About the property

2 Bed Cornish Cottage With Lots Of Off Road Parking.

This well presented, traditional dog friendly Cornish Cottage is just 100 meters flat stole from Porthallow's quiet beach and local pub (both dog friendly) and a short walk to Fat Apples café. Built in the 1920’s and named after the SS Volnay it retains many period features and is an ideal base either to explore rural Lizard or stay in with your feet up with its unique living rock wall fire place. The very large and sunny organic seaward facing garden often contains seasonal livestock, top bar bee hives and cheeky chickens laying fresh eggs daily. Gentle streams boarder the garden interspersed with apple trees, wild flowers, BBQ area and separate fire pit. With plenty to explore in the local area for the whole family, life can be as busy as you make it. (At this point I recommend you read the reviews for the reasons why you should stay). Porthallow has a quiet and sheltered pebble beach with rock pools to explore and magnificent views. The beach offers small boats and kayak/canoe launching facilities ideal for fishing and cove exploration. Pothallow is the official South West coastal path half way point and Volnay View is ideally situated for families to enjoy this living heritage. Volnay View has lots of off road parking (small trailers included) with easy access. There is also ample outside drying space for beach clothing, diving/fishing equipment. Other nearby attractions POLDARK MINE, FLAMBARDS, CADGWITH, COVERACK, CAMEL Farm and GOONHILLY EARTH STATION.

If the weather is good a fishing with owners is must.

See you Dreckly!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Returning to the Lizard after decades away, was lucky to find Volnay Cottage at Porthallow to use as a base to re-explore the locality and the Lizard generally. Comfortably and well equipped, being set in tranquil surroundings was perfect, whether we wanted to sit on the beach or stroll along the many local footpaths. Enjoyed strolling to the village pub full of convivial locals. Will return to this 'little gem' without doubt.

Everything you would want from a holiday.

From the moment we arrived we knew that this cottage was something special.

With a busy 2 year old and an inquisitive dog in tow we knew we had to strike a balance between relaxation and activity. Here we were able to do both.

The property itself is full of character and very cosy. A true home from home. With a chilled space outside for catching the sun and having a cool drink that was more than safe enough for child and dog to wear each other out. Ducks, chickens and other fantastic beasts.

Beautiful village with a quiet beach complete with rock pools, fantastic pisky trails, coastal walks and a very charming pub.

Great location within easy reach of plenty of attractions.

To top it all off the most thoughtful host/guide who did everything possible to make ours a wonderful holiday that none of us will ever forget.

Beautiful spot and a great base to explore Cornwall. Owners support was superb.

  • 5 of 5

The property is set in the quiet village of Porthallow. The property is decorated to a high standard and it definitely feels like being home from home. Downstairs there is a wood burner in the living room, television and comfortable sofa. Kitchen joins the living room and is very well equipped with everything you would need. Ceramic hob, electric oven, microwave and dishwasher. There is an additional room to the side of the house with a living wall and mood lighting at night. There is also a sofa and a television and many DVDs to chose from. The room to the side of the house also has a gas fires heater and there is a small freezer. You are 5 minutes walk from the beach which is a stony cove. The pub the 5 pilchards has a great almosphere, local Ale and a very good and highly recommended menu. Either side of the cove you can join the west coast path which is great if you are a keen walker or hiker. Pete and Jo were excellent hosts and contact before and during our stay was very good. If you are looking for a place to stay to explore southern Cornwall, this is the place for you. Very Highly recommended.

Relax and Unwind

  • 5 of 5

Great location, close to cliff top walks, pub, cove (not sandy but beautiful with wonderful rocks to explore/climb and calm sea), plus more. Cottage clean and well equipped/presented. Dog room ideal and a great space for our 2 large dogs. Owner relaxed, welcoming and friendly with expert local knowledge. We had a wonderful holiday over the Easter period (04/2017) and will be booking again. We don't have anything negative to say...

Relaxing Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a really lovely break in Porthallow. The cottage was every bit as cosy and spacious as we had hoped for. It was spotlessly clean and equipped with everything that we required. Our hosts, Pete and Jo were lovely. Very friendly and on hand with advice, if needed, about the local area. Pete was great with my grandson, sorting out an egg hunt for eggs retrieved from the resident turkeys, chickens and ducks. The eggs were good too!

The village was lovely and quiet - the rocky cove was literally around the corner from the cottage. My grandson and the dogs loved exploring amongst the rock pools. There were also some lovely coastal walks around the village

The local pub, The Five Pilchards, was also very close by. The food was brilliant and the staff were great. You need to book, even at the end of October, as the pub is extremely popular. A few minutes up the road is the Fat Apple café. Serves lovely food, ideal for lunch although apparently they also do a mean breakfast!

You don't have to go too far if you want a sandy beach - there are plenty of nearby coves to visit. Coverack has a lovely beach and is a working harbour. The seal sanctuary is also close by - definitely worth a visit. Although my favourite place was Porthallow beach itself!

What we liked most of all were the local people - must be a great place to live as everyone is so friendly and welcoming.

I would definitely recommend a holiday in this pretty little village and we were very lucky to have picked such a great cottage to holiday in - thanks Pete and Jo. Hopefully Strutt, the turkey, will still be there when we come back!.

Lovely little cottage in a quiet and relaxing location

  • 5 of 5

Our first time visiting the area and just so pleased we found this cottage. A lovely little property, clean, comfortable and in a quite area. Pete and Jo are the perfect hosts. Both are so friendly and helpful, we just couldn't of asked for more.

Five minutes walk to the pebble beach and the pub, with real ale and good food - what more could you ask for?

A walk back up the road, just heading out of the village is Fat Apples café who do great breakfasts/lunch/afternoon tea. About 15 mins up hill, or a short drive if your legs aren't quite up to it.

Just 2 miles away is St Keverne, which has a local Spar store, as well as a Post Office where you can use your bank card to get cash.

Helston is about 30mins drive where there's a Sainsbury store with petrol/diesel station.

We stayed for two weeks and looking forward to visiting again.
