Storybook cottage

What a beautiful cottage, and in such a gorgeous location. It was absolutely perfect. I felt like we were in a fairytale. There was nothing better than get cozy in front of the fireplaces. We did not want to leave and would have been quite happy staying there for our entire honeymoon. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating. I wish we were still there!

A beautiful, peaceful place!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful location, peaceful and secluded with abundant wildlife to watch. The lodge is beautiful and well equipped with everything you could ever want. We loved the character and charm of the building, the fireplaces, the scenery...basically we loved it all! This would be the perfect place to spend a relaxing vacation reading, going for walks, sitting in front of a fire, etc. But it is also close enough to easily visit castles and distilleries and many other attractions. It was a lovely, romantic spot for our honeymoon, and we hope to be able to stay here again the next time we visit Scotland!

a fabulous cottage in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was absolutely gorgeous in a beautiful wild setting. The most well equipped cottage i have ever rented with everything you could ever need incuded.

The setting is lovely in amongst the trees and surrounded by a plethera of birds and animals. Its a lovely place to step off the world and just chill. It did have wifi for those who cant be separated from the outside world.

the cottage itself was cozy and welcoming and the owners attentive. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for a secluded and relaxing break.

lovely walks through the woods saw us come across deer, foxes, red squirrels and lots of birds. There is even a resident red squirrel who visits the feeder daily.

Cottage in the woods

  • 5 of 5

This was our sixth visit to Mar Lodge and as alwsys everything was perfect. Beautiful sunny weather for almost the whole 2 weeks - thats not always the case but we don't mind having a bbq in the snow. On arrival the Flapjacks and jam - both home made - a very welcome treat -extremely tasty. Peaceful and ideal for a complete chill after hectic work schedule. Plenty of wildlife to see right outside at the bird table - woodpeckers, jays, red squirrels , numerous small birds, bats, frogs and if you are lucky you can spot some deer. The peacocks at the big house are pretty amazing too.

Woodburner in livingroom so easy to work and kept the whole room toasty. We didn't put the fire on in the bedroom incase the dogs got too close but have had it on in the past.

Plenty of things to do and see round about - Alford motor museum is one of our favourites.

What more can I say - we will be back.

Romance. Luxury. Seclusion. Location. Activities

  • 5 of 5

Photos can only show so much. The owners have not skimped, the luxury throughout this property is evident (if allergic to feathers speak to Caroline before booking). Warm, cosy, a delight. If you just want to get away from everything stay here. If you like activities or visiting, stay here. The location is central so the Glens, the Sea, Inverness and Aberdeen are all easy to get to. Deeside, Speyside and the Caingorms are all doable. Dolphin watching, sealife, wildlife, history, walking and cycling are all easily accessible. Seems like the perfect property? For us, it was! PS, like skiing? - Lecht 1hr, Glenshee 1.5 hrs

Location

From the Owner

The Knockespoch estate was originally acquired by the Gordon family in the 16th Century, and in its heyday it extended over several thousand acres. We bought the mansion and surrounding acres some 25 years ago. Mar Lodge was originally a tiny Victorian cottage standing on what was known as Mar’s Road and was lived in by the gardener’s family in the 1890s. More recently it was let to shooting tenants from Yorkshire who then bought the cottage when the main estate was sold; when they decided they could no longer venture north, they kindly offered to sell it to us as the now owners of the estate. Mar Lodge is a gem and we could not possibly turn down the offer – so we acquired it in 2007 and set about marketing as a very special holiday cottage.
