About Lynda McClure

.We bought our little hamlet in 2006 and have spent the last 9 years gradually bringing it back to life. 2 of the 3 houses needed total rebuilds as they had been derelict for years.

Having spent many years holidaying around every part of France, always with an eye out for a place to buy, we stopped in Jonzac for lunch one day and knew that we had found our perfect area. After 9 years of very hard work, we still know we made the right chose.

Five years ago we were delighted when our daughter Emma and her family decided to join us and has since built her own house on the footprint of a ruin adjacent to ours.

Lynda McClure purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Lynda McClure chose Charente-Maritime

Looking for an area that gave us a tranquil lifestyle but still didn't deny us the culture and activities that we had grown used to in our native Cheshire, was quite a task, but we have achieved just that!

Bordeaux, only 40 mins away never disappoints as one of France's top cities and Cognac,Saintes and Angouleme with their Roman history and wealthy wine producing industry are only a short drive away.

What makes this cottage unique

our property, situated on a private road but only minutes from the bustling town of Jonzac couldn't be in a more peaceful location with plenty of space for children to play but perfect for watching birds and deer coming out of the woods. The surrounding fields are usually planted with either sunflowers or summer wheat and walking or cycling along tree shaded trails is idyllic.

Lovely relaxing holiday in beautiful rural France

  • 5 of 5

We were a family group of 6 and all thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Clean, well-equipped and spacious house, lovely new pool and stunning views of sunflower fields. As the weather was hot we particularly appreciated the interior of the house remained nice and cool. We enjoyed cycling to the local village and along the nearby Voie Verte. The owners are very friendly and welcoming but at the same time discreet. Thank you for a lovely holiday!

Dissapointing

  • 1 of 5

On first impressions everything looked nice, it wasn't until the next day things started to reveal themselves. The cottage was surface clean, it had clearly been given a quick once over before we arrived. Cobwebs were everywhere, every corner high and low, inside every wardrobe and dead bugs in the children's toy truck, not what you would expect of a clean rental property. Some mugs, glasses and kitchenware had to be washed before being used as they were dirty, we did however have lovely clean linen and towels. Outside the garden was overgrown, the decking was old and broken in one place with exposed wiring to lights which did not work. The garden had clearly been used as a building site when building the new pool and therefore was very uneven and full of weeds not to mention a few dog poops, not very child friendly, along with the gate at the front of the property which did not shut or lock...so much a secure garden for our 2 and 7 year old children. The pool area although new was nice but the decking was pretty rough causing lots of splinters in the children's feet and bits were lifting causing a trip hazard, it was however fenced which was good. The garden furniture was old and dirty, and the cushions had seen better days, sweat stains all over them. The shutters on the windows were absolutely filthy inside dead critters and peeling paint. One of the main reasons we booked this cottage was because it was within walking distance of the local village which the owner assured us it was...well technically it is but we certainly couldn't walk there with 2 small children it was a good 30 minute walk for adults mostly along the river not ideal! There was a sofa and chair missing from the lounge which was shown on the website as were the ceiling fans. On arrival one of the toilets was already broken along with the back door being very difficult to open, this was rectified. One of the big problems we had was the electricity constantly tripping out for the first 9 days we were there. Every time we turned an appliance on we were left with no power so consequently we had to pick and choose which one was the most important at that given moment and flick the trip switch back not to mention it going off over night leaving a fridge full of food with no power! Some of this could have been overlooked had our complaints not been met with hostility and a reluctance to accept blame. After a lot of money and a 14hour journey needless to say we were very disappointed

A most peaceful retreat...

  • 5 of 5

This cottage exceeded all my expectations. It was spotlessly clean and well looked after. The garden was private and the peace was extraordinary. The owners made us feel extremely welcome. Approachable and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them. We will definitely return for a longer visit and recommend the cottage without reserve.
