley. The lounge is equipped with a 24" digital satellite TV with DVD and Freesat. A drying room at the back of the cottage is great for drying outdoor clothes or for storing bicycles (Velvet Cottage is certified "Bike Friendly" by Visit Wales).

The cottage features a front terrace which is great for outdoor breakfasts in the early morning Summer sun and a sunbathing/barbecue terrace at the back of the cottage (sunbeds and a barbecue set are provided).

About the property

Velvet and Jasmine Cottage

Velvet Cottage is a traditional Welsh cottage while Jasmine Cottage is newly built and all en suite. Set in their own private grounds above a quiet lane, the cottages are backed by National Trust owned Velvet Hill. A total of up to thirteen guests can be accommodated between the two.

Velvet Cottage has three bedrooms and a large shared bathroom featuring a bath, separate shower, basin and toilet. The main bedroom features an enormous superking bed, period dresser and clothes storage facilities. The second bedroom has twin single beds with an optional portable single. The insulated plasterboard walls keep the bedroom warm in Winter and cool in Summer. The third bedroom is a small single room especially popular with children, although the bed is adult size.

Jasmine Cottage features three bedrooms, each with a private ensuite. A downstairs bedroom is accessible by persons of low mobility. The bed can be configured as either superking double or twin singles. The downstairs ensuite features a large walk-in shower, an eco-bath, basin and toilet. The main upstairs bedroom has a kingsize double bed, traditional gentlemen's wardrobe, dressing table and a private ensuite. The third bedroom is a small single suitable for a child or single adult. It too has it's own private ensuite with a shower, basin, toilet and heated towel rail.

The lounge in Jasmine Cottage is really special. Unusually, it is upstairs which allows it to take advantage of the spectacular views to the front and rear of the cottage. A patio door opens on to a small balcony which catches the evening Summer sun. For entertainment, a 32 inch HDTV with Freesat and Freetime (intenet TV) will keep the kids out of trouble (although they really should be outdoors!) A king size sofa bed can be set up for two extra guests to make a total of seven sleeping places.

A large open plan kitchen and dining area can be found downstairs. A farmhouse style dining table with large wooden chairs can easily sit eight guests. The kitchen is equipped with everything you'd expect in a modern holiday cottage.

Jasmine Cottage is detached and set in it's own private grounds. A large offroad parking bay at the front can accommodate three medium sized cars. A front terrace leads into a feature solid oak porch with magnificent views out across the valley. At the back of Jasmine Cottage, a private terrace is great for sunbathing or a barbecue (equipment provided).

For the active, there are a huge variety of outdoor activities available in the area, including lane, canal and hill walking (walking routes devised from the owners' experiences are provided with every booking), cycling, canoeing, fishing, golf, rock climbing and bird watching. For the family, how about horse drawn barge trips, exhilarating barge trips across Pontcysyllte aqueduct, climbing the peaks at the top of the Horseshoe Pass and Llangollen steam railway for starters? Although the cottages have that "away from it all" feel, they are surprisingly well serviced by local amenities. Just three minutes' walk away is a well-stocked farm shop selling fresh meat from the farm and everyday essentials. Across from the farm shop is a highly rated bistro serving excellent meals at reasonable prices. Five minutes walk in the opposite direction is the Abbey Grange Hotel. The Grange serves evening meals but it's most well known for it's Sunday carvery. Local farm meat and locally grown vegetables are used to create a special feast. The Abbey Grange is also home to the Llangollen Brewery and three varieties of beer are sold on the premises to either drink in house or to take home (at a substantial discount). A leisurely fifteen minute walk takes you to the Britannia Inn in one direction and the Chainbridge Hotel in the other. The Britannia Inn is rightly renowned for country-sized meals at good prices. The Chainbridge Hotel has a superb location on the River Dee. The restaurant is open to non-residents and is well worth visiting, if only for the opportunity to see a kingfisher or a dipper while you're eating.

Llangollen town centre is about a mile and a half away and there are three principle walking routes into town (details provided on booking). Once in the town centre there is a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants to choose from. Just outside the town centre can be found Plas Newydd, the home of the notorious "Ladies of Llangollen". The ladies had run away from arranged marriages in Ireland and ran away to set up home together in Llangollen. They built a spectacular residence and their unusual lifestyle soon attracted the cream of society. Lord Byron, the Duke of Wellington, William Wordsworth and Percy Shelley were among an array of famous visitors. Their house is now a museum and is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout the Summer. Further afield, the Welsh coast is just 45 minutes drive away at Prestatyn, or 70 minutes away in the opposite direction at Barmouth. Liverpool is just over an hour's drive away and is well worth a visit. Snowdonia is under an hour's drive away.

About Ian Carrington

Yvonne and Ian Carrington have been running Velvet Cottage since 2010, Jasmine Cottage was added in 2014 . We live 35 miles away from the cottages. We appreciate that what holidaymakers value above all else is privacy, and that is what you get. However, we remain easily contactable and should the need arise we can be on site within an hour.

Why Ian Carrington chose Llangollen

Yvonne was born at Velvet Cottage, as were five previous generations of her family! Abbey Terrace is close to Valle Crucis Abbey, an important monastry in the middle ages. It is believed that workers on the monastry estate lived on Abbey Terrace at that time. The earliest confirmed dwellings on Abbey Terrace date back to 1565.

Velvet Cottage was built in 1830 as two quarryman's cottages which, over the years were converted into one. Yvonne inherited the cottage in 2009 and converted it into the holiday cottage you see today.

In 2014 we built Jasmine Cottage specifically for the holiday market. Jasmine Cottage is a clever blend of traditional styles and modern amenities, which together provide a unique holiday experience.

What makes this cottage unique

In this age of stress and pressure, our cottages provide the antidote! There is nothing more relaxing than sitting out on the front terrace on a Summer morning watching the natural world go by. Once up and about, some of the best walking in the United Kingdom is available right from the doorstep. The Llantysilio Mountain range is particularly special, it is rare to see another person up there even in the height of Summer. The Eglwsyg Rocks and World's End are more popular but no less special. Limestone cliffs meet ancient slate mountains in a breathtaking clash of geology and habitats, all within thirty minutes' walk of Abbey Terrace.
