Apartment in Gaucin, Ronda Area, Andalucia, Malaga province, Spain - Very Peaceful, South-facing Balcony, King Size bed, minutes from village centre tapas bars and shops
The view from the main house has been described as "the best view we have seen in Spain" (travel company's name on request) - the view from the Studio balcony is the same. Located on the edge of the beautiful white village of Gaucin, our guest apartment is a romantic, south-facing studio with its own balcony and private terraces that look out over the garden and pool. The infinity pool is reached by a short gravel path through the romantic Mediterranean garden (rocks, palms, bougainvillea, prickly pear etc) perched on the edge of the hillside.

The perfect peaceful break
About the Owner
Living in London where my wife and I work, we live busy urban lives with our 4 children. One of our aims is to get away more often to the stunning countryside, climate, wildlife and food of the mountains of Southern Spain.
Arriving at the villa in Gaucin lifts our hearts and fills us with energy. Opening the balcony doors in the morning is a special moment every day... lighting a log fire on a cool winter evening with a book or a film after a home cooked dinner...
We like to cook, eat good food in or out, walk in the countryside, watch the amazing bird life in this part of Spain and enjoy the friendliness of everyone in this pleasant village. And if we really want the bustle of the beach, its only 45 minutes away.

The perfect peaceful break
My wife and I had a fantastic few days in Gaucin on our mini-moon, and it was made all the more incredible by the apartment with it's spectacular views. We spent 6 days chilling by the pool and could only drag ourselves away for a day trip to Ronda which too was stunning. The restaurants in town are great; El Atico, La Fructuosa and La Granada Divino deserve a particular mention. We rented the car from Malaga airport and found the drive straight forward, just be prepared for the hills and narrow roads of the village! Beautiful walks all around Gaucin as well. Very much hope to return one day as we really fell in love with the area. Highly recommended accommodation and chill out break.
We enjoyed a fantastic, relaxing week in Gaucin. The studio had everything needed for a very comfortable stay with amazing views all the way to Africa from the balcony. The house manager was welcoming and very helpful. The highlight was all the fabulous outdoor space - terraces, pool and garden - it was the most beautiful place we have ever enjoyed our morning coffee! And sunset gin and tonics! The village is very pretty and has all the facilities needed including tapas bars - we enjoyed Cass Antonia and restaurants -the tasting menu at El Lateral was delicious. There were plenty of good walks from the village, all with views and wildflowers in bloom. It's not far to the spectacular town of Ronda and a good day trip down to the coast if you can tear yourself away from the pool terrace. The perfect place to destress and get away from it all.
From the Owner
“Gaucin is an extraordinary village. It commands a spectacular position on a hill top overlooking the Genal River valley and Morocco beyond. While it is only 35 minutes drive from the coast, the 5000 residents are locals whose families have lived here for generations. It is a world apart from the Costa in character. There are also around 500 ex pats who live in and around the village and who help create demand for the restaurants and tapas bars and specialist food shops but without detracting from the rural Spanish character of the village and countryside. Its less than an hour from Gibraltar airport and around 1 hour 40 mins from Malaga so its accessible for shorter breaks. The area is rich in wildlife and a haven for birdwatchers and hikers in the cooler months.”
Activity and Interests
The Mediterranean coast (Costa del Sol) is 40 minutes' drive (beaches at Sabinillas, Duquesa, Estepona etc), the Atlantic coast (beaches near Tarifa) about 1.5 hours drive. Sotogrande Beach Club is about 1 hour. Most beaches have beach bars. Windsurfing (boards can be hired) at Tarifa.
Malaga airport is 1 1/2 hours, and Gibraltar airport 1 hour. Some clients also fly to Jerez. We highly recommend car hire but some people do come here by public transport or taxi (cheaper to rent a car though!).
Five minutes' walk to nearest shops and restaurants. Ronda 50 mins/37k, Jimena 23k, Sotogrande 37k, San Pedro 56k, Jerez 145k, Seville 182k, Malaga 118km. Estepona (and Carrefour) 40 minutes, Duquesa slightly less.
Jerez, Tarifa, Coto Donana, Cuevas de Pileta etc all within reach for a day out as is Tangier, Morocco. Tangier by boat from Tarifa or Algeciras. There is a big shopping mall at Canada, just outside Marbella.
Although we are part of the village, we are right on the edge of it and therefore extremely private. Gaucin itself is one of the very attractive 'white villages' of the Serrania de Ronda. Other villages such as Casares, Jimena, Benaraba, Genalguacil are a short drive away, with Ronda itself slightly less than an hour away and the coast (swimming/golf) a bit closer.
Perched below the ruins of a Moorish castle, at about 650m, Gaucin has marvellous views. Being one of the larger villages, it has more facilities than most - particularly in season. There are several restaurants, traditional tapas bars, a flamenco bar, a number of small food shops and ATMs. Everything is within walking distance. The streets are winding (we'll send you a map!), the pace is pretty slow and life is still relatively traditional for the local people here.
The surrounding area is wonderful, with lots of small villages to explore, caves, bird-watching (particularly good), wild flowers in Spring, a bull run at Easter (not to everyone's taste perhaps but part of local culture), tennis, walking, riding, etc. There are wonderful walks right into the countryside right from the door.
Ronda (1 hour) is interesting historically but also has real charm in that it is the big town for the villages in the Serrania and the local people go there for everything they can't do locally. Further afield are the beaches of Estepona, the Atlantic coast, golf courses, Puerto Banus, Marbella and the historic cities of Sevilla and Granada.

“We immediately feel at home when we enter the courtyard and open the front door. Going out of the doors to the verandah is like stepping through the looking glass into another world. The view never ceases to amaze us, nor does the privacy - the villa faces down the valley and with cliffs below the garden it is completely private. Yet we can park the car by the front door, walk 3 minutes to the nearest restaurant if we don't want to cook and 1 more minute to a local grocer if we've forgotten anything. Or drop into the delicatessen in the village for some cooked food to take home... or buy fresh fish, vegetables from the market. And then sit on the balcony listening to birdsong, watching vultures soaring on thermals and eagles skimming the roof top and the changing colours of the sky”

- Notes on accommodation: The sunny, immaculate studio is completely self-contained with its own entrance. Available out of peak season from October to mid May, it is combined with the Villa as one unit from end May to end September - see S29240. It has a south-facing balcony (excellent birdwatching from here: eagles, vultures, bee-eaters, buzzards, kestrels, see list below) and private terraces, as well as shared use of the pool (unheated) with its terraces, sunbeds, sun-umbrella etc. There is TV, DVD/CD player, WiFi, books, games, etc. Own balcony with table, chairs, clothes dryer. Separate terraces with table and chairs, swing seat, BBQ etc. Heating included. There is an electric fan, hair-dryer with attachments, mosquito plug-in, bath gels etc. Anything extra you might need can probably be borrowed from us! Same sex couples welcome. There is a gardener and, in season, a pool cleaner as well as a House Manager so you are well looked after. For special offers see list. Outside: The Studio has a balcony overlooking the garden with table and chairs (watch the vultures and eagles wheeling overhead - this is an exceptionally good place for bird-watching!) and a few steps below, a private terrace with swing seat, umbrella, table and chairs and barbecue. From this terrace a few steps and a short path lead to the pool (no shallow end) from where one looks out over lovely wild countryside and the Genal valley (stunning almond blossom in Jan/Feb) and can see Gibraltar and, on clear days, North Africa. The pool may be shared with clients in the Villa and is out of use during winter months. We have no near neighbours on the garden side (only on the street side behind) so we are very private and secluded. The pool area has sunbeds, sun umbrella, shower and a shaded area with table and chairs. A special feature of the pool is a small underwater ledge on which to stand at look out at Africa - the Rif Mountains are visible on clear days. Utility Room: Iron and ironing board provided, washing machine, storage for suitcases etc. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen is provided except pool towels (can be supplied on request - please ask). Maid service on Saturdays, extra maid service can be made available. Maid can also do personal laundry. Other: Small entrance hall. Store room for luggage, iron and ironing board.
